Background Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are common among dental professionals. The most common areas affected are the trunk, neck, shoulders and wrists. Current evidence suggests that the causes of MSD can be found in the physical demands of the profession. Posture and movement during treatment is influenced by the arrangement of the treatment concept (patient chair, equipment and cabinets). It has not been investigated whether the ergonomic risk differs between the treatment concepts. Methods To evaluate the prevalence of MSD in dental professionals, 1000 responses will be collected from a nationwide (Germany) online questionnaire (mod. Nordic Questionnaire and mod. Meyer questionnaire). In order to assess the ergonomic risk of the treatment techniques used in the four treatment concepts, 3D movement analyses are carried out with inertial sensors. For this purpose, 20 teams of dentists and dental assistants from four dental fields of specializations (generalists, orthodontists, endodontists and oral surgeons) and a student control group will be recruited. Each team will execute field specific standardized treatments at a dummy head. Measurements are carried out in each of the four treatment concepts. The data will be analyzed using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) which will be modified for the evaluation of objective data. Conclusions On the basis of these investigations, a substantial gain of knowledge regarding work-related MSD in the field of dentistry and its potential biomechanical causes is possible. For the first time, objective and differentiated comparisons between the four treatment concepts are possible for different fields of dental specialization. Up to now, statically held positions of the trunk and proximal upper extremities, but also the repetitive movements of the hands have been considered a risk for MSD. Since both are included in the RULA, dental activities can be assessed in a detailed but also global manner with regard to ergonomic risks.

Emergency care as a high-risk workplace-Measures to deal with violence against employees

Vanessa Beringer, Tanja Wirth, Lena Kazmierczak, Sonja Reissmann, Wilfried Schnieder, Hans-Werner Kottkamp, Greta Ullrich, Albert Nienhaus, Volker Harth, Anja Schablon, Stefanie Mache

Summary: This study investigated the measures for dealing with violence in emergency care and employees' subjective evaluations. The results showed that the availability of security staff and standardized reporting of incidents were considered important measures, but they were not consistently implemented. High workload in emergency care may impede the implementation of measures, and there is a clear demand for increased support from supervisors and hospital management.

I think we still do too little: measures to prevent violence and aggression in German emergency departments - a qualitative study

Sonja Reissmann, Tanja Wirth, Vanessa Beringer, David A. Groneberg, Albert Nienhaus, Volker Harth, Stefanie Mache

Summary: This study aims to explore the perceptions of ED staff on available violence prevention measures and their effectiveness. Participants reported the effectiveness of environmental, organisational, and individual-focused measures, but financial constraints were identified as the main barrier for implementation. To address this, reducing workload, developing tailored guidelines, and implementing screening tools are recommended. Hospitals should provide guidelines to ED staff, and prevention measures need to be practiced and communicated.

Music for the Heart-Can Heart Rate Be Influenced by Different Music Genres or Modulated Sounds? A Comparison between Healthy Young and Elderly People and Patients with Parkinson's Disease

Daniela Ohlendorf, Tobias Rader, Christian Maurer-Grubinger, Fee Keil, Eileen M. Wanke, Stefanie Uibel, Fabian Holzgreve, David A. Groneberg

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of different music genres, modulated noises and pink noise on heart rate, and to compare the effects among young healthy adults, elderly healthy adults, and patients with Parkinson's disease. The results showed that younger people have a higher variability in heart rate, indicating that they are more sensitive to the conditions studied. The findings suggest that listening to music does not have a systematic influence on decreasing or increasing heart rate.

Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders of Dance Teachers in Germany: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study

Mike Schmidt, Ruediger Reer, David A. Groneberg, Fabian Holzgreve, Eileen M. Wanke

Summary: The study aimed to investigate work-related musculoskeletal disorders among dance teachers in Germany. A survey was conducted with 229 dance teachers, revealing a 12-month prevalence rate of 60.7%. The most affected areas were the lumbar spine and ankle, and no significant differences were found based on dance styles and gender. These findings are important for developing prevention strategies and personalized interventions.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of different glove materials on inflammation and epidermal barrier impairment after experimental skin irritation. The results indicate that the semipermeable Sympatex material has better effects on skin parameters compared to other materials, suggesting that it can be a suitable material for glove liners or comfort gloves.

Daytime sleepiness among nursing staff A cross-sectional analysis of data from the Hamburg City Health Study (HCHS)

Peter Koch, Lukas Damerau, Jan Felix Kersten, Volker Harth, Matthias Augustin, Albert Nienhaus, Claudia Terschueren

Summary: Due to irregular working hours and additional family responsibilities, nursing staff may experience disturbances in their internal clock and have a higher risk of daytime sleepiness compared to other occupational groups who do not work in shifts. Female nurses are particularly at risk and have a statistically significant increased risk of excessive daytime sleepiness compared to men from other occupational sectors.

Summary: This study compared two measurement methods, RULA-PP and RULA-IMU, and found differences in risk scores in the arm and wrist analysis, while the differences were small in the neck, trunk, and leg analysis. The results indicated that RULA-IMU had higher discriminatory power and provided more accurate risk assessment for musculoskeletal diseases.

Orthodontists' instructions for oral hygiene in patients with removable and fixed orthodontic appliances

Christina Baumer, Irene Schmidtmann, Daniela Ohlendorf, Priscila Ferrari Peron, Heinrich Wehrbein, Christina Erbe

Summary: This questionnaire-based survey evaluated information on frequencies, instructions, and products related to oral hygiene in orthodontic practices in Germany. The results showed that electric toothbrushes were recommended for all appliances, with manual toothbrushes being favored for removable appliances. Additionally, the use of interdental brushes was strongly advised for vestibular multibracket appliances.

Albert Nienhaus, Johanna Stranzinger, Agnessa Kozak

Summary: From 2020 to 2022, the number of COVID-19-related occupational disease claims in Germany fluctuated, with a decreasing proportion of severe cases over the years. The vaccination campaign played a positive role in reducing the infection risk for healthcare workers, but infection prevention at the workplace remains crucial.

Orthodontic treatment in periodontally compromised patients: a systematic review

Christina Erbe, Sarah Heger, Adrian Kasaj, Manfred Berres, Heinrich Wehrbein

Summary: This systematic review examined the relationship between aggressive and chronic periodontitis and orthodontic treatment. The results showed that orthodontic treatment can improve function and esthetics in periodontally compromised patients, resulting in lower probing depths and clinical attachment gains. However, more high-quality studies are needed to obtain reliable and reproducible treatment results.
