Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the most aggressive forms of cancer. Negative prognosis is mainly due to the late diagnosis in advanced stages, when the disease is already therapeutically overcome. Studies in recent years have focused on identifying biomarkers that could play a role in early diagnosis, leading to the improvement of morbidity and mortality. Currently, the only biomarker widely used in the diagnosis of PC is carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19.9), which has, however, more of a prognostic role in the follow-up of postoperative recurrence than a diagnostic role. Other biomarkers, recently identified as the methylation status of ADAMTS1 (A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 1) and BNC1 (zinc finger protein basonuclin-1) in cell-free deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), may play a role in the early detection of PC. This review focuses on the diagnosis of PC in its early stages.

Horatiu Moldovan, Robert Tiganasu, Lucian Calmac, Cristian Voica, Marian Broasca, Camelia Diaconu, Vlad Ichim, Mihai Cacoveanu, Liliana Mirea, Claudia Nica, Costin Minoiu, Irina Dobra, Daniela Gheorghia, Lucian Dorobantu, Adrian Molnar, Luminita Iliuta

Summary: The incidence of isolated iliac artery aneurysms is about 2%, while common iliac artery pseudoaneurysms are even rarer. A pseudoaneurysm is a localized hemorrhage rather than a true aneurysm, which affects the entire vascular wall. They are usually asymptomatic and can be detected accidentally. If large and symptomatic, they may cause pressure symptoms and various complications. We report two cases of common iliac artery pseudoaneurysm, one treated with endovascular repair and the other with open surgery.

Evaluation of cell adhesion and osteoconductivity in bone substitutes modified by polydopamine

Ali Mahnavi, Mina Shahriari-Khalaji, Bahareh Hosseinpour, Mostafa Ahangarian, Amir Aidun, Simona Bungau, Syed Shams ul Hassan

Summary: Different biomaterials and methods have been used in tissue engineering for repairing damaged bones. However, the weakness in cellular activity or osteoconductivity sometimes limits their optimal use. To address this issue, surface modification techniques, such as polydopamine coating, have been employed. Polydopamine not only covers the weakness of scaffolds but also enhances their osteoconductivity. The hydrophilic layer created by polydopamine allows bone cells to anchor and adhere well to the surfaces, while the catechol and amine groups make the surfaces chemically active, resulting in increased osteoconductivity.

Summary: Herbal drugs have gained significant scientific interest, particularly in the past few decades, and research based on phytoconstituents is ongoing to explore their potential medicinal benefits. Daidzein (DAI), a natural phytoestrogen isoflavone found in leguminous plants like soybean and mung bean, has shown promising pharmacological properties for the treatment of various diseases. However, its limited aqueous solubility, low permeability, and poor bioavailability pose challenges for therapeutic applications. This review provides an overview of the physicochemical characteristics, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacological applications of DAI in oxidative stress, cancer, obesity, cardiovascular, neuroprotective, diabetes, ovariectomy, anxiety, and inflammation. Additionally, it discusses the recent advancements in nanotechnology-based formulations for DAI, including polymeric nanoparticles, solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carrier, and other drug delivery systems.

Summary: Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are clonal disorders characterized by excessive production of mature myeloid cells. Classical MPNs, such as polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, and primary myelofibrosis, have a tendency to develop thrombotic complications at unusual sites. The pathogenesis of thrombotic events in MPNs is complex and involves endothelial injury, leukocyte adhesion, genetic mutations, and other factors. In this review, we discuss the epidemiology, pathogenesis, histopathology, risk factors, classification, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of Budd-Chiari syndrome in Philadelphia-negative MPNs.

Evaluation of the association of chronic inflammation and cancer: Insights and implications

Manisha Nigam, Abhay Prakash Mishra, Vishal Kumar Deb, Deen Bandhu Dimri, Vinod Tiwari, Simona Gabriela Bungau, Alexa Florina Bungau, Andrei-Flavius Radu

Summary: One of the most extensively studied processes in cancer development and treatment is inflammation. While acute inflammation is necessary for wound healing and tissue reconstruction, chronic inflammation may contribute to the onset and growth of cancer. Inflammatory molecules disrupt cell signaling processes that lead to cancer induction, invasion, and development. The tumor microenvironment is greatly influenced by inflammatory cells and their secretions, which also play a significant role in tumor growth, survivability, and potential migration. Targeting inflammation with various therapies can reduce the inflammatory response and potentially inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells.
