This study compared uncertainty processing in individuals with autism and schizophrenia, revealing a possible overestimation of volatility in some participants with these conditions.
Background and objectives A plethora of studies has investigated and compared social cognition in autism and schizophrenia ever since both conditions were first described in conjunction more than a century ago. Recent computational theories have proposed similar mechanistic explanations for various symptoms beyond social cognition. They are grounded in the idea of a general misestimation of uncertainty but so far, almost no studies have directly compared both conditions regarding uncertainty processing. The current study aimed to do so with a particular focus on estimation of volatility, i.e. the probability for the environment to change. Methods A probabilistic decision-making task and a visual working (meta-)memory task were administered to a sample of 86 participants (19 with a diagnosis of high-functioning autism, 21 with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, and 46 neurotypically developing individuals). Results While persons with schizophrenia showed lower visual working memory accuracy than neurotypical individuals, no significant group differences were found for metamemory or any of the probabilistic decision-making task variables. Nevertheless, exploratory analyses suggest that there may be an overestimation of volatility in subgroups of participants with autism and schizophrenia. Correlations revealed relationships between different variables reflecting (mis)estimation of uncertainty, visual working memory accuracy and metamemory. Limitations Limitations include the comparably small sample sizes of the autism and the schizophrenia group as well as the lack of cognitive ability and clinical symptom measures. Conclusions The results of the current study provide partial support for the notion of a general uncertainty misestimation account of autism and schizophrenia.

Summary: The present study examines vulnerability factors in expecting parents that may lead to mental illness during the perinatal period. Results show that repetitive negative thinking is a significant predictor of both depressive symptoms and parenting stress. Education, social support, and parity are identified as protective factors.

Summary: In this large cross-cultural study, we found that people around the world make efforts to enhance their physical appearance. The results indicate that behaviors such as applying makeup, grooming hair, choosing clothing styles, maintaining body hygiene, and following specific diets or exercise routines for improving physical attractiveness are universal. The study also found that women, young individuals, those with a history of severe infectious diseases, and individuals who are currently dating are more likely to engage in beauty-enhancing behaviors.

Summary: According to the facial feedback hypothesis, individuals' subjective experiences of emotion are influenced by their facial expressions. However, evidence for this hypothesis has been mixed. A global multicentre study involving 3,878 participants from 19 countries found that both facial mimicry and voluntary facial action could amplify and initiate feelings of happiness. However, evidence of facial feedback effects was less conclusive when facial feedback was manipulated unobtrusively via a pen-in-mouth task.

A harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) can learn geometrical relationships between landmarks

Eric Maass, Lars Miersch, Gerit Pfuhl, Frederike D. Hanke

Summary: This study trained a harbour seal to locate its goal using landmark information. The seal demonstrated the ability to consistently follow a "middle rule" and accurately choose the midpoint of two-landmark arrays. This flexibility allows the seal to home in on places even from unknown positions.

Do parental cognitions during pregnancy predict bonding after birth in a low-risk sample?

Agnes Bohne, Dag Nordahl, Ragnhild Sorensen Hoifodt, Vibeke Moe, Inger Pauline Landsem, Catharina E. A. Wang, Gerit Pfuhl

Summary: Parental bonding is crucial for healthy parent-infant interaction and infant development. Cognitive factors, such as repetitive negative thinking and cognitive dispositions, can affect bonding. Findings show that the mother's relationship with the infant is important for her experience, while the father's well-being is a significant factor. Healthcare providers should assess parents' thoughts and emotions during pregnancy to facilitate optimal bonding.

Aberrant uncertainty processing is linked to psychotic-like experiences, autistic traits, and is reflected in pupil dilation during probabilistic learning

Isabel Kreis, Lei Zhang, Matthias Mittner, Leonard Syla, Claus Lamm, Gerit Pfuhl

Summary: Aberrant belief updating is found in autism and psychotic disorders due to misestimation of uncertainty and an increased perception of the world as volatile. Pupil dilation tracks events that warrant belief updating, reflecting the adjustment of neural gain. This study investigated the impact of subclinical autistic or psychotic symptoms on this adjustment and their relationship to learning in volatile environments.

The Effect of Situational Experiment Conditions on Hasty Decision Making in the 'Beads Task'

Kristoffer Klevjer, Gerit Pfuhl

Summary: The phenomenon of hasty decision making, known as "Jumping to Conclusions", is extensively studied in clinical and computational psychology. Previous research has mostly focused on using the "beads task" and varying situational experimental conditions. However, little attention has been given to the potential effects of demand characteristics on hasty decision making. This study explored these effects on two different variants of the beads task and found that situational conditions had an impact on hasty decision making in the abstract variant but not in the cover story variant.

Summary: Measuring individual differences in cognitive effort is challenging as it is influenced by both motivation and ability. This study investigates the relationship between Need for Cognition and working memory capacity with three cognitive effort measures, finding that two of the tasks are related to Need for Cognition but are also influenced by working memory capacity. The study highlights the complexity of measuring cognitive effort and raises questions about the validity of these tasks.

The Authorization of the First COVID-19 Vaccines Changed the Level and Nature of Intend to Get Vaccinated

David Schieferdecker, Gerit Pfuhl, Ammina Kothari

Summary: This study conducted a secondary analysis of survey data to investigate the change in public intent to get vaccinated during the emergency authorization of the first COVID-19 vaccines. The study found that the intent to get vaccinated decreased before the authorization and then increased. Additionally, age, gender, and trust in health authorities were found to have significant influence on vaccination intent. The study concludes that trust-inducing communication is crucial in the early phase of a vaccination campaign.
