Metal-free carbon electrocatalysts, such as heteroatom and defective doped carbons, are important for various reactions, including oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this issue of Chem, Yao and co-workers report a targeted synthesis approach to specific carbon defects, including adjacent carbon pentagons and divacancy defects attractive for ORR and HER, respectively.
