The recent development of new technologies and data analytics has led to the rise of the smart city movement, transforming the operations of cities and their services. This article discusses the potential contribution of operations management (OM) to the smart city movement, as well as how smart city operations can expand the scope and depth of OM theory. It also presents promising research directions and examples in domains such as energy, transportation, and retail.
Recent development of new technologies and data analytics has unleashed the so-called smart city (SC) movement, which has been transforming the ways that cities (and their services) operate. This movement is in line with the operations management (OM) community's pursuit of innovative research questions, and part of our community has already started working on this exciting area of SC OM. In this article, we shall discuss (i) the potential contribution that OM can make to the SC movement, that is, how OM research may help inform discussion and decision making in the public and private sectors. In particular, the core principle of making cities smarter is in line with the OM literature. We then discuss (ii) how and why SC operations can be an interesting topic that possibly expands the scope and depth of OM theory, through drawing links to the existing and new streams of OM literature. Finally, we present (iii) a few promising research directions and examples, in domains such as energy, transportation (mobility), and retail.

When Triple-A Supply Chains Meet Digitalization: The Case of JD.com's C2M Model

Ho-Yin Mak, Zuo-Jun Max Shen

Summary: The Triple-A supply chain concept emphasizes improvement in agility, adaptability, and alignment dimensions, rather than solely focusing on cost and efficiency. The digitalization movement brings both challenges and opportunities for developing Triple-A supply chains. The article discusses the role of the consumer-to-manufacturer (C2M) model in enabling new possibilities for achieving Triple-A digital supply chains, using JD.com as a case study.

Managing two-dose COVID-19 vaccine rollouts with limited supply: Operations strategies for distributing time-sensitive resources

Ho-Yin Mak, Tinglong Dai, Christopher S. Tang

Summary: This research explores the challenges of administering two-dose COVID-19 vaccines and evaluates different rollout strategies in terms of infections, hospitalizations, and mortality. The study finds that providing the second dose reduces infections but may result in uneven vaccination patterns. Stretching the time between doses flattens the infection curve and lowers hospitalizations and mortality. Additionally, a single-dose vaccine with lower efficacy can be more effective in reducing infections and mortality compared to two-dose vaccines.

Probabilistic Forecasting of Patient Waiting Times in an Emergency Department

Siddharth Arora, James W. Taylor, Ho-Yin Mak

Summary: This study focuses on estimating the probability distribution of individual patient waiting times in an emergency department using a machine learning approach. The proposed method provides more accurate probabilistic forecasts compared to existing methods that only focus on point forecasts. This can improve overall patient satisfaction and prevent patient abandonment.
