Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading applies second generation crime prevention through environmental design, which includes built environment interventions alongside social programmes and community participation initiatives in Khayelitsha, one of South Africa's poorest and most violent suburbs. We conducted a retrospective population-based study using survey data from 3625 geo-located households collected between 2013 and 2015 and mapped alcohol outlets to assess the association between the intervention and reported experience of violence. The analysis used generalised linear models to estimate and compare selfreported experience of violence adjusting for known confounders, which included area and household deprivation as well as alcohol outlet density. Living in close proximity to the upgraded urban infrastructure was associated with a 34% reduced exposure to interpersonal violence after adjusting for confounders. This association was consistent across age and gender. Access to additional social programmes alongside the urban upgrading intervention was not associated with further reduction in risk. The association between urban-upgrading and reduced exposure to interpersonal violence supports its inclusion among interventions in national and local crime prevention policies to address social and structural environments.

Vaccine hesitancy in migrant communities: a rapid review of latest evidence

Akhenaten Siankam Tankwanchi, Brett Bowman, Michelle Garrison, Heidi Larson, Charles Shey Wiysonge

Summary: Vaccine hesitancy is prevalent within immigrant communities due to fears and misinformation about vaccine harms, limited knowledge about preventable diseases and vaccines, distrust of host countries' health systems, language barriers, and perceived religious incompatibility with vaccine uptake. Measles, influenza, and human papillomavirus vaccines are most affected, with Somali and Polish migrants being the main populations involved.

Trends, Correlates, and Contexts of Robbery-Homicide in South Africa

Brett Bowman, Sherianne Kramer, Sulaiman Salau, Richard Matzopoulos

Summary: South Africa has a high homicide rate, but little is known about the contexts that lead to fatal violence. This study examined 68,801 reported robberies between 2003 and 2014 to identify risk factors for cases resulting in victim death. Robbery-homicide is rare in South Africa, and its risk factors differ from the overall homicide profile of the country. Significant correlates include the day of the week, time of the day, and the victim's race. These findings highlight the importance of context-sensitive understanding of violence in advancing homicide research in low- and middle-income countries.

Matching study using health and police datasets for characterising interpersonal violence in the community of Khayelitsha, South Africa 2013-2015

Summary: The Cardiff Model of data sharing for violence prevention suggests that the majority of violence-related injuries seen at health facilities are not reported to the police. A study in Cape Town found that the addition of non-reported cases of violence-related injuries from health facilities resulted in an 81.7% increase in potential total violent crimes. It was also discovered that non-reporting patients were more likely to be male and to have sharp object injuries, indicating a need for improved data-sharing between health services and law enforcement.

Summary: This study aims to describe non-fatal injuries among children aged 0-13 years in South Africa, and to identify significant differences in sex, age group, cause of injury, admission status, and injury severity. The results show that boys have higher proportions in all injury causes, and sexual assaults against girls are significantly more severe. The findings highlight the need for targeted prevention interventions for both boys and girls, particularly in the areas of burns, traffic accidents, and interpersonal violence.
