Summary: This study aimed to identify a specific subgroup of patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) by examining dissociative symptoms and childhood trauma (CT). The study assessed 587 patients hospitalized for AUD in a French addiction rehabilitation center and identified three clusters of patients based on AUD severity and dissociation levels. Patients in the high AUD severity and high dissociation group (HAHD) showed higher levels of dissociation, as well as more severe depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms compared to the other two clusters. The HAHD group also reported a higher prevalence of emotional and sexual abuse during childhood. The findings suggest that patients with high dissociation may constitute a distinct subgroup among those with AUD, exhibiting higher levels of childhood trauma, AUD severity, and associated psychiatric symptoms.

Summary: The study found that hypoactivation in the right inferior frontal gyrus during inhibition is specifically related to substance-related problems in individuals with SUDs. Interestingly, increased activity in the same region may serve as a resilience factor in substance use without SUDs. Future research should differentiate between processes linked to the degree of substance use and substance-related problems to better understand why some substance users develop SUDs while others do not.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of substance use and overlap between various psychoactive substances in students. The study found that cannabis, nitrous oxide, and poppers were the most frequently used substances, and regular alcohol use, binge drinking, and tobacco use were associated with psychoactive substance use.

Summary: This study investigates the association between mind wandering and problematic alcohol use. An online survey was conducted among the general population in China and Germany using the Mind Wandering Questionnaire (MWQ) and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT). The results show higher levels of mind wandering and problematic alcohol use in Germany compared to China. Self-reported mind wandering is positively correlated with AUDIT scores, with higher scores observed among males, older individuals, and those who experience more mind wandering. These findings shed light on the relationship between mind wandering and problematic alcohol use, and offer insights for future interventions.

Summary: The nerve growth factor (NGF) is a member of the neurotrophic factor family, involved in the survival, differentiation, proliferation of neurons, as well as the regulation of immune and endocrine systems. Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD) caused by heavy drinking have negative effects on brain development and cognitive functions, and can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) when consumed during pregnancy.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a clinician-rated scale to assess impaired insight in patients with alcohol use disorder and examine its reliability and validity. The Schedule for the Assessment of Insight in Alcohol Dependence (SAI-AD) showed good convergent validity and internal consistency. Three subscales were identified, measuring different components of insight.

Summary: The comorbidity of substance use disorders (SUD) and bipolar disorders (BD) has significant clinical implications. BD patients with SUD demonstrated earlier onset, higher clinical severity, and poorer treatment response. Logistic regression revealed a positive association between SUD and BD type I diagnosis and mixed features.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the rates and correlates of tobacco use in Australian youth with mental illness at their first presentation to primary mental health services. The results showed that nearly a quarter of young people with mental illness had used tobacco in the past 3 months. Age, gender, relationship status, and poorer functioning were predictors of tobacco use in adolescents, whereas living in a regional location and not studying were predictors in young adults. Having a diagnosed mental illness other than depression and/or anxiety predicted tobacco use in both age groups.

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence and determinants of vitamin D deficiency in the population, finding that factors such as age, solar irradiance, physical activity, obesity, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking, and alcohol intake were associated with lower serum calcidiol levels. The data suggest that multiple lifestyle and health factors contribute to low vitamin D levels in the population.

Summary: Italy has the highest per capita alcohol consumption in Europe. A study analyzed the consumption of medications used to treat alcohol use disorders (AUDs) in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found that in 2020, the total consumption of AUD medications in Italy was 310.3 DDD per 1 million inhabitants per day, with a higher consumption in the north compared to the south.

Summary: The study aims to investigate barriers to seeking treatment for alcohol use disorders (AUD). The most common barriers identified are stigma and shame, with individuals being reluctant to admit their problem and fear the consequences and judgment from others. Participants with higher severity of alcohol use and women with high severity of alcohol use reported more barriers to seeking treatment.

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence of alcohol use disorders (AUD) and alcohol dependence (AD) in Russia in 2019 based on clients in primary health-care facilities. Despite a decline in alcohol use since 2003, the prevalence of AUD and AD remains high in Russia, with approximately 12% and 7% respectively.

Summary: There is a significant genetic overlap between ADHD and Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD), with individuals with ADHD being more vulnerable to alcohol use and having a higher prevalence of AUD. Screening and treating ADHD in AUD treatment, as well as combining medical treatment for ADHD with pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy for AUD, are crucial for effective management. Identification of individuals at risk for AUD, especially those with ADHD and conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder, is essential for preventing negative outcomes.
