Energy recovery from water distribution networks using micro hydropower: A case study in Iran

Summary: There is considerable untapped energy potential in water distribution networks that can be harnessed through the installation of micro-hydropower systems. This study develops a modeling framework to demonstrate the feasibility of using this unexploited energy for powering water pumps. The results show that a significant amount of power can be generated by extracting excess energy from pressure reduction valves.

A comprehensive analysis on a novel DC-Excited Flux-Switching Linear Motor as a new linear vehicle for transportation systems

Summary: This paper investigates a novel DC-Excited Flux-Switching Linear Motor (DC-FSLM) with a simple secondary as the machine stator. The phases and excitation windings are placed on the primary, resulting in a low-cost and simple structure linear motor with acceptable dynamic performance. The motor operation under dynamic load is analyzed using a parametric Magnetic Equivalent Circuit (MEC), considering the core saturation and end-effect. The paper discusses the machine capabilities and performance characteristics through simulation results and validates them using the Finite Element Method (FEM).

Summary: This study presents an effective model for planning and utilizing a district heating system and applies it to a province in Turkey. It predicts the heating load and evaluates suitable regions for establishing district heating systems using machine learning and geographic information system methods. Different scenarios are analyzed to determine the most effective heating solution in terms of economic and environmental aspects.

Economic and Environmental Analysis of Incorporating Geothermal District Heating System Combined with Radiant Floor Heating for Building Heat Supply in Sarein, Iran Using Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Summary: This paper aims to design a 100% renewable district heating system integrated with radiant floor heating for residential buildings in Sarein, Iran. A novel approach combining geothermal energy and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is proposed to achieve renewable energy. Findings show that the renewable district heating system can reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and generate economic benefits.

Techno-economic optimization of a renewable micro grid using multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm

Summary: This study applied a multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm to three renewable micro grid configurations in Shiraz, Iran. The results showed that the simultaneous utilization of wind and solar energy was more beneficial, especially when considering carbon tax policies or renewable energy incentives for future applications.

Summary: Wind energy is an attractive option in terms of economics, technology, and environment. Subsidies for fossil fuels have been the major obstacle to developing renewable resources in Iran. This study used a multi-criteria decision method to identify wind energy potential in Khuzestan province. The results show different cities have the most potential from economic and technical viewpoints.

Multi-criteria decision for selecting a wind farm location to supply energy to reverse osmosis devices and produce freshwater using GIS in Iran

Summary: Due to its arid and semi-arid climates, Iran faces high water stress and the urgent need for a solution to utilize saltwater is crucial. This study presents an indirect method to identify areas in Iran that are prone to salinity and have the potential for wind energy to power reverse osmosis desalination devices. Factors such as economics, environment, technology, and geology are considered. The proposed methodology, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), can be applied in other countries to identify suitable areas for freshwater production using reverse osmosis technology. Torbat-e-Jam in Khorasan Razavi province is found to have the highest potential for freshwater production among other areas in Iran.

Optimal site selection and sizing of solar EV charge stations

Summary: Driving conventional gasoline vehicles causes environmental degradation, so electric vehicles are emerging as an alternative due to their economical and environmentally friendly nature. However, one of the main drawbacks of electric vehicles is the recharging problem. To address this, a multi-criteria decision-making analysis approach based on GIS was used to select optimal charge station locations. The method was applied in Kish, Iran, and the results showed that the proposed model successfully identified suitable locations for charge stations that meet the demand for charging electric vehicles within a certain access distance.

This paper presents an indirect method to identify areas with brackish water sources and assess their potential for using solar energy for desalination. The proposed methodology can be applied in other countries and has potential applications for professionals and organizations.

Experimental Investigation on Solar Water Heater Integrated with Thermal Battery Using Phase Change Material and Porous Media

Summary: Evacuated tube heat pipe solar collector is an effective way to provide hot water using the sun's thermal energy. This system uses phase change materials (PCM) and porous media in a reshaped manifold to act as a thermal energy storage medium. The porous media allows for better heat distribution within the PCM. The efficiency of the thermal battery is 50% +/- 9.3% and it can provide hot water exceeding 120 liters per day at 38 degrees Celsius.

A New Decision Framework for Hybrid Solar and Wind Power Plant Site Selection Using Linear Regression Modeling Based on GIS-AHP

Summary: Currently, there is global attention towards clean and sustainable energy due to its environmental benefits. This paper introduces a novel method for selecting optimal locations for wind and solar farms, utilizing GIS and AHP methods combined with a multiple linear regression model. The reliability and global evaluation of the site scoring method used in the study ensures accurate and effective results. The proposed method showed successful results in two study areas and was validated using existing wind/solar farms from different continents, suggesting its applicability in selecting optimum sites worldwide.

Integrating heat pumps into district heating systems: A multi-criteria decision analysis framework incorporating heat density and renewable energy mapping

Summary: This study utilizes a geographic information system (GIS) to analyze different layers and identify the most suitable locations for district heating in Gaziantep, Turkey. The study employs a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach to model proposed energy systems and achieve optimal operation and planning. Results show that a hybrid energy system with a renewable energy penetration rate of 78% achieves the best levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of 0.0442.

Standardized benchmark of historical compound wind and solar energy droughts across the Continental United States

Summary: This study presents a methodology and dataset for examining compound wind and solar energy droughts, as well as the first standardized benchmark of energy droughts across the Continental United States (CONUS) for a 2020 infrastructure. The results show that compound wind and solar droughts have distinct spatial and temporal patterns across the CONUS, and the characteristics of energy droughts are regional. The study also finds that compound high load events occur more often during compound wind and solar droughts than expected.

Optimal configuration of concentrating solar power generation in power system with high share of renewable energy resources

Summary: This paper provides insights into the optimal configuration of CSP plants with different penetrations of wind power by proposing an unconstrained optimization model. The results suggest that large solar multiples and TES are preferred in order to maximize profit, especially when combined with high penetrations of wind and photovoltaic plants. Additionally, the study demonstrates the economy and feasibility of installing electric heaters (EH) in CSP plants, which show a linear correlation with the penetration of variable energy resources.

Biomethane production from biogas obtained in wastewater treatment plants: Process optimization and economic analysis

Summary: This study investigated the methanation of CO2 in biogas and compared two different methanation reactors. The results showed that the cooled reactor without CO2 separation achieved a CO2 conversion rate of 91.8%, while the adiabatic reactors achieved conversion rates of 59.6% and 67.2%, resulting in an overall conversion rate of 93.0%. Economic analysis revealed negative net present worth values, indicating the need for government monetary incentives.

Composite nanofiber membranes to enhance the performance of high solids anaerobic digestion of organic rural household waste resources

Summary: This study investigated the effect of using nanofiber membrane composites containing Prussian blue-like compound nanoparticles (PNPs) to relieve ammonia nitrogen inhibition of rural organic household waste during high-solid anaerobic digestion and increase methane production. The results showed that adding NMCs with 15% PNPs can lower the concentrations of volatile fatty acids and ammonia nitrogen, and increase methane yield.

Wind farm power density optimization according to the area size using a novel self-adaptive genetic algorithm

Summary: This study investigates the optimization of power density in wind farms and its sensitivity to the available area size. A novel genetic algorithm (PDGA) is introduced to optimize power density and turbine layout. The results show that the PDGA-driven solutions significantly reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) compared to the default layout, and exhibit a convex relationship between area and LCOE or power density.

Experimental investigation of indoor lighting/thermal environment of liquid-filled energy-saving windows

Numerical assessment of tidal potential energy in the Brazilian Equatorial Shelf

Comparison of control strategies for efficient thermal energy storage to decarbonize residential buildings in cold climates: A focus on solar and biomass sources

Summary: This research presents two novel energy production/storage/usage systems to reduce energy consumption and environmental effects in buildings. A biomass-fired model and a solar-driven system integrated with photovoltaic thermal (PVT) panels and a heat pump were designed and assessed. The results indicate that the solar-based system has an acceptable energy cost and the PVT-based system with a heat pump is environmentally superior. The biomass-fired system shows excellent efficiency.

Platform chemicals recovery from spent coffee grounds aqueous-phase pyrolysis oil

Summary: Spent coffee grounds are a valuable biogenic waste that can be used as a source of biofuels and valuable chemicals through pyrolysis and solvent extraction processes. The study found that heavy organic bio-oil derived from coffee grounds can be used as a carbon-rich biofuel, while solvent extraction can extract xantines and p-benzoquinone, which are important chemicals for various industries. The results highlight the promising potential of solvent extraction in improving the economic viability of coffee grounds pyrolysis-based biorefineries.

Evaluating energy generation of a building-integrated organic photovoltaic vertical façade: A case study of Latin America's pioneering installation

Summary: Building-integrated photovoltaics, especially organic solar technology, are important for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the building sector. This study analyzed the performance of organic panels laminated in glass in a vertical installation in Latin America. Results showed that glass lamination and vertical orientation preserved the panels' performance and led to higher energy generation in winter.

Numerical simulation of fin arrangements on the melting process of PCM in a rectangular unit
