Summary: This study examined the relationship between publication output before a PhD degree and subsequent research activities. The results showed a positive correlation between the number of publications, H-index, and citations before and after the PhD. However, these metrics measured ten years after the PhD were negatively correlated with the age of the researcher at the time of obtaining the degree. The study also found that Philosophy and History, as well as Engineering, showed the strongest correlation between pre- and post-PhD output.

Summary: The development of the multispecies concept within the Trichinella genus in the 1950s was based on increasing host-specific peculiarities among different geographic isolates. Russian scientists described three new species in 1972, opening up the idea that the genus Trichinella was not monospecific and widening the host range. Over the past 27 years, new technologies and investigations have led to the description of four new species and two new genotypes, with some taxonomic issues still unresolved. These advancements have also enhanced phylogenetic, zoogeographical, and epidemiological knowledge for future studies.

Summary: This study examined hearing thresholds in senior adults aged 80 years and older and compared the results with the current ISO 7029 reference values. The findings revealed that both male and female participants in the study had worse hearing thresholds than expected based on the ISO reference values. Given the significant impact on individuals and society, this is a problem that requires attention.

Summary: Based on data collected from Chinese listed firms between 2005 and 2017, it is found that scientists serving as independent directors effectively mitigate firm over-investment. This finding remains robust even after conducting various tests and controlling for fixed effects. The promotion of independent directors among Chinese listed firms, following a policy shock in 2009, strengthened their monitoring role. The impact of independent directors is stronger in firms with higher agency costs, suggesting the alleviation of agency problems.

Summary: Animals need to respond to threats and approach rewards, which are often accompanied by motivational conflict. A semi-naturalistic threat imminence continuum model can simulate this conflict and integrate multiple behaviors into a single paradigm. This study is important for understanding animal foraging behavior and human approach-avoidance conflicts and associated psychopathologies.

Summary: Many stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders show significant sex differences in terms of frequency and symptoms. Glucocorticoids, the primary stress hormones, have been implicated in the development of these disorders, but their contribution to the observed sex bias is poorly understood. This study investigates the effects of glucocorticoids on gene expression and behavior in the hippocampus, revealing sex-dependent and independent actions of glucocorticoids. The findings have important implications for the treatment of stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders in both men and women.
