Natural killer (NK) cells, as members of the innate immune system, and natural killer T (NKT) cells, bridging innate and adaptive immunity, play a prominent role in chronic inflammatory diseases and cancerogenesis, yet have scarcely been examined in oral diseases. Therefore, systematic research on the latest literature focusing on NK/NKT cell-mediated mechanisms in periodontal disease, including the time period 1988-2020, was carried out in MEDLINE (PubMed) using a predetermined search strategy, with a final selection of 25 studies. The results showed that NK cells tend to have rather proinflammatory influences via cytokine production, cytotoxic effects, dendritic-cell-crosstalk, and autoimmune reactions, while contrarily, NKT cell-mediated mechanisms were proinflammatory and immunoregulatory, ranging from protective effects via B-cell-regulation, specific antibody production, and the suppression of autoimmunity to destructive effects via cytokine production, dendritic-cell-crosstalk, and T-/B-cell interactions. Since NK cells seem to have a proinflammatory role in periodontitis, further research should focus on the proinflammatory and immunoregulatory properties of NKT cells in order to create, in addition to antibacterial strategies in dental inflammatory disease, novel anti-inflammatory therapeutic approaches modulating host immunity towards dental health.

Expression of Surface-associated 82 kDa proMMP-9 in Lymphatic Leukemia Blast Cells Differentially Correlates With Prognosis

Joerg Schmohl, Sabine Moebius, Thomas Guenther, Elena Pepeldjyika, Corinna L. Seidel, Wishnu Sutanto, Friedhelm Schuster, Doris Kraemer, Helmut Salih, Amely Hartmann, Johanna Tischer, Christian Ries, Helga Schmetzer

Summary: The study found that mature B-linear blasts in ALL expressed higher levels of 82kDa proMMP-9, while in CLL, the expression of 82kDa proMMP-9 was not correlated with clinical parameters. Higher levels of 82kDa proMMP-9 expression on blast cells may be associated with a more unfavorable ALL-subtype.

Influence of probiotics on the periodontium, the oral microbiota and the immune response during orthodontic treatment in adolescent and adult patients (ProMB Trial): study protocol for a prospective, double-blind, controlled, randomized clinical trial

Summary: Orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances can lead to oral problems, and probiotics may help improve clinical parameters and reduce inflammation, but their effects in orthodontics are not well understood.

The comparison of the morphology of the mid-palatal suture between edentulous individuals and dentate jaws shows morphological differences

Ines Willershausen, Franziska Krautkremer, Tobias Hilbert, Corinna Lesley Seidel, Carol-Immanuel Geppert, Shahram Ghanaati, Fabian Necker, Friedrich Paulsen, Lina Golz, Michael Scholz

Summary: The study evaluated the edentulous mid-palatal sutures compared to dentulous controls and found significant morphological differences, including decreased vascularization, sutural width, and increased sutural obliteration in edentulous individuals. There was high variability and inhomogeneity in histomorphometric parameters in the edentulous samples.

Leukemia derived dendritic cell (DCleu) mediated immune response goes along with reduced (leukemia-specific) regulatory T-cells

Elena Pepeldjiyska, Lin Li, Jincheng Gao, Corinna L. Seidel, Christian Blasi, Erdem Oezkaya, Jorg Schmohl, Doris Kraemer, Christoph Schmid, Andreas Rank, Helga Maria Schmetzer

Summary: This study focused on the influence of Kit-M treated DC/DCleu in the whole blood of leukemia patients on the generation of immunosuppressive regulatory T-cells. The results showed that Kit-M significantly increased the frequency of mature dendritic cells and leukemia-derived dendritic cells, leading to enhanced leukemia-specific immune responses and cytotoxicity against leukemia cells.

Dendritic Cell-Triggered Immune Activation Goes along with Provision of (Leukemia-Specific) Integrin Beta 7-Expressing Immune Cells and Improved Antileukemic Processes

Summary: This study analyzed whether the stimulation of immune cells by dendritic cells would lead to increased expression of Integrin beta 7 (β7) and improved antileukemic cytotoxicity. The results showed that specific treatment methods can increase the expression of β7 in immune cells and it is associated with leukemia cell lysis.

Summary: The study found significantly increased levels of oral cytokines in neonates with orofacial clefts, especially at the first consultation after birth. Furthermore, a significant positive correlation was detected between cleft severity and specific pro-inflammatory mediators.

Orofacial clefts alter early life oral microbiome maturation towards higher levels of potentially pathogenic species: A prospective observational study

Corinna L. Seidel, Karin Strobel, Matthias Weider, Marco Tschaftari, Christoph Unertl, Ines Willershausen, Manuel Weber, Andre Hoerning, Patrick Morhart, Michael Schneider, Matthias W. Beckmann, Christian Bogdan, Roman G. Gerlach, Lina Goelz

Summary: Orofacial clefts (OFC) affect the development of oral microbiota, leading to differences in alpha diversity and bacterial species compared to neonates without OFC. Neonates with OFC have lower alpha diversity and higher levels of specific bacterial species, indicating the influence of OFC phenotype and severity on oral microbiota maturation. Neonates with cleft palate only show significant differences in anaerobic species compared to those with unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate.

Thermal Programming of Commercially Available Orthodontic NiTi Archwires

Andrea Wichelhaus, Amelie Mehnert, Thomas Stocker, Uwe Baumert, Matthias Mertmann, Hisham Sabbagh, Corinna L. Seidel

Summary: The shape of superelastic Nickel-Titanium archwires can be adjusted with thermal treatments, which have an effect on their mechanical properties. Different combinations of annealing duration and temperature determine the complete shape adaptation range and the temperature at which superelastic properties are lost. Forestadent's Titanol Superelastic, Dentaurum's Tensic, Rocky Mountain Orthodontics' FLI CuNiTi27, and 3M Unitek's Nitinol Classic are the most user-friendly wires.

Robert Parhofer, Andrea Rau, Karin Strobel, Lina Goelz, Renee Stark, Lucas M. Ritschl, Klaus-Dietrich Wolff, Marco R. Kesting, Florian D. Grill, Corinna L. Seidel

Summary: By comparing the pre- and post-PSIO maxillary models of infants with unilateral non-syndromic cleft lip palate treated with PAM or NAM, it was found that NAM can effectively reduce the anterior cleft and achieve greater medial rotation, while PAM allows for more transversal and sagittal growth.
