Summary: The USA, China, and India are the top producers of municipal solid waste, with waste composition varying based on income levels. Municipal solid waste management options include recycling, incineration, waste-to-energy conversion, composting, or landfilling. Landfilling is a preferred method globally, with critical factors for sustainability including liners, soil cover thickness, leachate collection, and gas recovery facilities. Landfills act as ecological reactors undergoing various transformations, with bioreactor landfills emerging as a next-generation solution for efficient waste stabilization through controlled recirculation.

Summary: This study investigated the abiotic decomposition of simulated Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and its impact on landfill gas components. The results showed that the gas composition and temperature were influenced by the heating rate and time. Higher heating rates led to a decrease in the CH4/CO2 ratio, and the release of hydrogen was directly proportional to the amount of CH4 available in the system.

Summary: The exploration of gas pressure and its distribution in landfills is important for the design and management of municipal solid waste landfills. This study proposed an analytical model to simulate vertical gas flow in a landfill with layered MSWs and verified its reliability. The results showed that vertical gas flow in landfills can be simplified to a quasi-steady-state flow, and a corresponding analytical solution was provided. The proposed solutions showed good agreement with the transient solution. Additionally, temporal and spatial variations of gas generation rate in MSW landfills were considered and compared with the previously described steady-state solution.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of odorants, hazardous pollutants, and greenhouse gas emissions in flare exhaust from municipal solid waste landfills. The results showed that the combustion of flare exhaust significantly reduced odorants and their activity levels, but the odor concentration could still exceed 2,000. Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) were found to dominate the odorants in the flare exhaust, and the major odor contributors were OVOCs and sulfur compounds. Hazardous pollutants, including carcinogens and acute toxic pollutants, as well as greenhouse gases, were emitted from the flares. The combustion efficiency of the flares varied depending on landfill gas composition and flare design, and the pollutant removal efficiency could be lower than 90%, especially for diffusion flares. Acetaldehyde, benzene, toluene, p-cymene, limonene, hydrogen sulfide, and methane were identified as priority monitoring pollutants for flare emissions in landfills. Flares are useful for odor and greenhouse gas control, but they can also be potential sources of odor, hazardous pollutants, and greenhouse gases.

Summary: The study showed that early addition of liquid waste did not stimulate anaerobic decomposition of fresh MSW, and most liquid wastes were not suitable as the sole moisture source for bioreactor landfills. MSW reactors co-disposed with sludge produced more methane, while reactors co-disposed with gypsum board or foundry waste also generated methane, despite inhibitory effects indicated by biochemical methane potential (BMP) results.

Summary: The recovery of 12 critical raw materials (CRM) from municipal solid wastes (MSW) via leachate recirculation was evaluated using a 4 L semi-pilot scale column percolation. The results showed that the recovery of the metal (loid)s was mainly influenced by pH, organic content, type of metal(loid)s, age of the waste, and redox potential. A comparison of leachate from the leachate recirculated columns before and after the initiation of recirculation indicates an increase in the concentrations of certain CRM and metalloids. The first recirculation cycle supported achieving 100 % recovery. CRM and metalloids in leachate can be recovered, with concentrations usually below 1 mg/L. Leachate recirculation can enhance the increasing concentration of CRM in landfill leachate.

Summary: Landfilling is one of the cheapest methods of municipal solid waste disposal worldwide, but it also produces greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. This study focuses on the economic feasibility and environmental impact of landfill gas to energy projects in urban areas of Africa, finding that most countries in Africa have positive net present value for such projects. However, it also highlights the increase in acid gas emissions from electricity generation using landfill gas.

Findings show that while global trade encourages optimal distribution of land resources, it exacerbates the uneven distribution of water resources. Developed countries have lower environmental costs compared to developing countries, and the inequality of virtual water trade is higher than that of embodied land trade.
