Impulse control disorders are recognized as one of the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Majority of studies on the treatment of BPSD related to impulsivity have rather focused on the aggression and agitation. In particular, it has not been investigated how cognitive declines are associated with impulsivity in community-dwelling elderly people. Here, we have measured the cognitive and memory functions and impulsivity of 212 elderly communitydwelling people using a psychometric test battery and analyzed the correlation between their level of impulsivity and cognitive functions by multiple regression analysis. We found an elevation of impulsivity, which was evaluated by the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11, closely related to decline of cognitive functions, which were evaluated by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment and the Mini-Mental State Examination, and Logical Memory function, which were evaluated by the Wechsler Memory Scale-Delayed Recall. Then we have divided them into groups based on the severity of cognitive decline and conducted an analysis of each group, the result of which showed that as this tendency was particularly noticeable in the suspected dementia group. Therefore, we have concluded that heightened impulsivity is negatively associated with cognitive and memory functions in communitydwelling elderly people.

Summary: The study found that anserine can protect MCI patients from cognitive decline by suppressing MPO-mediated neuroinflammatory responses. The significant difference in MMSE change scores between the active and placebo arms highlights the protective effect of anserine on cognitive function in elderly individuals with MCI.

Summary: The study found a significant correlation between cognitive function in elderly individuals and daily consumption of fat, especially in monounsaturated fatty acids and oleic acid. This suggests that the intake of these fats may have a beneficial effect on cognitive decline in community-dwelling Japanese elderly individuals.

Summary: This study used a photodynamic technique to selectively eliminate the cortico-subthalamo projection in male mice, and found that after elimination, cortically evoked early excitation in the substantia nigra pars reticulata was diminished, while the cortically evoked inhibition and late excitation delivered through the direct and indirect pathways remained unchanged. In addition, locomotor activity was significantly increased after bilateral cortico-subthalamo elimination.

Summary: This study found that ingestion of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum OLL2712 had protective effects against memory function decline in older adults. Significant improvements in composite memory and visual memory scores were observed in the active group. Additionally, the active group showed a lower abundance ratio of bacteria genera related to inflammation.

Protein-Balanced Dietary Habits Benefit Cognitive Function in Japanese Older Adults

Keisuke Sakurai, Erika Okada, Saya Anzai, Risako Tamura, Izumi Shiraishi, Noriko Inamura, Satoru Kobayashi, Mikako Sato, Takashi Matsumoto, Kazuyuki Kudo, Yukihiro Sugawara, Tatsuhiro Hisatsune

Summary: In this study, the dietary patterns of elderly Japanese individuals were classified using cluster analysis, and a high-carbohydrate (HC) dietary pattern and a protein-balanced (PB) dietary pattern were identified. Cognitive function was significantly higher in the PB group than in the HC group. A classification model was created to predict cognitive reservation in community-dwelling older adults based on these dietary patterns.
