Summary: Arecoline, the main alkaloid in areca nut, is toxic to neurons, while hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has neuroprotective effects. The study found that arecoline decreased endogenous H2S levels and disrupted autophagic flux in PC12 cells, and exogenous H2S administration alleviated arecoline-induced toxicity. The research also showed that H2S improves arecoline-induced disruption of autophagic flux to protect against neurotoxicity.

Summary: Methionine restriction (MR) as a dietary intervention has been shown to increase longevity and improve metabolism disorders. However, its effects on alleviating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) are not well investigated. This study examines the neuroprotective effects of low methionine intake in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients and APP/PS1 AD model mice and explores the underlying mechanisms.

Summary: Polyamines play a significant role in the interaction between plants and pathogens, with plant PAs involved in immunity against pathogens by amplifying PTI responses through the production of ROS. Pathogens manipulate plant PAs levels for their own benefit, while also producing PAs themselves during infection.

Summary: Changes in polyamine levels play a crucial role in sex differentiation and unisexual flower development in cucumbers. The inhibition of generative organ development of the opposite sex is essential for sex differentiation. Female flowers exhibit higher levels of total polyamines, with increased cadaverine associated with female flower maturation.

Summary: Cells use ubiquitin to mark proteins for degradation, but the mechanism for the degradation of some proteins is unclear. This study found that midnolin promotes the degradation of nuclear proteins by binding to the proteasome, binding to substrates, and using a ubiquitin-like domain to promote substrate degradation.

Summary: This study evaluated the protective effects of CO and H2S on cognitive deficits induced by chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their interactions with the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. The results showed that CO and H2S were able to improve cognitive impairment and restore the expression levels of Nrf2 and HO-1.

Summary: This study found that elabela (ELA) can improve doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity (DIC) by enhancing autophagic flux through activating transcription factor EB (TFEB). ELA may become a potential therapeutic target against DIC.

Summary: The study investigates the potential protective role of hydrogen sulfide in diabetes-induced erectile dysfunction, with findings suggesting that H2S may reduce corporal contraction and fibromuscular changes in diabetic penile tissue, as well as having a link with plasma/urinary levels. These findings indicate that H2S could be a new strategy for preventing and treating diabetes-induced ED.

Summary: Polyamines are essential for normal cell growth and development, and dysregulation of the polyamine pathway can lead to various physiological anomalies. The complexity of the pathway and the potential changes resulting from downregulation of polyamine biosynthetic enzymes are highlighted in this study. Understanding the self-regulation of the pathway is crucial for better characterization and potential therapeutic interventions.

Summary: In this study, a lysosome-targeted fluorogenic probe called NA-HS was developed for real-time monitoring of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) fluctuation during autophagic fusion. The probe exhibited good selectivity and high sensitivity, allowing imaging of exogenous and endogenous H2S in living cells. Results showed that H2S levels were upregulated after autophagy initiation and gradually reduced during subsequent autophagic fusion, providing insights into cellular signal pathways.

Summary: This study found a non-linear association between serum spermidine (SPD) levels and cognitive performance, suggesting that a high SPD concentration may indicate a lower risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Monitoring SPD levels may help reduce the incidence of MCI and decrease the burden of MCI.
