Frailty is a condition that can increase the risk of falls. In addition, foot pain can influence older adults and affect their frail condition. The main objective was to measure the frailty degree in older adults in a Spanish population with foot pain from moderate to severe. Method: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. A sample of people older than 60 years (n= 52), including 26 males and 26 females, were recruited, and frailty disability was measured using the 5-Frailty scale and the Edmonton Frailty scale (EFS). Results: Spearman's correlation coefficients were categorized as weak (rs <= 0.40), moderate (0.41 <= rs >= 0.69), or strong (0.70 <= rs >= 1.00). There was a statistically significant correlation for the total score (p< 0.001) and most of the subscales of the 5-Frailty scale compared with the EFS, except for Mood (p> 0.05). In addition, females and males showed similar 5-Frailty and Edmonton Frail scales scores with no difference (p> 0.05). Conclusion: Foot pain above 5 points, i.e., from moderate to severe, does not affect the fragility more in one sex than another.

Effect on the reduction of bacterial load after surgical hand antisepsis with triclosan 0.5% compared to triclosan 0.5% followed by 70% alcoholic solution

Luis Sante, Maria Luisa Gomez-Lus, Carlos Martin-Villa, Ricardo Becerro-de-Bengoa-Vallejo, Luis Alou, David Sevillano

Summary: The use of Triclosan 0.5% by scrubbing does not meet the criteria for surgical hand preparation (SHP) according to UNE-EN12791. However, using Triclosan 0.5% by scrubbing followed by hand rubbing with 70% ethanol is suitable, although it does not provide sustained effect. Therefore, the use of Triclosan in SHP should be avoided due to restrictions on its use in consumer antiseptic products.

Repeatability and reliability of the footwear assessment tool in Spanish patients: A transcultural adaptation

Emmanuel Navarro-Flores, Marta Elena Losa-Iglesias, Israel Casado-Hernandez, Ricardo Becerro-de-Bengoa-Vallejo, Carlos Romero-Morales, Patricia Palomo-Lopez, Daniel Lopez-Lopez, Ana Marta Jimenez-Cebrian

Summary: This study aimed to provide appropriate footwear recommendations for different situations and patients. Footwear alterations can lead to musculoskeletal disorders, foot ulcers, increased plantar pressure, bacterial growth, and low back pain. The assessment tool showed good test-retest reliability and applicability, with no significant differences between most domains except for forefoot height.

Influence of Footwear Features on Oxygen Consumption and Running Economy: A Review

Miguel Angel Melero-Lozano, Marta San-Antolin, Davinia Vicente-Campos, J. L. Chicharro, Ricardo Becerro-de-Bengoa-Vallejo, Marta Elena Losa-Iglesias, David Rodriguez-Sanz, Cesar Calvo-Lobo

Summary: The use of new technology in racing shoes has been shown to improve the performance of runners, especially in terms of oxygen consumption. However, there is still a lack of understanding about which specific features of the shoes can decrease oxygen consumption during running. This study aimed to determine the influence of footwear features, such as shoe mass, cushioning system, longitudinal bending stiffness, and comfort feeling, on running economy.

Relationship between Sports Practice, Physical and Mental Health and Anxiety-Depressive Symptomatology in the Spanish Prison Population

Maria Penado Abilleira, Maria-Paula Rios-de-Deus, David Tome-Lourido, Maria-Luisa Rodicio-Garcia, Maria-Jose Mosquera-Gonzalez, Daniel Lopez-Lopez, Juan Gomez-Salgado

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of physical and mental health and anxiety-depressive symptomatology among a group of Galician inmates, and if these were influenced by their sports practice. The results showed that those who engaged in physical activity during their incarceration had better physical and mental health and lower levels of anxiety and depression. The study also found a negative association between perceived health levels and anxiety-depressive symptoms, with perceived physical health explaining 35% of the variance in perceived mental health. These findings highlight the importance of promoting physical activity in penitentiary institutions.
