Tape strips detect distinct immune and barrier profiles in atopic dermatitis and psoriasis

Helen He, Robert Bissonnette, Jianni Wu, Aisleen Diaz, Etienne Saint-Cyr Proulx, Catherine Maari, Carolyn Jack, Maudeline Louis, Yeriel Estrada, James G. Krueger, Ning Zhang, Ana B. Pavel, Emma Guttman-Yassky

Summary: This study utilized RNA-seq analysis of tape strips from lesional and nonlesional skin of patients with moderate-to-severe AD and psoriasis, revealing distinct immune and barrier signatures in the two diseases. The findings suggest the potential utility of tape strips as a minimally invasive alternative to biopsies for detecting disease biomarkers. Differences in gene expression profiles between AD and psoriasis highlight the unique pathophysiological mechanisms of these two skin disorders.

Hand eczema and temporal variation of Staphylococcus aureus clonal complexes: A prospective observational study

Line B. Norreslet, Sofie M. Edslev, Maja-Lisa Clausen, Esben M. Flachs, Niels E. Ebbehoj, Paal S. Andersen, Tove Agner

Summary: This study investigated the temporal variation of S. aureus subtypes (CC types) in hand eczema (HE) patients and its relationship with S. aureus colonization in the nose and disease severity. The results showed that S. aureus colonization on the hands and in the nose was relatively stable, and persistent colonization was strongly related to increased disease severity.

Baseline neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) correlate with advanced stages in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma

Cosimo Di Raimondo, Raffaele Dante Caposiena Caro, Diana Spallone, Dionisio Silvaggio, Paolo Lombardo, Ester Del Duca, Elena Campione, Giulia Spallone, Luca Bianchi

Summary: This study found that NLR and RDW can serve as cost-effective and easily accessible markers for advanced cSCC, helping to identify patients with advanced stages of the disease that require close follow-up.

Cutaneous body image in psoriasis: The role of attachment style and alexithymia

Alfonso Troisi, Roberta Croce Nanni, Alessandro Giunta, Valeria Manfreda, Ester Del Duca, Silvia Criscuolo, Luca Bianchi, Maria Esposito

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of adult attachment style and alexithymia on cutaneous body image in patients with psoriasis, while controlling for the confounding effects of disease severity and depressive symptoms. The study found that, independent of disease severity and depressive symptoms, patients with an insecure-avoidant attachment style and higher levels of alexithymia reported greater cutaneous body dissatisfaction.

Combined CO2 and dye laser technique in the treatment of outcomes due to flap necrosis after surgery for basal cell carcinoma on the nose

Steven Paul Nistico, Luigi Bennardo, Mario Sannino, Francesca Negosanti, Federica Tamburi, Ester Del Duca, Amerigo Giudice, Giovanni Cannarozzo

Summary: Combining fractionated CO2 laser with flashlamp pulsed dye laser is an effective modality for treating skin flap necrosis after BCC removal, with 80% of patients reporting good/optimal cosmetic results and no significant side effects observed during the study.

Transcriptomic Analysis of the Major Orphan Ichthyosis Subtypes Reveals Shared Immune and Barrier Signatures

Madeline Kim, Daniela Mikhaylov, Stephanie M. Rangel, Ana B. Pavel, Helen He, Yael Renert-Yuval, Ester Del Duca, Kunal Malik, Thy Huynh, Erin Ibler, Mary Sun, Ning Zhang, Yeriel Estrada, James Krueger, Amy S. Paller, Emma Guttman-Yassky

Summary: The study provides comprehensive characterization of skin from different subtypes of ichthyosis, revealing shared inflammatory and barrier function abnormalities. These findings contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of these subtypes and inform the development of subtype-specific treatments.

Reduced Skin Microbiome Diversity in Infancy Is Associated with Increased Risk of Atopic Dermatitis in High-Risk Children

Anne -Sofie Halling, Blaine Gabriel Fritz, Trine Gerner, Maria Rasmussen Rinnov, Lene Bay, Mette Hjorslev Knudgaard, Nina Haarup Ravn, Simon Trautner, Iben Frier Ruge, Caroline Olesen, Isabel Diiaz-Pinees Cort, Lone Skov, Nikolaj Sorensen, Amalie Thorsti Moller Ronnstad, Simon F. Thomsen, Alexander Egeberg, Ivone Jakasa, Sanja Kezic, Thomas Bjarnsholt, Jacob P. Thyssen

Summary: This study examined the association between alterations in the skin microbiome and the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD) in a Danish birth cohort. While no overall association was found, the study showed that lower alpha diversity in the skin microbiome at 2 months of age was associated with an increased risk of AD, particularly in children with parents who have atopy.

Atopic Dermatitis and Ulcerative Colitis Successfully Treated with Upadacitinib

Teresa Grieco, Martina Caviglia, Giuseppina Cusano, Alvise Sernicola, Camilla Chello, Ester Del Duca, Carmen Cantisani, Alberto Taliano, Nicolo Sini, Gianluca Ianiro, Giovanni Pellacani

Summary: JAK inhibitors have shown efficacy in treating immune-related diseases such as ulcerative colitis and atopic dermatitis. This case report demonstrates the successful management of a patient with overlapping conditions of ulcerative colitis and atopic dermatitis using upadacitinib, resulting in complete and persistent clinical remission. These findings suggest that upadacitinib may be an optimal treatment strategy for individuals with coexisting Th1 and Th2-mediated conditions.

Apremilast and narrowband ultraviolet B combination therapy suppresses Th17 axis and promotes melanogenesis in vitiligo skin: a randomized, split-body, pilot study in skin types IV-VI

Hee J. Kim, Ester Del Duca, Ana B. Pavel, Giselle K. Singer, Brian J. Abittan, Margot A. Chima, Grace Kimmel, Jennifer Bares, Danielle Baum, Matthew Gagliotti, Jordan Genece, Justin Chu, Mark G. Lebwohl, Emma Guttman-Yassky

Summary: This study compared the effects of combined therapy with apremilast and narrowband (NB)-UVB versus NB-UVB monotherapy on the cellular and molecular markers in vitiligo skin. The results showed that combined therapy led to a significant reduction in immune cells, modulation of related markers, and increased melanogenesis markers. The molecular findings support the clinical analysis that apremilast may enhance the repigmentation effects of NB-UVB in generalized vitiligo.
