Summary: The study found that family-reported social needs are associated with pediatric healthcare utilization, especially when the social needs are considered urgent, leading to higher likelihood of emergency department visits or inpatient stays. Food and transportation needs were the most common. Children with social needs were more inclined towards emergency and inpatient care, while those without social needs were more likely to have regular well-child visits.

Summary: This study examined the impact of social determinants of health on the quality of care for children with human immunodeficiency virus in Indonesia. The findings highlighted the negative effects of low socioeconomic status, lack of support, complicated health insurance procedures, limited care services, and lack of coordination, policies, and practices on the health outcomes of these children. Addressing these social determinants would benefit health professionals, particularly nurses, in creating holistic care plans for children with human immunodeficiency virus and their families, leading to improved outcomes and well-being.

Summary: This study investigates clinicians' strategies for working with social determinants of health (SDOH) data and the challenges confronting SDOH standardization. The findings reveal that clinicians use different strategies to integrate SDOH data into patient care, but these strategies have limitations for coordinating care across institutions and standardizing SDOH data in electronic health records.

Summary: This study estimates the efficiency of primary health care services in China and its determinants. The results show that there are issues with the efficiency of primary health care services in China and variations in efficiency values between regions. Over time, the productivity of primary health care services has been decreasing, mainly due to slowing technology change. Therefore, increasing financial support is needed to improve the efficiency of primary health care services.

Summary: The study developed and implemented an Advanced Care Coordination program led by social workers for dual-users, aiming to reduce fragmented care and improve outcomes. Participants in the ACC had a lower risk of 30-day ED visits and a higher probability of PCP visits at 13-30 days post-ED discharge. The ACC successfully connected Veterans to needed follow-up care and resources.

Summary: The study found that non-Hispanic Black pregnant women or patients living in lower SDoH neighborhoods had significantly less overall and individual use of outpatient portals. High-risk pregnancy patients were more likely to utilize the portals, and there were significant interactive associations between race/ethnicity, clinical risk, and SDoH.

Summary: Behavioral responses play a crucial role in the dynamics of epidemics, including the adoption of mask wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explores the factors influencing mask adoption, such as social norms, perceived risk of infection, and formal mandates. The findings highlight the complex social dynamics involved and the importance of sociocultural factors and local policies in explaining cross-country variation in mask adoption speed and breadth.

Summary: This qualitative study examined the experiences of Medicaid Managed Care Organizations (MMCOs) in addressing the social needs of Medicaid members during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that the pandemic had a significant impact on enrollees, communities, and healthcare delivery, leading to increased demand for social services and a reduction in community resources. MMCOs responded to these challenges by promptly and adaptably addressing social service gaps through strong relationships with community partners.

Summary: In the United States, pediatric well-differentiated thyroid cancer (WDTC) has an excellent overall prognosis, but specific populations such as males, non-Caucasian races, poverty, and language isolation are associated with worse survival outcomes. Male gender and poverty are linked to poorer disease-specific survival, while male gender and Black race are related to higher presenting AJCC stage. Factors such as poverty, male gender, language isolation, and race impact survival and stage at presentation in pediatric WDTC.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the diagnostic methods of postoperative delirium after hip fracture, and compare their results with expert diagnosis. The study found that the consensus panel diagnosis was more sensitive, but the difference was not significant. When assessors are well trained and delirium assessments are closely supervised throughout the study, the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) may be adequate for delirium diagnosis in a clinical trial.

Summary: This systematic review assessed outcomes in Hispanic donors and characterized Hispanic ethnicity. The study found that Hispanic donors were not at increased risk for post-donation mortality, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, non-pregnancy-related hospitalizations, or overall perioperative surgical complications compared to non-Hispanic White donors. However, they may have a higher risk for diabetes mellitus following nephrectomy.

Summary: The study included 318 US based live kidney donors who developed post-donation hypertension, with 57.6% being female, 78.9% White, and 18.6% Black, and a mean age of 46.7 years at donation. Results showed that Black donors were equally likely as White donors to be concerned about developing kidney disease, while donors with diabetes were more likely to be concerned.

Summary: This study found that the number of living donor liver transplants, including those from NDDs, has been increasing over the past decade but remains concentrated at few centers. Adult and pediatric recipients of NDD liver transplants were more frequently female and diagnosed with biliary atresia. There were no observed racial inequities in the distribution of NDD grafts at different centers for adult or pediatric patients.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of electronic communication of medication discontinuation from prescribers to pharmacies (CancelRx) on medication safety. The results showed that the implementation of CancelRx prevented the sale of discontinued prescriptions, but it may unintentionally cancel some prescriptions. Strategies to increase situational awareness of providers and pharmacy staff, such as increasing the visibility of CancelRx, clarifying the distinction between active and expired prescriptions, and transmitting the reason for discontinuation, could reduce the risk of unintentional cancellations.

Summary: Racial and ethnic disparities in access to liver transplantation waiting list exist, but there is limited knowledge about underlying system-level factors. Applying a human factors and systems engineering approach, this study recruited liver transplantation teams and identified external factors, such as structural racism, that contribute to disparities. The study proposes center-level solutions to reduce disparities and improve access to care.

Summary: This study aimed to determine if scores on one speech perception test could be reliably predicted from scores on another test. The results showed limited agreement between different tests performed in the same session, and large variances in score correlation between different speech tests. Summary: Recent studies comparing non-directed living kidney donors (NDDs) and directed donors found no significant differences in socioeconomic, physical, and mental health outcomes post-donation. NDDs experienced fewer financial burdens compared to directed donors, possibly due to demographic characteristics and limited sample sizes. Further improvements to the living kidney donation evaluation protocols and infrastructure may enhance outcomes and experiences for both donor groups.
