However, the factors that determine the effectiveness of SME digitalisation in improving performance are not well understood. This research highlights that the business value of SME digitalisation depends on the orientation towards radical change and the level of organisational rigidity. SMEs with high rigidity and a conservative approach experience lower returns on their digitalisation efforts.

Summary: This paper explores the transformation and execution of IT-enabled remote work initiatives by firms during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on archival data from 100 firms in Spain, three types of strategies were identified: leader, agile, and survival. Leader companies had a competitive advantage over agile firms, which in turn had a competitive advantage over survival organizations. Firm size played a crucial role in the execution of remote work initiatives as a leader or survival. The industry significantly influenced the implementation of remote work initiatives during three pivotal periods in the telecommunications industry.
