Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is revolutionizing prenatal diagnosis worldwide by providing high sensitivity and specificity in screening for common aneuploidies. The introduction of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology has further enhanced the performance of NIPT, allowing for high sensitivity in aneuploidy screening and the investigation of the fetal genome from maternal plasma.
Non invasive prenatal Testing (NIPT) is changing the practice of prenatal diagnosis worldwide. It provides high sensitivity and specificity in screening for common aneuploidies. As a result, it has reduced the number of invasive procedures, thereby reducing their associated risk of pregnancy miscarriage. NIPT is based on the detection and analysis of cell free fetal DNA (cffDNA) that is obtained from a maternal peripheral blood sample. Advanced laboratory detection and purification technology has improved the performance of NIPT and allowed the introduction of new applications in recent years. The introduction of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) into clinical practice has rendered NIPT to have high sensitivity in the screening of aneuploidy. It has also allowed detecting and investigating the fetal genome from maternal plasma. Fetal Whole Exome Sequencing (WES) provides non invasive prenatal diagnosis of inherited monogenic disorders and can also offer a diagnosis of an underlying cause of fetal anomalies that have a normal karyotype. The following will review the current and potential future applications of NIPT and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the various NIPT techniques. The role of public healthcare system plays in the provision of the test, and the psychological impact of NIPT on the end-users will also be highlighted. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Diagnostic accuracy of the Patient Health Questionnaire 2 (PHQ-2) in Qatar's primary care settings

Saad Thamer Sedeeq, Mohammad Jamil Mohammad AlTamimi, Ehab Hamed, Mohamed Ahmed Syed

Summary: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the Patient Health Questionnaire 2 in Qatar's primary care population. Data was anonymously collected from Qatar's primary care electronic medical record system, and the sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, negative values, and optimal cut-off points were calculated. The study findings identified a score of 2 as the optimal cut-off point, with a sensitivity of 88.73% and specificity of 69.31%. Further research should be conducted to validate these results using alternative study designs and to consider population characteristics in Qatar and internationally.

Breast Cancer Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices amongst Women in Qatar

Ehab Hamed, Bayan Alemrayat, Mohamed Ahmed Syed, Suhad Daher-Nashif, Hadi Mohamad Abu Rasheed, Tanya Kane

Summary: This study examines the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of breast cancer awareness and screening among women in Qatar. The results show that there is a gap between women's perceived awareness and their actual recognition of breast cancer signs and symptoms. The uptake of breast self-examination and breast cancer screening is low, and many women are unaware of the starting age for screening in Qatar. The study suggests expanding awareness campaigns and interventions to reach a broader audience in the Arab community.

Haemoglobin cut-off values for the diagnosis of anaemia in preschool-age children

Ehab Hamed, Mohamed Ahmed Syed, Bayan Faleh Alemrayat, Syed Hammad Anwar Tirmizi, Ahmed Sameer Alnuaimi

Summary: This study examined Hgb cut-off levels for children at 1 and 4 years of age, finding that the cut-off levels for anaemia could be as low as 9.9 g/dL for one-year-olds and 10.6 g/dL for four-year-olds. Therefore, higher Hgb cut-off values should be set for different age groups and ethnicities to avoid overestimating the health issue.

Performance of fetal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging in predicting birthweight according to the test-to-delivery interval: A cohort study

Dominique A. Badr, Mieke M. Cannie, Caroline Kadji, Xin Kang, Andrew Carlin, Jacques C. Jani

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the influence of the test-to-delivery interval on the performance of ultrasound and MRI in predicting birthweight. The results showed that MRI performed best in predicting birthweight greater than gestational age if delivery occurred within two weeks of the examination, with a slight decrease thereafter, while ultrasound performance decreased drastically over time.

Induction of labor versus expectant management in patients with idiopathic polyhydramnios

Corina N. Schoen, Sami Backley, Lauren Orr, Amrita Roy, Tiffany Corlin, Alexander B. Knee

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate whether induction of labor is associated with a lower risk of cesarean section in patients with isolated polyhydramnios. The study found that planned induction was associated with a lower rate of cesarean delivery compared to expectant management, but the difference was not statistically significant. Additionally, no differences were observed in maternal or fetal secondary outcomes.
