Summary: This study screened 127 reported ionic liquids for multi-molar SO2 absorption under harsh conditions, identifying a unique cooperative anion-SO2 interaction mode for branched anions. The research provides new insights for the design of task-specific ILs under harsh conditions, with potential sorbents identified for high overall capacity and per-cycle absorption capacity. Additionally, the energies of the reacting orbitals of the anions were found to be linearly correlated to their SO2 binding energies.

Summary: This study investigated the solubility of carbon dioxide in MEA-BMIM hybrid solvents and used response surface methodology to design and analyze the experiments. The results showed that the addition of BMIM in the aqueous solution can enhance the solubility of CO2, and the optimum conditions for CO2 absorption in 30 wt% MEA-BMIM solution were identified.

Summary: A series of pyridinolate anion-functional ionic liquids with different cations were designed and studied for their SO2 absorption properties. The results showed that the interaction between cations and anions, as well as various structural parameters, have significant effects on the absorption of SO2. The mechanism of SO2 absorption was found to involve both physical and chemical adsorption processes.

Summary: The surfactant Akypo LF2 and its salts show significant steric constraints and electrostatic interactions when forming micelles. Experimental results indicate the formation of spherical micelles and highly stabilized aggregates at very high concentrations. The random distribution of negative charges in the headgroups, absence of lyotropic liquid crystalline phases, and extreme shift in cloud-point temperature and composition were observed.

Summary: This study focuses on the application of imidazolium-based polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) as absorbents in two-phase partitioning bioreactors for the removal of n-butanol from dilute aqueous solutions. The synthesis and phase transition temperatures of poly(1-vinyl-3-alkylimidazolium) bromides with different alkyl groups, architectures, and compositions, as well as analogs with various inorganic and carboxylate anions, are described. Equilibrium experiments are conducted to quantify the solute affinity of each PIL, which is measured by the n-butanol partition coefficient (PCBuOH) and n-butanol/water selectivity (alpha(b/w)). A complete ternary phase diagram is created to propose a streamlined n-butanol recovery process.

Summary: Rhenium has important applications in various industries, but its low concentration in the Earth's crust necessitates research on its separation and extraction. This study explored the extraction of rhenium using a demulsification method with an alkyl imidazolium ionic liquid-based microemulsion. Factors such as components of the microemulsion, temperature, acid concentration, and competitive ions were considered. The study found that the components of the microemulsion, alkyl chain length, and acid concentration significantly affected the extraction efficiency.

Summary: In this study, a flat supported liquid membrane was used for the extraction of bisphenol A from aqueous solutions, with the use of an ionic liquid as a carrier. Various experimental parameters were investigated to optimize the transport efficiency, and the results showed that the recovery percentage of bisphenol A was about 89%. The supported liquid membrane-based system displayed acceptable stability with re-impregnation after 5 days of operation.

Summary: Superlubricity between steel surfaces lubricated by mixtures of [Cho][Pro] ionic liquid and glycerol aqueous solution has been achieved, even under humidity between 7 and 9% RH. The addition of 3wt% [Cho][Pro] helps to maintain enough water content for a thin water layer at the interface, leading to lower friction. Interestingly, humidity can be used to control the lubrication state between superlubricity and non-superlubricity.

Summary: This study investigates the impact dynamics of water drops on porous surfaces wetted by a hygroscopic ionic liquid aqueous solution. The dynamic characteristics of water drops on ionic liquid-wetted porous surfaces are compared with those on dry and water-wetted porous surfaces. The results show that water drops barely penetrate on dry porous surfaces at ambient temperature, but can penetrate when the surface temperature is raised or the surface is pre-wetted. The maximum spreading and penetration of the droplet on the ionic liquid-wetted surface are larger and faster than that on the water-wetted surface. The study also explores the effects of the mass fraction of aqueous ionic liquid, impact velocity, and porosity on the spreading and penetration of the droplet.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of the functional group of the cation on the absorption of SO2 acidic gas by amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs). The AAIL functionalized by the COOH group is found to be the most thermodynamically favorable green solvent, with the closest distance between the functional group and captured SO2, as well as the highest net charge-transfer amount of SO2.

Summary: This study presents a method to actively control the discharge characteristics of liquids in electrospray beyond their own physical properties. By coating the concentrated sodium chloride (NaCl) aqueous solution with a layer of ionic liquid using coaxial electrospray, the discharge of the NaCl solution was suppressed and stable electrospray was achieved. The discharge characteristics of coaxial electrospray were thoroughly investigated, along with the effects of applied voltage and flow rates of both liquids. The results showed that the addition of an outer ionic liquid layer increased the current, frequency, and onset voltage of the discharge, while adjusting the flow rates and applied voltage could further control the discharge characteristics.

Summary: The study investigated the recovery of ethanol from dilute aqueous solutions using supported ionic liquid membrane (SILM) perstraction. The combination of [THTDP][N(CN)2] as a solvent and polymeric microporous membrane (PVDF-GVHP) showed the best overall performance, with high flux and selectivity maintained for 240 hours. This SILM perstraction system proved to be a promising alternative to energy-intensive purification techniques for extracting ethanol as low as 2 wt% from fermentation broths.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different side chain groups on the absorption of SO2 using 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium cation with various amino acid anions. The results showed that enlarging the alkyl group from glycinate to leucinate slightly decreased gas absorption interaction energy, while changing the side chain group to methyl thiol (cysteinate) or methyl alcohol (serinate) drastically altered the gas interaction energy. The charge transfer and distance between the anion and absorbed SO2 gas were found to be the lowest in glycinate, making it the most effective absorbent in the study. The distribution of van der Waals (vdW) interaction differed between the glycinate system and the other systems, with the vdW distribution being concentrated and clear in glycinate.
