Currently, there is a crucial need for novel diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers with high specificity and sensitivity in patients with colorectal cancer. A liquid biopsy is characterized by the isolation of cancer-derived components, such as circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor DNA, microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and proteins, from peripheral blood or other body fluids and their genomic or proteomic assessment. The liquid biopsy is a minimally invasive and repeatable technique that could play a significant role in screening and diagnosis, and predict relapse and metastasis, as well as monitoring minimal residual disease and chemotherapy resistance in colorectal cancer patients. However, there are still some practical issues that need to be addressed before liquid biopsy can be widely used in clinical practice. Potential challenges may include low amounts of circulating tumor cells and circulating tumor DNA in samples, lack of pre-analytical and analytical consensus, clinical validation, and regulatory endorsement. The aim of this review was to summarize the current knowledge of the role of liquid biopsy in the management of colorectal cancer.

Minimally Invasive Myomectomy: An Overview on the Surgical Approaches and a Comparison with Mini-Laparotomy

Alejandro Marin-Buck, Erbil Karaman, Juan J. Amer-Cuenca, Juan F. Lison, Peter Torok, Onur Karaaslan, Gaetano Valenti, Gabriella Zito, Antonio Biondi, Benito Chiofalo

Summary: Uterine fibroids are common benign tumors in the female genital tract, often managed through minimally invasive surgical techniques. Myomectomy is the standard surgical treatment for preserving fertility, and various minimally invasive options can be chosen based on the characteristics of the fibroids and the surgeon's skill level. A less invasive surgical approach known as mini-laparotomy has also been proposed as an alternative to established minimally invasive options. This review aims to discuss recent advances in minimally invasive techniques for myomectomy and compare them with the mini-laparotomy approach.

Gender Differences and Quality of Life in Parkinson's Disease

Pietro Crispino, Miriam Gino, Elena Barbagelata, Tiziana Ciarambino, Cecilia Politi, Immacolata Ambrosino, Rosalia Ragusa, Marina Marranzano, Antonio Biondi, Marco Vacante

Summary: Parkinson's disease significantly impacts health-related quality of life, with gender differences observed in various aspects. Women with Parkinson's disease tend to have better outcomes in emotion processing and cognitive functions, while men fare better in the cognitive domain of health-related quality of life. Studies also note differences in the association between health-related quality of life and non-motor symptoms, with depression and fatigue particularly affecting women.

Is there proof of transferability of laparoscopic psychomotor skills from the simulator laboratory to the operating room? Results from a systematic review

Zaki Sleiman, Roger Bitar, Costas Christoforou, Peter Torok, Michele Fichera, Marco Marzio Panella, Antonio Biondi, Antonio Simone Lagana, Simone Garzon, Ghida Radwan

Summary: This systematic review examined ten studies on the translation of laparoscopic psychomotor skills acquired in dry lab training into clinical practice, showing improved performance in intervention groups with fewer errors. However, no clinical patient outcomes were addressed in these studies, and all trials were at high risk of bias. Further studies with better designs are needed for more robust evidence.

Summary: This observational study compared the outcomes of intracorporeal anastomosis (ICA) and extracorporeal anastomosis (ECA) in patients undergoing laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for right colon cancer (RCC). The study found that ICA resulted in significantly faster bowel function recovery and shorter length of hospital stay compared to ECA, with no significant differences in postoperative complications between the two groups.

Oral and Parenteral vs. Parenteral Antibiotic Prophylaxis for Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Colorectal Resection: An Intervention Review with Meta-Analysis

Giuseppe Sangiorgio, Marco Vacante, Francesco Basile, Antonio Biondi

Summary: This study aims to assess the efficacy of parenteral and oral antibiotic prophylaxis compared to parenteral-only prophylaxis for preventing surgical site infection in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer resection. The results showed that a combination of oral and intravenous antibiotics significantly reduces the incidence of surgical site infection in comparison to intravenous antibiotics alone.
