Endemic and restricted-range species are considered to be particularly vulnerable to the effects of environmental change, which makes assessing likely climate change effects on geographic distributions of such species important to the development of integrated conservation strategies. Here, we determined distributional patterns for an endemic species ofDianthus(Dianthus polylepis) in the Irano-Turanian region using a maximum-entropy algorithm. In total, 70 occurrence points and 19 climatic variables were used to estimate the potential distributional area under current conditions and two future representative concentration pathway (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5) scenarios under seven general circulation models for 2050. Mean diurnal range, iso-thermality, minimum temperature of coldest quarter, and annual precipitation were major factors that appeared to structure the distribution of the species. Most current potential suitable areas were located in montane regions. Model transfers to future-climate scenarios displayed upward shifts in elevation and northward shifts geographically for the species. Our results can be used to define high-priority areas in the Irano-Turanian region for conservation management plans for this species and can offer a template for analyses of other endangered and threatened species in the region.

Changes in plant biodiversity facets of rocky outcrops and their surrounding rangelands across precipitation and soil gradients

Fahime Rafiee, Hamid Ejtehadi, Mohammad Farzam, Habib Zare, Maral Bashirzadeh

Summary: Climate and soil factors have significant controls over plant biodiversity in stressful ecosystems. This study examined the simultaneous effects of precipitation and soil gradients on taxonomic and functional diversity in rocky outcrops and rangelands in Iran. The results showed that soil factors had a more consistent and significant impact on plant biodiversity in rocky outcrops, while precipitation factors explained more variation in surrounding rangelands. This study highlights the importance of soil factors in shaping plant biodiversity in stressful ecosystems.

Using multiple ecological evaluators to introduce a proper management plan for urban vacant lots: A case-study from Iran

Esraa Mohammad Alnoiji, Mohammad Bagher Erfanian, Zohreh Atashgahi, Hamid Ejtehadi

Summary: Urban vacant lots in Mashhad, Iran harbor a diverse range of plant species, with the community composition and biodiversity influenced by factors such as income distribution. The study identifies a cluster of vacant lots with the highest species and phylogenetic diversity, suggesting the need for conservation efforts. Comparison of different clusters also reveals the impact of income on vegetation quality.

Vascular flora of Zarrin-Kuh Protected Area in Central Kopet Dagh Mountains, NE Iran: An annotated checklist

Mohammad Sadegh Amiri, Shahryar Saeidi Mehrvarz, Farshid Memariani, Mohammad Reza Joharchi

Summary: This research presents the first checklist of vascular plants of Zarrin-Kuh Protected Area (ZPA) along with their life-form spectrum, phytogeography, and conservation status. The study found that Asteraceae, Poaceae, and other families are prominent in the area, with therophytes and hemicryptophytes being dominant in the life-form spectrum. Additionally, several Iranian endemic and rare plants were discovered, including 17 threatened species.

Habitat characteristics, ecology and biodiversity drivers of plant communities associated with Cousinia edmondsonii, an endemic and critically endangered species in NE Iran

Ali Asghar Arjmandi, Hamid Ejtehadi, Farshid Memariani, Mansour Mesdaghi, Maryam Behroozian

Summary: The sub-alpine areas of western Khorassan-Kopet Dagh Mountains in NE Iran have diverse plant communities with high species diversity and endemism. The dominant life-form and chorotype were hemicryptophytes and Irano-Turanian elements, respectively. Cousinia edmondsonii, a critically endangered narrow endemic plant, was found in communities with higher species diversity and was significantly correlated with topographic and environmental factors.

Nurse shrubs influence plant biodiversity across environmental gradients in rocky outcrops and surrounding rangelands

Fahime Rafiee, Maral Bashirzadeh, Habib Zare, Hamid Ejtehadi, Mohammad Farzam

Summary: The presence of nurse plants plays a critical role in preserving plant biodiversity in rocky outcrops, outweighing the effects of abiotic factors. However, in surrounding rangelands, nurse plants have a negative impact on plant biodiversity. These findings highlight the importance of nurse plants in maintaining plant biodiversity in rocky outcrops.

Survival of experimentally buried large, winged seeds from open sandy habitats defies the established theory of relatedness between seed size, shape, and longevity

Marzieh Bahadoran, Hamid Ejtehadi, Farshid Memariani, Julia Tamas, Peter Csontos

Summary: Accumulated evidence suggests that species with small, rounded seeds tend to have persistent soil seed banks, while those with larger and less isodiametric seeds have transient seed banks. However, in certain special habitats, species may be exceptions to this rule. In sandy soil habitats with open vegetation, seeds can become buried by windblown sand, regardless of their morphology. This study found that six species with large, flattened seeds were capable of forming a persistent soil seed bank in such habitats, bypassing the tradeoff between seed size/shape and seed longevity.
