Optimal outcome measures for assessing exercise and rehabilitation approaches in chemotherapy-induced peripheral-neurotoxicity: Systematic review and consensus expert opinion

Susanna B. Park, Stefano Tamburin, Angelo Schenone, Ian R. Kleckner, Roser Velasco, Paola Alberti, Grace Kanzawa-Lee, Maryam Lustberg, Susan G. Dorsey, Elisa Mantovani, Mehrnaz Hamedani, Andreas A. Argyriou, Guido Cavaletti, Ahmet Hoke

Summary: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neurotoxicity (CIPN) is a significant toxicity in cancer survivors, and exercise-based interventions have shown potential in reducing CIPN symptoms. However, there is a lack of quality clinical trials and appropriate outcome measures in this field. This article reviews outcome measures in CIPN exercise and physical rehabilitation studies and provides recommendations for future trials, highlighting the need for a core outcome measures set.

SARS-CoV-2 vaccination elicits unconventional IgM specific responses in naive and previously COVID-19-infected individuals

Alessandra Ruggiero, Chiara Piubelli, Lucia Calciano, Simone Accordini, Maria Teresa Valenti, Luca Dalle Carbonare, Gabriel Siracusano, Nigel Temperton, Natalia Tiberti, Silvia Stefania Longoni, Massimo Pizzato, Silvia Accordini, Tobia Fantoni, Lucia Lopalco, Alberto Beretta, Zeno Bisof, Donato Zipeto, Donato A.M.S.L.V group

Summary: A longitudinal study was conducted on healthcare workers who received the BNT162b2 vaccine to quantify anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgM levels. It was found that coordinated expression of IgG-S and IgM-S after vaccination was associated with a more efficient response in both antibody levels and virus-neutralizing activity. The unconventional responses may suggest a recruitment of cross coronaviruses immunity by vaccination, warranting further investigation.

Cerebellar involvement associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors: A systematic review

Alessandro Dinoto, Elisa Mantovani, Sergio Ferrari, Sara Mariotto, Stefano Tamburin

Summary: This study aimed to phenotype cerebellar immune-related adverse events (iRAEs). The findings revealed that cerebellar iRAEs are usually multifocal and most associated with exposure to PD-1 inhibitors. The most common associated tumors among the patients were lung cancer, melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma. Abnormalities were observed in magnetic resonance imaging and inflammatory cerebrospinal fluid findings.

Wearables, sensors, and smart devices for the detection and monitoring of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neurotoxicity: Systematic review and directions for future research

Elisa Mantovani, Florenc Demrozi, Daniel L. Hertz, Cristian Turetta, Omar Ferro, Andreas A. Argyriou, Graziano Pravadelli, Stefano Tamburin

Summary: This study systematically reviewed data on the use of wearables, sensors, and smart devices for detecting and monitoring symptoms of CIPN. The results are promising and provide preliminary evidence for the early detection and monitoring of CIPN. However, there are several issues and knowledge gaps that need to be addressed, and the authors propose a framework for future studies.

Post-Operative Infections in Head and Neck Cancer Surgery: Risk Factors for Different Infection Sites

Giancarlo Pecorari, Giuseppe Riva, Andrea Albera, Ester Cravero, Elisabetta Fassone, Andrea Canale, Roberto Albera

Summary: This retrospective observational study evaluated post-operative infections in head and neck cancer surgery, focusing on different sites of infection. The results showed that post-operative infections negatively impacted surgical outcomes. Identifying risk factors accurately can help prevent the occurrence of infections.

Treatment for cognitive and neuropsychiatric non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease: current evidence and future perspectives

Elisa Mantovani, Chiara Zucchella, Andreas A. Argyriou, Stefano Tamburin

Summary: Non-motor symptoms (NMS) in Parkinson's disease (PD) have a significant impact on patients' and caregivers' quality of life. However, the treatment options for cognitive and neuropsychiatric NMS are limited and unsatisfactory.

IncobotulinumtoxinA Injection for Treating Children with Idiopathic Toe Walking: A Retrospective Efficacy and Safety Study

Mirko Filippetti, Alessandro Picelli, Rita Di Censo, Sabrina Vantin, Pietro Nicola Randazzo, Giorgio Sandrini, Cristina Tassorelli, Roberto De Icco, Nicola Smania, Stefano Tamburin

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the use of incobotulinumtoxinA injection in children with idiopathic toe walking (ITW). The results showed that the treatment improved ankle dorsiflexion and had a longer-than-expected effect of up to 6 months in some children. No adverse effects were reported. These findings provide a basis for future randomized controlled trials and studies examining the combination of BoNT-A with other non-invasive approaches and exercise programs in ITW children.

Subjects who developed SARS-CoV-2 specific IgM after vaccination show a longer humoral immunity and a lower frequency of infection

Chiara Piubelli, Alessandra Ruggiero, Lucia Calciano, Cristina Mazzi, Concetta Castilletti, Natalia Tiberti, Sara Caldrer, Matteo Verze, Silvia Stefania Longoni, Simone Accordini, Zeno Bisof, Donato Zipeto

Summary: The development of SARS-CoV-2-specific IgM after vaccination is associated with higher levels of SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing IgG. This study aims to assess whether IgM development is also associated with longer-lasting immunity. The results show that IgM development after vaccination is associated with higher levels of IgG antibodies in the short and long term, and most individuals who developed IgM antibodies did not experience infection, suggesting a lower risk of infection.

Exploring Outcome Priorities and Real-Life Management of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neurotoxicity: A Survey of the Italian Association for the Study of Pain members

Salvatore Sardo, Giustino Varrassi, Mario Scartozzi, Maria Caterina Pace, Vittorio Schweiger, Stefano Tamburin, Mario Musu, Gabriele Finco

Summary: This study suggests that implementing a DOOR framework for CIPN using healthcare professionals is more difficult than expected, given the significant disagreement in ranking outcomes among respondents. The survey also revealed that many prescribed drugs for CIPN have not been clinically proven to be effective.
