Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume) Miq. of the Lamiaceae family, called as kumis kucing in Indonesia, is a valuable medicinal plant for their pharmacological properties. The present study comprised of fifteen genotypes of O. aristatus was undertaken to evaluate the genotypes based on phytochemical content and pharmacological activities of leaves ethanol extract. Chemometric analysis (correlation and principal component analysis) was also used to investigate the genetic variability based on phytochemical content and pharmacological activities of O. aristatus genotypes. Results of phytochemical characterization showed that total phenolic ranged from 1.48 to 36.08 (maximum in A15) mg GAE/g DW, total flavonoid ranged from 0.10 to 3.07 (maximum in A15) mg QE/g DW, sinensetin ranged from 0.36 to 4.02 (maximum in A11) mg/g DW, and rosmarinic acid ranged 0.06 to 7.25 (maximum in A7) mg/g DW. Antioxidant activity was tested using DPPH and FRAP assay. Antioxidant results showed that DPPH ranged from 1.68 to 15.55 (maximum in A15) mu mol TE/g DW and FRAP ranged from 0.07 to 1.60 (maximum in A1 and A7) mu mol TE/g DW. The genotype A8 showed the highest cytotoxic activities against HeLa (66.25%) and MCF-7 (61.79%) cell lines. Maximum alpha -glucosidase inhibitory activity was recorded in genotype A2 with the value of 62.84%. The genotypes A1, A2, A7, A11, and A15 were identified as superior based on their phytochemicals content and pharmacological activities coupled with chemometric analysis. This finding is important for breeding studies and also the pharmaceutical perspective of O. aristatus.

Summary: Sequentially prepared sea cucumber ethanol extracts (SCEEs) and protein hydrolysates (SCPHs) of Holothuria atra (HA), H. leucospilota (HL), and Bohadschia marmorata (BM) using 60% ethanol and Neutrase. The SCEEs of HL contained phenolic acids and exhibited the strongest radical scavenging activity, while its SCPHs contained hydrophobic amino acids and showed significant antiglycation effects. Additionally, the SCEEs of HA exhibited tyrosinase inhibition, associated with sulfated saponins. This study highlights the antityrosinase and antiglycation properties of SCEEs and SCPHs.

Sony Hartono Wijaya, Ahmad Kamal Nasution, Irmanida Batubara, Pei Gao, Ming Huang, Naoaki Ono, Shigehiko Kanaya, Md. Altaf-Ul-Amin

Summary: The use of herbal medicines has increased due to their lower side effects compared to conventional medicine. Unani herbal medicines are commonly used in Southern Asia and are composed of multiple medicinal plants to treat various diseases. This study aimed to develop a predictive model of Unani therapeutic usage based on its constituent metabolites using deep learning and data-intensive science approaches. The deep neural network approach provided a better prediction model than other algorithms, and 118 important metabolites for nine therapeutic usages of Unani were identified.

Garcidepsidone B from Garcinia parvifolia: antimicrobial activities of the medicinal plants from East and North Kalimantan against dental caries and periodontal disease pathogen

Saat Egra, Harlinda Kuspradini, Irawan Wijaya Kusuma, Irmanida Batubara, Kosei Yamauchi, Tohru Mitsunaga

Summary: This study investigated the antibacterial activity of oral medicines used by indigenous peoples in East and North Kalimantan. Ten commonly used medicinal plants were selected and tested using antimicrobial assays and GTase inhibition activity. The most effective sample, Garcinia parvifolia, showed antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus sobrinus and Porphyromonas gingivalis. Garcidepsidone A and garcidepsidone B were identified as active compounds. These findings suggest that the leaf extract of Garcinia parvifolia used by indigenous peoples can inhibit oral pathogens and reduce dental caries.

Influence of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis (L) DC) milk processing on bioactive compounds and its antioxidant activity

Anita Maya Sutedja, Ayumi Ito, Emiko Yanase, Irmanida Batubara, Dedi Fardiaz, Hanifah Nuryani Lioe

Summary: This study investigated the processing of jack bean milk and the changes in phenolic compounds during the processing. The boiling of the beans led to an increase in total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC), possibly due to the release of phenolics caused by the destruction of chemical bonds. The soaking step resulted in a decrease in TFC, likely due to the migration of compounds into the soaking water. Kaempferol glucosides were identified as important components in jack bean milk, indicating their potential for the development of functional drinks.
