Summary: Although plastic is widely used, the linear economy poses risks to human health. The circular plastic economy aims to reduce, reuse, and recycle all plastic across the value chain. Current literature focuses heavily on the end-of-life phase, neglecting other phases and highlighting challenges such as waste stream contamination and limitations on recycling and reusing plastic. Collaboration and systemic transparency are needed for a successful transition to a circular economy.

Summary: Packaging accounts for the largest demand in global plastic consumption, with around 60% used for food and beverage packaging. Our study quantified the food packaging generation from major supermarket and convenience store chains in Taipei, Taiwan, and found that 64.99% of the packaging was recycled. Identifying limitations in different stages and designing corresponding strategies is crucial to promote plastic food packaging recycling.

Summary: Banning single-use plastic bags is a popular policy intervention in developing countries like Nepal, but faces challenges in effectiveness and potential leakage to unregulated plastic bags. Research findings indicate that while the ban can reduce plastic bag usage in the short term, continuous monitoring and enforcement are necessary for long-term effectiveness.

Summary: This work proposes an optimal strategy for sorting and recycling plastic waste, aiming to maximize economic feasibility and minimize environmental pollution. A new optimization model is developed to determine the optimal sorting and recycling strategies, which calculates the overall profit by subtracting the recycling profit from the total annualized cost. The derived optimal strategy involves recycling different types of plastic waste into downgrade plastic, pyrolysis oil, and refuse plastic fuel. The results show a significant increase in overall profit compared to conventional cases in South Korea and Japan, with improvements of 3137% and 492% respectively.

Summary: This research evaluates the effectiveness of three proposed approaches to tackle the municipal solid waste problem in Hong Kong. It investigates the impact of citizens' environmental awareness on the effectiveness of waste management strategies and explores the variations in environmental awareness among different geographical constituencies. The study finds that there are differences in environmental awareness based on geographical location and gender, and proposes that MSW charging is effective while plastic shopping bag charging and recycling have limitations in the long term.

Summary: A complete and efficient process for the recovery and reuse of meta-aramid filter bag was proposed, which included pretreatment, dissolution recovery and reuse stages. The method successfully achieved 100% dissolution recovery of used meta-aramid material and resulted in high-quality meta-aramid films with good thermal stability, mechanical properties, flame retardancy and insulation properties. The process not only alleviated environmental pollution but also had great application prospects.

Summary: Asia is currently facing a serious crisis of plastic waste, mainly due to inadequate recycling infrastructure, unsustainable disposal practices, low recycling awareness, and the large amount of waste shipped from developed countries to the region. The ban on plastic waste import by China in 2017 worsened the situation, causing unsustainable shipping of waste from countries like Japan to alternate destinations in Southeast and East Asia. This research aims to compare the plastic recycling policies and legislations of Malaysia and Japan to find synergistic solutions to combat the current predicament.

Summary: Excessive waste, such as electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), is accumulating due to increased consumption. This study explores the polymer composition of WEEE and identifies acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) as the main polymer present. However, there is a significant proportion of unidentified polymers, and the presence of bromine is positively correlated with the unidentified WEEE polymer.

Summary: The energy optimization process at the wastewater treatment plant in Gubin, Poland, designed for 90,000 PE, involves the use of renewable energy sources such as solar, biogas, and geothermal. This results in surplus heat production in relation to demand and the ability to cover electricity needs, with the potential for selling excess electricity to the power grid.

Summary: Operating and research experiments have shown that thermal treatment of sewage sludge before methane fermentation can lead to several benefits, including increased biodegradability of substrates, improved dewaterability and hygienization of fermentate, reduced odour emission, higher biogas production, and improved energy balance. Various methods such as mechanical homogenization, microwaves, ultrasonic waves, chemical agents, thermal methods, and biological processes can be used for disintegration (liquefaction). This article reviews the literature on thermal hydrolysis research and highlights its positive effects on hydrolysis, biogas potential, and sludge degradation during anaerobic digestion.

Summary: This paper examines the composition and contaminants of household bio-waste in 8 communities in rural and urban areas of Poland. It finds that household bio-waste is mainly composed of food waste and garden waste, with a higher percentage of food waste. The level of contaminants is relatively high, especially in multi-family housing in urban areas. The research results provide valuable information for national and local governments, and contribute to achieving the EU's targets for managing bio-waste.

Summary: The aim of this paper is to discuss the literature concerning electrochemical wastewater treatment processes for organic micro-pollutant removal. Advanced oxidation processes and photochemical processes with or without catalysts are commonly used to degrade difficult-to-biochemically-degrade xenobiotics. The efficiency of these processes can be enhanced by the flow of electric current through the solution being purified. The paper also presents examples of the application of these processes for removing/degrading specific organic compounds from wastewater, such as pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, cosmetic ingredients, and other organic xenobiotics.

Summary: The progress of civilization leads to an increase in household waste, including the significant amount of bio-waste. Bio-waste is considered suitable for valorization through fermentation and biogas production. However, designing and optimizing facilities require precise data on the composition and properties of bio-waste, which is challenging due to seasonal variability and collection methods.
