Summary: This study evaluated the exposure of vaccines to suboptimal temperatures during transit from central storage to health centers in Laos. Findings showed that vaccines were exposed to temperatures above 8 degrees Celsius and below 0 degrees Celsius, with fluctuations in storage temperature. To prevent vaccine deterioration and disease outbreaks, the government should invest in technologies and approaches for consistent cold chain management.

Summary: This article provides a comprehensive analysis of critical metals resources in DPRK, revealing that previous estimates of its resource base were exaggerated. While there is a possibility of discovering new ore deposits, DPRK needs to develop a nationwide strategy to attract foreign investments for accessing its resources.

Summary: Period shaming refers to any negative and/or disrespectful behavior towards the menstrual cycle and menstruating girls. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with period shaming among male students in Luang Prabang Province, Lao PDR. The findings showed that 18.8% of male students admitted to having shamed girls during their menstruation, and factors such as alcohol consumption, awareness of menstruation, and attendance of sexual reproductive health activities/classes were significantly associated with period shaming behavior. The study suggests that comprehensive education on reproductive health, including respect and gender equality, should be integrated into the school curriculum to address menstrual stigma and support girls' menstrual health.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between hemoglobin (Hb) and osteoporosis (OP) in the Chinese elderly population. The results showed that Hb level was positively correlated with bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine, femur neck, and total hip. After adjusting for confounding variables, the relationship remained significant. Additionally, lower Hb levels were associated with a higher risk of OP.

Summary: Bone fractures are a global public health concern, but no comprehensive investigation on the use of low-dose aspirin to prevent fractures in the elderly has been conducted. This cross-sectional study found no significant association between the use of low-dose aspirin and fracture prevention in older adults. However, due to the higher incidence of fractures in the elderly, especially in women, it is important to implement more injury prevention initiatives and improve access to osteoporosis prevention and diagnosis to reduce the overall burden.

Summary: In the past decade, global surveillance has been conducted to monitor highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) infection. However, there have been limited studies on the epidemiology of avian influenza in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). From 2013 to 2014, outbreaks of HPAI H5N1 viruses were detected in domestic poultry in DPRK. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the viruses were introduced by migratory birds and then spread to neighboring chicken farms.

Summary: This study investigated the longitudinal changes in brain volume and cognitive function associated with diabetes at midlife, and found that type 2 diabetes is associated with greater white matter volume reduction and executive function decline. Long-term hyperglycemia was identified as a major independent factor associated with rapid cognitive decline in middle-aged adults with diabetes.

Summary: This study examined the effects of calcium supplementation with or without vitamin D on all-cause and cause-specific mortalities in a large cohort. The results showed that calcium supplementation alone did not affect all-cause mortality, but the combination of calcium and vitamin D reduced the risk of all-cause mortality, especially cardiovascular disease-associated mortality.

Summary: This study investigated the direct effects of metformin on glucose regulation in the brain by intracerebroventricular administration in mice. The results showed that central metformin improves glucose tolerance by delaying gastric emptying, but worsens it by increasing hepatic glucose production. These findings suggest a dual role of metformin in glucose regulation through the brain-gut and brain-liver axes.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the moderating effects of obesity, age, and sex on the association between sleep duration and the development of diabetes in Asians. The results showed that individuals who slept <= 5 hours/night had a higher risk of incident diabetes, and this risk was more pronounced in non-obese individuals, men, and those aged <60 years. On the other hand, obese individuals who slept >7 hours/night also had an increased risk of diabetes.

Summary: Sarcopenic obesity, caused by the rising older population, has become a global health concern, leading to cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality. Excessive adiposity creates a pro-inflammatory environment, disrupting metabolic homeostasis and impeding muscle tissue regeneration. The interaction between adipokines and myokines plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of sarcopenia and obesity, but its complexity makes it challenging to understand.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the defection process of North Korean refugees and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in South Korea. The findings suggest that the number of countries transited during the defection process and the duration of residence in South Korea are associated with the prevalence of MetS among the refugees.
