This study was conducted to compare soil particle density (rho (s)), soil total porosity (TP), liquid limit (LL), plastic limit (PL), and plasticity index, and their relations with soil organic matter (SOM), of non-carbonate silty clay Fluvisols under different land uses. Three neighboring land uses were studied: native deciduous forest, arable land, and meadow, managed in the same way for more than 100 years. Soil was collected from 27 soil profiles and from three depths (0-15, 15-30 and 30-45 cm). Land use caused statistically significant but different impacts on soil properties, particularly in the topsoil. The forest topsoil measured the lowest rho (s) and bulk density (rho (b)) but the highest SOM and soil water content at PL, compared to meadow and arable soil. Statistically significant linear relationship was observed with the SOM content and rho (s) (-0.851**), rho (b) (-0.567**), calculated TP (0.567**) and measured TP (-0.280**). There was a nonlinear relationship between SOM and LL (0.704**) and PL (0.845**) at the topsoil. The findings suggested that SOM content strongly affected rho (s), rho (b), TP, LL and LP. This regional study showed that the conversion of forestland into agricultural land without appropriate measures to conserve SOM leads to the degradation of physical and rheological soil properties.

Radon-222: environmental behavior and impact to (human and non-human) biota

Mirjana Cujic, Ljiljana Jankovic Mandic, Jelena Petrovic, Ranko Dragovic, Milan Dordevic, Mrdan Dokic, Snezana Dragovic

Summary: Radon-222 is an inert radioactive gas that can easily enter the atmosphere through emanation, migration, or exhalation. Its concentration varies during different seasons and climate conditions. Radon-222's short-lived daughters can serve as natural tracers in the atmosphere, but its radiation may have significant effects on living organisms, with epidemiological studies suggesting exposure to low and moderate concentrations of radon could induce lung cancer.

Challenges in coupling atmospheric electricity with biological systems

Ellard R. Hunting, James Matthews, Pablo Fernandez de Arroyabe Hernaez, Sam J. England, Konstantinos Kourtidis, Kuang Koh, Keri Nicoll, R. Giles Harrison, Konstantine Manser, Colin Price, Snezana Dragovic, Michal Cifra, Anna Odzimek, Daniel Robert

Summary: The atmosphere hosts a complex electric environment with interactions between organisms and their electrical environment previously studied in aquatic environments and now expanding to terrestrial environments. Research has shown coupling between large- and small-scale atmospheric electrical phenomena and biological processes, affecting various levels of biological organization. Challenges lie ahead in understanding the relationship between atmospheric electricity and the organization and functioning of biological systems.

Summary: There is a growing interest in studying the interactions between atmospheric electrical parameters and living organisms, with relatively few published studies focusing on the biological effects of atmospheric electric and magnetic fields. To foster future research in this multidisciplinary field, the authors present a glossary of relevant terms to facilitate learning and communication among different scientific disciplines working on this topic. The definitions provided aim to better reflect the existing and emerging scientific needs of this multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research area.

Toward the creation of an ontology for the coupling of atmospheric electricity with biological systems

Snezana Savoska, P. Fdez-Arroyabe, M. Cifra, K. Kourtidis, E. Rozanov, K. Nicoll, S. Dragovic, L. M. Mir

Summary: Atmospheric Electric Fields (AEFs) have influence on biological organisms and processes, particularly electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that have gained scientific attention. However, the lack of a semantic approach hinders comprehensive analysis of natural and artificial AEFs and EMFs data. Therefore, creating an ontology can promote data sharing and enhance data value.

Spatial distribution, radiological risk assessment and positive matrix factorization of gamma-emitting radionuclides in the sediment of the Boka Kotorska Bay

Milena Radomirovic, Slavka Stankovic, Milica Mandic, Mihajlo Jovic, Ljiljana Jankovic Mandic, Snezana Dragovic, Antonije Onjia

Summary: The study analyzed the content of technogenic cesium and naturally occurring radionuclides in surface sediment from the Boka Kotorska Bay, and found a correlation between the radionuclides and major elements in the samples. Primordial radioactivity was more pronounced in the inland of the bay, and a strong association between primordial radionuclides and most major elements was discovered. Positive matrix factorization identified sources of technogenic and natural radionuclides, with Si and Ca separated from other elements. The radiological hazard parameters indicated that the gamma radiation risk in the studied area is within acceptable levels.

Remote Sensing and Nuclear Techniques for Soil Erosion Research in Forest Areas: Case Study of the Crveni Potok Catchment

Milos Manic, Milan Dordevic, Mrdan Dokic, Ranko Dragovic, Dusan Kicovic, Dejan Dordevic, Mihajlo Jovic, Ivana Smiciklas, Snezana Dragovic

Summary: This study examines erosion processes and their impacts on forest management in the hilly terrains of the Crveni potok catchment in southeastern Serbia. The study identifies different erosion types and discusses the factors influencing erosion, such as soil density, slope, rainfall, and vegetation characteristics. Various remote sensing and geospatial techniques are used to assess erosion factors, and conversion models are used to estimate soil erosion rates. The study provides valuable insights into prioritizing soil conservation and implementing site-specific remediation measures for sustainable forest management.

Snezana Dragovic

Summary: This study provides an overview of the use of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in environmental radioactivity research, focusing on identification and quantification of radionuclides, migration prediction, distribution mapping, measurement methodology optimization, process monitoring, and real-time data analysis. The performance of ANNs is evaluated, and key factors in model optimization are identified. Strategies and methods for improving ANN performance are analyzed, and future research directions are proposed.

Summary: This research evaluates the impact of long-term land use conversion on the hydraulic properties of fine-textured soils in lowland agroecosystems. The results indicate significant changes in various hydraulic properties, as well as soil physical quality, after the conversion of native forests into agricultural land. The findings suggest that such changes could potentially have adverse effects on crop yield and the environment.

Summary: Despite the practical approach for characterizing the environmental risk of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) from steel production, the analysis of bioavailable PTEs concentrations in soil is often overlooked in managing polluted sites. This study investigated the DTPA-extractable forms of PTEs in soils near a major Serbian steel production plant, revealing significant variability and suggesting an anthropogenic origin. Self-organizing maps (SOMs), principal component analysis (PCA), and positive matrix factorization (PMF) further confirmed the common origin and provided a basis for comprehensive assessment and soil remediation.

Mrdan Dokic, Milos Manic, Milan Dordevic, Milena Gocic, Aleksandar Cupic, Mihajlo Jovic, Ranko Dragovic, Bosko Gajic, Ivana Smiciklas, Snezana Dragovic

Summary: Gully erosion poses numerous environmental risks, including soil loss, flooding, and water pollution, while also negatively impacting the productivity and viability of agricultural land and natural ecosystems. This study presents a methodology that combines remote sensing and nuclear techniques to investigate gully erosion. The use of 360-degree camera photogrammetry allows for detailed morphometric analysis of gullies, providing insights into erosion processes, erosion intensity variations, and effective monitoring methods. The results highlight the importance of micro-relief data obtained through photogrammetric modeling for erosion research and demonstrate the reliability of 360-degree camera photogrammetry in analyzing gully morphology and monitoring changes in gully systems.
