OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the evidence for the association between food consumption according to processing and cardiometabolic factors in adults and/or the elderly. METHOD: Two independent evaluators analyzed the electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science and Lilacs until December 2018. We used the following terms: (convenience foods OR food processing OR highly-processed OR industrialized foods OR minimally-processed OR prepared foods OR processed foods OR ultra-processed OR ultraprocessed OR ultra processed OR unprocessed) AND (metabolic syndrome OR hypertension OR blood pressure OR diabetes mellitus OR glucose OR glycaemia OR insulin OR cholesterol OR triglycerides OR blood lipids OR overweight OR obesity) AND (adult OR adults OR adulthood OR aged OR elderly OR old). We assessed methodological and evidence qualities, and also extracted information for the qualitative synthesis from the selected studies. RESULTS: Of the 6,423 studies identified after removing duplicates, eleven met the eligibility criteria. The main food classification we used was Nova. The consumption of ultra-processed foods was positively associated with overweight and obesity, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome. All articles included met more than 50% of the methodological quality criteria. The quality of evidence was considered moderate for the outcome overweight and obesity and weak for hypertension and metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: The Nova food classification stands out in the area of nutritional epidemiology when assessing the effects of food processing on health outcomes. Although caution is required in the interpretation, the results indicated that the consumption of ultra-processed foods can have an unfavorable impact in the health of individuals.

Association between maternal prepregnancy body mass index with offspring cardiometabolic risk factors: analysis of three Brazilian birth cohorts

Mariane da Silva Dias, Alicia Matijasevich, Ana Maria B. Menezes, Fernando C. Barros, Fernando C. Wehrmeister, Helen Goncalves, Ina S. Santos, Bernardo Lessa Horta

Summary: Evidence suggests that maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) is associated with offspring cardiometabolic risk factors. This study found that offspring of overweight and obese mothers had higher blood pressure and non-HDL cholesterol compared to offspring of normal-weight mothers. Offspring BMI completely explained the association between maternal prepregnancy BMI and offspring cardiometabolic risk factors.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of breastfeeding and later overweight or obesity expands on previous study for World Health Organization

Bernardo Lessa Horta, Nigel Rollins, Mariane S. Dias, Valquiria Garcez, Rafael Perez-Escamilla

Summary: Breastfeeding reduces the odds of overweight or obesity in children. Even after considering the effects of publication bias and residual confounding, breastfeeding remains beneficial. The benefits of breastfeeding are also observed in studies that are susceptible to positive confounding by socioeconomic status.

Intake of ultra-processed foods and sleep-related outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Felipe Mendes Delpino, Lilian Munhoz Figueiredo, Thayna Ramos Flores, Erika Aparecida Silveira, Francine Silva dos Santos, Andre Oliveira Werneck, Maria Laura da Costa Louzada, Ricardo Alexandre Arcencio, Bruno Pereira Nunes

Summary: The aim of this review article was to assess the association between the intake of ultra-processed foods and sleep-related outcomes. Fifteen cross-sectional studies were included, and the majority showed a significant association between high intake of ultra-processed foods and sleep-related outcomes. The findings suggest a moderate credibility of the evidence, and further longitudinal studies and clinical trials are needed to confirm the results.

Birth conditions nutritional status in childhood associated with cardiometabolic risk factors at 30 years of age: a cohort study

Vania Pereira Oliveira, Mariane da Silva Dias, Natalia Peixoto Lima, Bernardo Lessa Horta

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between birth conditions, nutritional status, childhood growth, and cardiometabolic risk factors at 30 years of age. The researchers also examined whether body mass index (BMI) at 30 years old mediated the relationship between childhood weight gain and cardiometabolic risk factors. The findings suggest that rapid relative weight gain after 2 years of age may have long-term consequences on the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders.

COVID-19 and outpatient care: a nationwide household survey

Bernardo L. Horta, Mariangela F. Silveira, Aluisio J. D. Barros, Fernando P. Hartwig, Mariane S. Dias, Ana M. B. Menezes, Pedro C. Hallal

Summary: The study aimed to assess the proportion of the population in 133 Brazilian municipalities who did not seek care or attend health services for health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings showed that 11.8% of the participants did not seek care despite being ill, 17.3% failed to attend routine or screening examinations, and 23.9% reported one or both outcomes. Health service closure and fear of COVID-19 infection were the main reasons for not seeking care. Women and the poorest individuals were more likely to not seek healthcare, while those who self-identified as white were less likely to do so. The study highlights the critical impact of the pandemic on indigenous populations and the poorest, who are also less likely to seek care for other health conditions.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death globally, and IL-6 is a biomarker of cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with IL-6 concentration in serum up to 30 years of age. Results showed that body composition was the main predictor for IL-6 in both males and females, highlighting the importance of avoiding overweight for the prevention and control of cardiovascular risk.
