Forest policy and decision-makers are challenged by the need to balance the increasing demand for multiple ecosystem services while addressing the impacts of natural disturbances (e.g., wildfires, droughts, wind, insect attacks) and global change scenarios (e.g., climate change) on its potential supply. This challenge motivates the development of a framework for incorporating concerns with a wide range of ecosystem services in multiple criteria management planning contexts. Thus, the paper focused on both the analysis of the current state-of-the art research in forest management planning and the development of a conceptual framework to accommodate various components in a forest management process. On the basis of a thorough recent classification of forest management planning problems and the state-of-the-art research, we defined the key dimensions of the framework and the process. The emphasis was on helping to identify how concerns with a wide range of ecosystem services may be analyzed and better understood by forest ecosystem management planning. This research discusses the potential of contemporary management planning approaches to address multiple forest ecosystem services. It highlights the need for a multi-level perspective and appropriate spatial resolution to integrate multiple ecosystem services. It discusses the importance of methods and tools that may help support stakeholders' involvement and public participation in hierarchical planning processes. The research addresses the need of methods and tools that may encapsulate the ecological, economic, and social complexity of forest ecosystem management to provide an efficient plan, information about tradeoffs between ecosystem services, and the sensitivity of the plan to uncertain parameters (e.g., prices, climate change) on time.

An Ecological-Economic Approach to Assess Impacts of the Expansion of Eucalyptus Plantations in Agroforest Landscapes of Northern Ethiopia

Dagm Abate, Jose G. Borges, Susete Marques, Vladimir Bushenkov

Summary: The conversion of fertile croplands to Eucalyptus woodlots in Ethiopian highlands raises concerns related to food production, water resources, carbon and other ecosystem services. This study analyzes the tradeoffs between economic gains from harvesting Eucalyptus timber and food production, carbon and water use, and provides alternative optimal Pareto-front points for decision makers.

Solving a harvest scheduling optimization problem with constraints on clearcut area and clearcut proximity

Isabel Martins, Filipe Alvelos, Adelaide Cerveira, Jan Kaspar, Robert Marusak

Summary: This study aims at solving a harvesting scheduling optimization problem with constraints on the clearcut area with additional constraints on clearcut proximity to reduce the negative environmental impact of excessive harvesting. The connected-bucket model, Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition, and branch-and-price approach are proposed and compared for solving the problem. The branch-and-price approach found better solutions for the majority of the instances.

Introducing New Index in Forest Roads Pavement Management System

Mohammad Javad Heidari, Akbar Najafi, Jose G. Borges

Summary: This research evaluates a method for rating the surface condition of forest roads and adapts it to the forest road network. The study finds that the condition ratings of forest roads differ from commonly used indices. Linear regression analysis identifies effective parameters for numerical assessment of road conditions.

Opportunity Costs of In Situ Carbon Storage Derived by Multiple-Objective Stand-Level Optimization-Results from Case Studies in Portugal and Germany

Mengistie Kindu, Logan Robert Bingham, Jose G. Borges, Susete Marques, Olha Nahorna, Jeannette Eggers, Thomas Knoke

Summary: Considering in situ carbon storage in forest management has become important due to the pressure to reduce carbon emissions. This study presents case studies from Portugal and Germany that analyze the opportunity costs of in situ carbon storage. The results show that the opportunity costs of in situ carbon storage are higher than conservative estimates but lower than alternative cost estimates for future damages caused by CO2 emissions. The study also highlights the benefits of adopting closer-to-nature forest management systems in increasing carbon storage.

Characterizing and assessing key ecosystem services in a representative forest ecosystem in Turkey

Emin Zeki Baskent

Summary: Characterizing and managing multiple ecosystem services is crucial for making decisions in sustainable forest management. This study focuses on identifying and assessing the biophysical and spatial distribution of ecosystem services such as wood production, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration in the Kumluca state forest in Turkey. The findings highlight the importance of quantifying and valuing ecosystem services to facilitate effective communication and decision-making for sustainable resource management. The comprehensive characterization, modeling, valuation, and participatory approach are key strategies for achieving conservation and sustainable use of ecosystem services.

Exploring the effects of various rotation lengths on the ecosystem services within a multiple-use management framework

Emin Zeki Baskent, Jan Kaspar

Summary: This study uses the ETCAP model to simulate the impact of different rotation lengths on forest development and ecosystem services, using the Burucek forest planning unit as a case study area. The results show that shorter rotation lengths lead to increased harvest levels, net present values, groundwater and soil loss, and decreased forest volume, understory, basal area, carbon storage and cultural values. On the other hand, longer rotation lengths result in higher carbon storage, forest volume, average age, basal area and cultural values. Therefore, the choice of optimal rotation length depends on management objectives, forest structure and ecosystem service requirements.

Statistical analysis of extreme temperatures in India in the period 1951-2020

Flavio Ferraz Vieira, Manuela Oliveira, Marco Aurelio Sanfins, Eugenio Garcao, Hariprasad Dasari, Venkata Dodla, G. C. Satyanarayana, Joaquim Costa, Jose G. Borges

Summary: Extreme temperatures have a direct impact on extreme atmospheric events and can be addressed by estimating and anticipating maximum temperature occurrences. This research focuses on analyzing maximum temperature trends in 543 microregions in India between 1951 and 2020. The results show that 27% of microregions experienced maximum temperatures above 45°C in at least one year, and 80% of microregions had maximum temperatures above 40°C. The model developed predicts that in 20 years, at least one occurrence of maximum temperature above 45°C would happen in 15.83% of microregions, increasing to 21.54% in 50 years.

Expert-Based Assessment of the Potential of Non-Wood Forest Products to Diversify Forest Bioeconomy in Six European Regions

Patrick Huber, Mikko Kurttila, Teppo Hujala, Bernhard Wolfslehner, Mariola Sanchez-Gonzalez, Maria Pasalodos-Tato, Sergio de-Miguel, Jose Antonio Bonet, Marlene Marques, Jose G. Borges, Cristian Mihai Enescu, Lucian Dinca, Harald Vacik

Summary: The forest-based sector plays a significant role in supporting Europe's transition to a more integrated and bio-based circular economy. Non-wood forest products (NWFPs) have great potential to diversify the forest bioeconomy, providing additional income and ecological benefits. However, there is a lack of attention and knowledge regarding the socio-economic relevance of NWFPs, which hinders forest-based decision making. This study investigates the future potential of 38 NWFPs through multi-criteria analysis and highlights the opportunities for forest owners to focus on the joint production of wood and non-wood resources.

Future forest fires as functions of climate change and attack time for central Bohemian region, Czech Republic

Peter Lohmander, Zohreh Mohammadi, Jan Kaspar, Meryem Tahri, Roman Bercak, Jaroslav Holusa, Robert Marusak

Summary: This paper presents a new analysis of how global warming may affect the size of forest fires, taking into consideration air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. The results indicate that higher temperatures, lower humidity, and stronger winds caused by global warming could lead to larger fires. Additionally, reducing the attack time and improving firefighting response can help decrease the size of fires.
