Summary: The study found that patients who underwent operative intervention for complications after bariatric surgery at Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) accredited centers were more likely to be Caucasian, have laparoscopic surgeries, have shorter hospital stays, and be discharged home. Inpatient mortality and total charges per patient did not differ significantly between the two groups.

Summary: This article introduces various new nutrient-stimulated, hormone-based therapies for obesity and type 2 diabetes, which have caused a buzz at the 2023 American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions. Among them, a phase 2 trial showed that the triple-hormone-receptor agonist retatrutide has unprecedented efficacy in treating obesity.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the efficiency, safety, and health outcomes of bariatric surgery in government-funded hospitals (GFH) versus privately funded hospitals (PFH). The data collected from the Australia and New Zealand Bariatric Surgery Registry showed that although there were baseline differences in patient characteristics, both GFH and PFH had comparable outcomes in terms of diabetes remission, adverse events, and length of stay.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the quality of surgical guidelines on bariatric/metabolic surgery. Four independent reviewers used the AGREE II tool to assess the methodological quality of the included guidelines and conducted a comparative analysis of the main recommendations for surgical methods. Results showed that nine surgical guidelines were included, with five articles worthy of clinical recommendation based on AGREE II scores over 60%. The overall rigor of development was relatively low with an average score of 50.82%. Only 4 out of 15 key recommendations had a grade A rating.

Summary: Bariatric surgery is effective in achieving weight loss and remission of obesity-related comorbidities, but some patients may fail to lose enough weight or experience complications, requiring revisional surgeries. Robotic-assisted revisional bariatric surgeries (RBS) are technically challenging procedures, but studies demonstrate their safety and feasibility. However, long operative times and high costs remain major drawbacks.

Summary: Patients with morbid obesity and liver disease undergoing liver transplantation may benefit from weight loss before the procedure to reduce postoperative complications. Various weight loss strategies such as intragastric balloons and bariatric surgery combined with specific diets can help achieve this goal. Studies suggest that weight loss before LT can lead to better surgical outcomes for patients.

Summary: Reporting quality of bariatric surgery RCTs was evaluated in this study, with findings indicating a lack of adherence to NPT extension criteria and an improvement over time in CONSORT statement scores. Higher CONSORT scores were associated with publication in core clinical journals, protocol registration, and funding. No factors were found to be associated with NPT extension scores. Efforts are needed to improve reporting standards in bariatric surgery RCTs.

Summary: Both gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy can lead to diabetes remission, but the choice between the two procedures depends on patient factors and disease severity. Gastric bypass is associated with higher insulin discontinuation rates and complication rates compared to sleeve gastrectomy. However, if patients are only using oral diabetic medication, the type of procedure does not predict medication discontinuation. Disease severity is an important factor in selecting the optimal procedure.

Summary: This study identifies the most productive types of hospitals by constructing production frontiers for each type of hospital, where general hospitals composed of all departments, general hospitals lacking only the Chinese medicine department, and hospitals with pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology departments are found to be the three most productive types. Not-for-profit hospitals are also shown to be more productive than for-profit hospitals.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of ripple effect on supply chain resilience by analyzing the presence of cycles among chain reactions. The research method provides insights into the causal relationships among factors influencing supply chain resilience and their overall impact. A case study of an automotive industry supply chain demonstrates how these connections ultimately affect supply chain resilience.

Summary: This paper develops a simulation model to evaluate the performance of an IBLC in Spain. Results show increased profits of about 55.7% and reduced environmental emissions of 24.2% per tonne of bio-commodity produced. The scientific contribution lies in the dynamic supplier selection model based on social, environmental, and economic criteria, as well as the integration of supplier selection and operations evaluation for the IBLC.
