Summary: The study found that nearly half of older New Zealanders living in aged residential care facilities were at risk of malnutrition or were malnourished. A higher prevalence of malnutrition was associated with untreated dental caries. Poorer cognitive function and greater dependency were important risk factors for malnutrition.

Summary: This study examined the remaining lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease over the past six decades in a predominantly White community-based cohort. The findings revealed that average life expectancy increased while the risk of cardiovascular disease decreased. This highlights the importance of continued and effective primary prevention efforts, as well as better screening and treatment of risk factors.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between age, healthspan, and chronic illness among former professional American-style football players. The results showed higher prevalence of arthritis and dementia/Alzheimer's disease among these players across all age ranges, while hypertension and diabetes were more prevalent only in the youngest age group. Former professional ASF players were also less likely to have intact healthspan compared to the general population.

Summary: The consumption of unprocessed or minimally processed foods is associated with lower prevalence of certain cardiometabolic risk factors in individuals with established cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, it is also associated with a simultaneous occurrence of coronary and peripheral artery disease and stroke. These findings highlight the importance of considering the profile of the target population and the composition and quality of meals consumed in nutritional guidance.

Summary: For women with a history of pre-eclampsia (PE) in their first pregnancy, the risk of recurrence and maternal and neonatal outcomes in subsequent birth are important considerations. The study found that women with PE have a lower subsequent birth rate, but the absolute difference is modest. However, maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality are substantially improved in a subsequent pregnancy.

Summary: In healthy high-risk individuals, the presence and volume of coronary artery plaque are associated with larger WMH volumes, appearing the strongest for periventricular WMH. These findings in high-risk families suggest a disease relationship in 2 different vascular beds, possibly due to genetic predisposition.

Summary: The study found that men and women have similar intra-assessment resting metabolic rate variability, but there are differences in the indicators related to cardiometabolic health. For men, respiratory exchange ratio was positively associated with BMI and adiposity, while other indicators were negatively associated with cardiometabolic risk factors. In women, variability in carbon dioxide production and resting energy expenditure were negatively associated with adiposity and cardiometabolic risk factors.

Summary: Host genetic variants may influence the oral microbiome and play a role in the link between periodontitis and systemic diseases. This study investigated the associations between host genetic variants and subgingival microbiota in patients with metabolic syndrome. Specific SNPs within certain genes were found to be associated with microbial diversity, but no genome-wide associations were detected for periodontitis severity or metabolic syndrome components. Severe periodontitis was associated with pathogenic bacteria. Some SNPs were correlated with specific bacterial genera and taxa. This suggests that host genotypes may contribute to dysregulated immune responses in periodontitis and further interact with the oral microbiome.

Summary: Evidence suggests that maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) is associated with offspring cardiometabolic risk factors. This study found that offspring of overweight and obese mothers had higher blood pressure and non-HDL cholesterol compared to offspring of normal-weight mothers. Offspring BMI completely explained the association between maternal prepregnancy BMI and offspring cardiometabolic risk factors.

Summary: The aim of this review article was to assess the association between the intake of ultra-processed foods and sleep-related outcomes. Fifteen cross-sectional studies were included, and the majority showed a significant association between high intake of ultra-processed foods and sleep-related outcomes. The findings suggest a moderate credibility of the evidence, and further longitudinal studies and clinical trials are needed to confirm the results.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between birth conditions, nutritional status, childhood growth, and cardiometabolic risk factors at 30 years of age. The researchers also examined whether body mass index (BMI) at 30 years old mediated the relationship between childhood weight gain and cardiometabolic risk factors. The findings suggest that rapid relative weight gain after 2 years of age may have long-term consequences on the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular disorders.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the proportion of the population in 133 Brazilian municipalities who did not seek care or attend health services for health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings showed that 11.8% of the participants did not seek care despite being ill, 17.3% failed to attend routine or screening examinations, and 23.9% reported one or both outcomes. Health service closure and fear of COVID-19 infection were the main reasons for not seeking care. Women and the poorest individuals were more likely to not seek healthcare, while those who self-identified as white were less likely to do so. The study highlights the critical impact of the pandemic on indigenous populations and the poorest, who are also less likely to seek care for other health conditions.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death globally, and IL-6 is a biomarker of cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with IL-6 concentration in serum up to 30 years of age. Results showed that body composition was the main predictor for IL-6 in both males and females, highlighting the importance of avoiding overweight for the prevention and control of cardiovascular risk.
