Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of pre-existing atrial fibrillation (AF) on adverse outcomes after noncardiac surgery. The results showed that AF was associated with increased risk of mortality, heart failure, and stroke, but decreased risk of myocardial infarction. AF improved the discriminative ability of the revised cardiac risk index.

Summary: This study compared the total number of thrombotic and/or bleeding events between rivaroxaban monotherapy and combined rivaroxaban and antiplatelet therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation and stable coronary artery disease. The results showed that rivaroxaban monotherapy was associated with lower risks of total thrombotic and/or bleeding events than combination therapy, suggesting that tapered antithrombotic therapy with a sole anticoagulant should be considered in these patients.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the association between new-onset postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after cardiac surgery and perioperative and long-term outcomes. The results showed that POAF was associated with an increased occurrence of various cardiovascular adverse events in the short and long term. However, the causal relationship of this association remains to be established.

Summary: This study compared the effects of blood pressure-lowering drugs in patients with and without atrial fibrillation (AF) and found that lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events similarly in individuals with and without AF. Pharmacological blood pressure reduction should be recommended for the prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with AF.

Summary: COVID-19 leads to increased incidence of cardiac arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation (AF). This study aimed to determine the association between AF and COVID-19 outcomes, specifically mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). The analysis of 2,732 hospitalized patients with COVID-19 showed that AF was associated with higher risk of mortality and MACE compared to sinus rhythm. New-onset AF (NOAF) in COVID-19 patients was associated with higher mortality risk but similar MACE risk compared to existing AF.

Summary: POAF after cardiac surgery is associated with increased long-term risk of death, highlighting the need for comprehensive prevention and management strategies, including strict follow-up post-discharge. Inconsistent definitions and exclusion criteria for POAF in current studies may impact the accuracy of adjusted analyses. Further research is necessary to elucidate the underlying mechanisms linking POAF and long-term mortality.

Summary: This study proposes a likelihood ratio test for assessing the completeness of sampling in closed population size estimation studies. The test determines whether the expected number of unsampled subjects falls below a threshold specified by the user. The test statistic has a nonstandard distribution under the null hypothesis, and critical values can be easily approximated and tabulated regardless of model specification. The effectiveness of the test is demonstrated through simulation and real data examples, including a case involving ascertainment bias in Gulf War veterans with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Summary: Patients on haemodialysis have a high mortality rate due to subclinical hypoxic parenchymal stress during HD sessions. This study investigated whether changes in the oxygen extraction ratio (OER) during HD could predict mortality risk. The results showed that patients with a Delta OER >= 40% had a higher incidence of death, suggesting that Delta OER >= 40% is a significant mortality risk factor in HD patients.

Summary: This systematic umbrella review with meta-analysis evaluated the certainty of evidence on the mortality risk associated with digoxin use in patients with atrial fibrillation. The results suggest that the use of digoxin is associated with a moderate increased risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in AF patients, regardless of the presence of heart failure.

Summary: Randomized clinical trials have shown that there is a residual cardiovascular risk in patients treated with statins and other lipid-lowering drugs to target LDL-cholesterol. This risk is mainly associated with lipid components other than LDL, particularly remnant cholesterol (RC) and lipoproteins rich in triglycerides. RCs play a major role in the development of atherosclerosis, easily passing through the arterial wall and stimulating the progression of smooth muscle cells and resident macrophages. Further studies and clinical trials are needed to evaluate the effects of drugs on RC levels and the efficacy of reducing RC on cardiovascular events.

Summary: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common cause of death worldwide. The incidence varies between Western and Eastern countries, with Western countries having a higher incidence. Several risk factors have been identified, including male sex, diabetes, obesity, smoking, genetic mutations, oral contraceptives, long-haul flights, and medical conditions like cancer. This review provides a comprehensive summary of these risk factors and the potential mechanisms leading to VTE.

Summary: This multicenter retrospective study aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of 123I-FP-CIT (DAT-SPECT), 123I-MIBG (mIBG-scintigraphy), or a combination of both exams in de novo Parkinson's disease patients. The results showed that mIBG-scintigraphy has higher diagnostic accuracy in de novo Parkinson's disease patients compared to DAT-SPECT. Therefore, the combined use of both exams does not appear to be mandatory in the early phase of Parkinson's disease.
