The present study assesses the electricity generation potential of methane from municipal solid waste through landfill gas to energy technology in 16 districts of Beijing municipality. Municipal solid waste generation potential and methane generation potential from landfills of each of the districts were estimated from 2019 to 2038. Economic viability analysis of landfill gas to energy project based on Net Present Value, Levelized Cost of Energy, and Payback Period was conducted. Besides, environmental impact analysis based on greenhouse gas emissions potential was evaluated. Key results indicate that the generation potential of municipal solid waste during the project period is 55,000 to 2,120,000 tons/year. Chaoyang district has the highest municipal solid waste generation potential, while lower municipal solid waste generation potential was observed in Mentougou district. It is also found that Chaoyang district had the highest electricity generation potential of 8,400,000 to 218,300,000 kWh/year. Findings of the economic feasibility analysis show that landfill gas to energy project is viable in all the districts. However, the project is highly viable in Chaoyang district with more positive net present value ($181,100,000), shorter payback period (1.3years), and lower levelized cost of energy ($0.0613/kWh). Greenhouse gas emission potential of landfill gas without energy recovery was the highest in all the districts. It was realized that landfill gas with energy recovery could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 72.3% in all the districts. This paper will provide scientific guidance for investment in landfill gas to energy projects in Beijing municipality and other municipalities of China. (C) 2020 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Power generation from municipal solid waste land filled in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region

Dan Cudjoe, Myat Su Han, Weiming Chen

Summary: This study evaluated the electricity generation potential of landfill gas to energy projects in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, and conducted economic feasibility and sensitivity analysis. The results showed that the project is feasible in all locations, with higher feasibility in Beijing, shorter investment payback period, and lower cost.

Economic feasibility and environmental impact analysis of landfill gas to energy technology in African urban areas

Dan Cudjoe, Myat Su Han

Summary: Landfilling is one of the cheapest methods of municipal solid waste disposal worldwide, but it also produces greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. This study focuses on the economic feasibility and environmental impact of landfill gas to energy projects in urban areas of Africa, finding that most countries in Africa have positive net present value for such projects. However, it also highlights the increase in acid gas emissions from electricity generation using landfill gas.

Predicting determinants of consumers' purchase motivation for electric vehicles: An application of Maslow's hierarchy of needs model

Lixin Cui, Yonggui Wang, Weiming Chen, Wen Wen, Myat Su Han

Summary: This study predicts the determinants of Chinese consumers' purchase motivation for electric vehicles (EVs) based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs model. The results show that environmental concern is the most significant predictor of EVs purchase motivation, followed by price consciousness, openness to experience, social influence, and self-esteem. Useful recommendations for local policymakers and global EVs marketers are provided to promote EVs adoption and understand Chinese consumers' motivation.

Environmental implications of changes in China's inter-provincial trade structure

Weiming Chen, Shen Qu, Myat Su Han

Summary: This study examined the complex impacts of changes in interprovincial trade structure on the environment in China, finding that adjustments in trade structure can help reduce carbon emissions and water consumption, but may exacerbate water resource imbalances and increase land use. Suggestions include internalizing the cost of carbon emissions, adjusting water prices to balance resource distribution.

Global environmental inequality: Evidence from embodied land and virtual water trade

Weiming Chen, Jia-Ning Kang, Myat Su Han

Summary: This study investigates the trade-off between economic growth and environmental conservation in global trade. Findings show that while global trade encourages optimal distribution of land resources, it exacerbates the uneven distribution of water resources. Developed countries have lower environmental costs compared to developing countries, and the inequality of virtual water trade is higher than that of embodied land trade.

Determinants of eco-innovation adoption of small and medium enterprises: An empirical analysis in Myanmar

Myat Su Han, Weiming Chen

Summary: This study investigates the determinants of SMEs' adoption of eco-innovation in Myanmar based on the theory of reasoned action. The results show that customer demands, rivalry pressures, managerial environmental concerns, environmental regulations, and firm innovation capabilities positively influence eco-innovation adoption, with firm innovation capabilities playing the most significant role. The research findings provide insights for policymakers, SMEs managers, and researchers on driving factors of eco-innovation adoption in Myanmar.

Two facets of pride and knowledge hiding: an empirical analysis

Myat Su Han, Daniel Peter Hampson, Yonggui Wang

Summary: This study reveals that hubristic pride is positively related to knowledge hiding, while authentic pride is negatively related to it, and these relationships depend on employees' level of self-efficacy. The study suggests that managers should incorporate measures for moral emotions in recruitment and selection criteria, and design strategies to induce moral emotions in the workplace to reduce knowledge hiding.

Myat Su Han, Daniel Peter Hampson, Yonggui Wang, Hong Wang

Summary: This study empirically establishes the positive relationship between consumer confidence and green purchase intention, offering insights into the mechanisms underlying this relationship. The study highlights the mediating role of environmental and status consciousness. The findings have implications for retailers in developing marketing tactics and shed light on the importance of consumer confidence in addressing environmental challenges.

Consumer confidence and conspicuous consumption: A conservation of resources perspective

Daniel Peter Hampson, Shuang (Sara) Ma, Yonggui Wang, Myat Su Han

Summary: This study examines the relationship between consumer confidence and conspicuous consumption, finding that financial insecurity, need for status, and anticipated luxury guilt each positively mediate this relationship. The effects of consumer confidence on conspicuous consumption via financial insecurity and anticipated luxury guilt are strongest for the highest socioeconomic status consumers.
