Summary: Given the increasing number of patients with blindness caused by macular, optic nerve, and visual pathway diseases, there is a growing interest in the potential of electrical stimulation devices for vision restoration. These devices can be categorized into visual prostheses, electric field stimulation, and neuromodulation, each serving different purposes and facing various limitations. This review discusses the advancements, limitations, and potential future directions of these three approaches.

Summary: The study describes the neurodevelopmental outcomes in 502 Italian preterm very low birth weight infants at 24 months of corrected age, with findings suggesting that factors such as male gender, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, abnormal neurological assessment, and severe brain ultrasound abnormalities are associated with poor outcomes.

Summary: Utilization of pancreases for transplantation remains lower than other organs, with a significant number of solid pancreases being discarded. Better graft assessment at retrieval could minimize unnecessary organ travel and discards, and closer links with islet programmes may allow for better utilization of discarded grafts.

Summary: The study found that the proportion of patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia choosing surgery decreased over the past 11 years, but the timing of surgery was not delayed. The incidence of acute urinary retention and renal failure in surgical patients decreased, as did the duration of catheterization and hospitalization postoperatively.

Summary: This retrospective study reviewed laboratory-confirmed malaria cases in children admitted to two large university teaching hospitals in Brussels between 2009 and 2019. The majority of cases were acquired during visits to malaria-endemic countries by children living in Belgium (68%) and by visitors or newly installed migrants (31%). The study also found that the peak incidence of malaria occurred in August and September, with Plasmodium falciparum responsible for 89% of all cases. Additionally, 19.3% of the children developed severe malaria, with VFR travelers being the most affected and showing specific characteristics.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed an Italian cohort of GBS patients over 11 years, and found differences in clinical-neurophysiological features compared to patients from other regions. Different GBS subtypes also showed variations in clinical characteristics and immunology.

Summary: The study found that azole resistance in C. tropicalis causing invasive candidiasis in China has been increasing, particularly to fluconazole, with a high rate of cross-resistance to voriconazole. Despite low echinocandin resistance, multi-drug resistance was observed in some isolates, indicating a growing nationwide challenge that requires effective interventions.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed the clinical features, treatment modalities, and prognosis of 14 cases of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the urinary bladder (IMTUB). It found that IMTUB is a clinically rare disease with a good prognosis, mainly treated with surgical removal of the tumor.

Summary: The interaction between Filipendula ulmaria and its rust pathogen Triphragmium ulmariae on the islands of the Skeppsvik archipelago in northern Sweden over 30 years showed that while the host metapopulation plateaued, the pathogen metapopulation experienced greater change. Disease incidence initially rose before declining in the last decade, while prevalence of disease in infected populations declined steadily. This study highlighted the impact of pathogen on long-term dynamics of host populations, indicating a potential cascade of changes in community species composition and diversity.

Summary: In the UK, child mortality has decreased over the past three decades, with higher rates generally found in males. A study on infant mortality in Paediatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs) revealed that female infants have a higher risk of death compared to male infants, even after adjusting for various factors.

Summary: The study showed that children with severe nausea and vomiting treated with GES experienced significant improvement in symptoms and were able to tolerate oral nutrition better. Although there were some complications during treatment, the majority of patients were satisfied with the treatment outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to assess prognostic factors of invasive pasteurellosis. A retrospective cohort study found that abnormal coagulation function (prolonged prothrombin time) and low platelet counts were common factors in non-survivors. Furthermore, a history of neoplasia, evidence of bacteremia, and low hemoglobin level were identified as poor prognostic factors.

Summary: The incidence of ureteric injury during hysterectomy in Norway was 1.2%; 11% of cases involved a claim for compensation, with 15% approval rate. Most ureteric injuries were not recognized during the surgery, and documentation of preoperative identification of the ureters was often missing. Vigilance towards pain as a postoperative symptom of unrecognized ureteric injury could lead to earlier diagnosis and treatment.

Summary: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the rate and causes for reoperation following spinal cord stimulation and identify risk factors for reoperation. The study found that lead migration or misplacement was the most common cause for revision, while no pain relief was the secondary cause. Younger age was associated with a higher risk of reoperation, while higher BMI and diabetes were associated with infection development. Accurate positioning of the spinal cord stimulators, design of smaller generators, and preoperative optimization of patients could improve the overall reoperation rate and clinical outcomes.

Summary: The pharmacodynamics of opioids for chronic peripheral neuropathic pain are complex and go beyond classical opioid receptor theory. Proteome analysis of cerebrospinal fluid from patients on opioids showed an increase in proteins related to nervous system development and myeloid leukocyte activation. In addition, patients on opioids had lower expression levels of proteins related to neutrophil mediated immunity, and higher expression levels of neural proteins and receptors compared to the control group.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of stimulus frequency on ECAP amplitude and perceived stimulus sensation in patients undergoing SCS therapy, showing an inverse relationship between frequency and both amplitude and sensation strength. This suggests that frequency coding and population coding play important roles in conveying SCS-induced sensation.

Summary: The study demonstrated that equivalent clinical benefits could be achieved with burst SCS using either paresthesia mapping or anatomic landmark-based approaches for lead placement in chronic low back pain patients. Nonparesthesia-based approaches, like the anatomic landmark-based lead placement investigated in this study, have the potential to simplify SCS implantation and improve current surgical practices.
