While guidelines exist in the UK and Scotland, Norway lacks a national guideline for managing the unanticipated difficult airway in the delivery room and neonatal intensive care unit. Anesthesiology experience shows that a well-defined algorithm, advance planning, and routine practicing can prepare the resuscitation team to respond adequately to the challenges of a difficult airway situation.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for medical personnel to protect themselves during airway management procedures, and a novel protective tent has been developed to reduce aerosol spread risk. Through simulation studies and experiments, the use of the protective tent was shown to decrease contamination of medical personnel, providing a theoretical basis for gas curing and droplet intubation procedures. This inexpensive and simple method offers an additional precautionary measure for frontline medical personnel dealing with patients of unknown COVID-19 status.

Summary: During the current pandemic, there has been a rise in post-intubation tracheal stenosis (PITS) in COVID-19 patients. This study analyzed data from patients with severe symptomatic upper airway complications referred to the institution for interdisciplinary bronchoscopic and/or surgical management. The results showed complex tracheal stenoses in the subglottic or mid-tracheal area, with fracture and distortion of the tracheal wall in majority of the cases. Different treatment modalities were used, and post-treatment complications were successfully managed. The study also suggests that prolonged intubation, pronation maneuvers, oversized tubes or cuffs, and patient- or disease-specific factors may contribute to the development of PITS. Careful prevention, early detection, and effective management of these complications are crucial.
