Summary: Despite the widespread belief in contemporary cognitive science that approaches eschewing representation are limited in explanatory scope, there is still no compelling reason to assume that non-representationalist theories are inherently limited. The influential argument regarding 'representation-hungry' cognition by Clark and Toribio is flawed due to inconsistent notion of representation and conflation of explanandum with explanans. The appeal of the argument from representation-hunger seems to stem primarily from the unscientific principle of like causes like upon closer inspection.

Summary: The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic has psychological effects on pregnant women, particularly in terms of depression, phobic anxiety, and perceived stress. Insomnia and recent loss of a loved one are important factors affecting depression, while fear of COVID-19 infection leads to an increase in phobic anxiety.

Summary: Chronic endometritis is an infectious or inflammatory process that disrupts the correct implantation of embryos. Its prevalence ranges from 2% to almost 60%, with a higher suspicion in women with recurrent early pregnancy loss and recurrent implantation failure. The impact of chronic endometritis on reproductive outcomes following IVF is uncertain due to the lack of convincing data showing improvement after diagnosis and treatment. This article critically evaluates current diagnostic methods, treatments, and patient populations for chronic endometritis.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health, type of delivery, and neonatal feeding of pregnant women with or without SARS-CoV-2 infection. The survey results showed that pregnant women with SARS-CoV-2 infection had a higher probability of being separated from the newborn and a lower probability of breastfeeding. Additionally, these women were more likely to experience symptoms suggestive of postnatal depression.

Summary: During the quarantine period of 50 days, all women showed a gradual increase in psychopathological indicators and a decrease in positive affect, with pregnant women exhibiting a more pronounced increase in depression, anxiety, and negative affect than non-pregnant women did. Additionally, pregnant women experienced a more pronounced decrease in positive affect compared to non-pregnant women.

Summary: Fungal neglected tropical diseases (FNTDs) such as mycetoma, chromoblastomycosis, and paracoccidioidomycosis have a similar geographical distribution to diseases like tuberculosis and malaria, but receive less attention. AIDS-related mycoses are also highlighted, with inadequate funding being a challenge despite advancements in antiretroviral therapy.

Summary: The use of animal-derived medical products on patients without their informed consent undermines respect for autonomy and may cause psychological harm. It is morally inconsistent to respect patients' dietary preferences and then use animal-derived medicines or medical devices without their informed consent. Addressing this ethical blind spot by consistently applying the principles of respect for autonomy and informed consent is necessary.

Summary: Indices of morphological and molecular disparity are used to summarize variation within species groups, and the former is more influenced by subjective character selection. Molecular disparity is found to be less influenced by sampling biases and can be obtained in a more objective and automated manner than morphological data. Comparisons between morphological and molecular disparity can provide a fuller picture of subclade evolution.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of an online mentalization-based prenatal group program, STEP-COVID, on psychological distress in pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed a significant decrease in distress and post-traumatic symptoms, and an increase in positive affectivity in the intervention group, compared to the control group where only post-traumatic symptoms improved. Women in the intervention group also reported greater changes in resilience-promoting factors during pregnancy. These findings suggest that brief online interventions like STEP-COVID can help mitigate the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of pregnant women.

Summary: This study examines risk factors for anxiety and depression among pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results indicate that pregnant women in high-income economies experience higher levels of anxiety and depression. Factors such as the need for psychiatric treatment before pregnancy, restrictions in social distancing and access to leisure activities, pregnancy-related complications, fear of adverse outcomes in children related to COVID-19, and financial burden are associated with increased risk of anxiety and depression during pregnancy.

Summary: This study assessed the anxiety and depression levels of pregnant women in Hong Kong during the COVID-19 pandemic and examined the influence of demographic, economic, and social factors on these levels. The findings showed that pregnant women with psychiatric illness had higher scores in anxiety and depression. Factors such as financial difficulty, education, and in-vitro fertilization were associated with higher levels of depression, while partner support was associated with reduced levels of depression and anxiety. Therefore, addressing the needs of pregnant women with psychiatric illness and providing partner support are crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: Despite heterogeneity in study design and quality, a sequential, prospective meta-analysis found that SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy increases the risk of maternal mortality, severe maternal morbidity, and neonatal morbidity. However, there is no association with stillbirth or intrauterine growth restriction. The findings highlight the importance of preventing and managing SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant women. Overall, the study is rated 8 out of 10 in terms of importance.

Summary: This systematic review collected evidence on preeclampsia occurring before the 20th week of gestation and investigated the role of PLGF and sFlt-1 in its development. In the analyzed cases, all pregnancies with preeclampsia before the 20th week resulted in intrauterine fetal demise, and elevated SFlt-1/PLGF ratios were observed in all women. The review identified 37 reported cases worldwide, emphasizing the need for further research to establish revised definitions or new ones for this very early onset preeclampsia, which is rare but possible.

Summary: Selenium and manganese are essential micronutrients that play important roles in cell metabolism. They are involved in enzyme systems and regulate enzyme activity. Disturbances in their homeostasis can lead to diseases and carcinogenesis due to increased oxidative stress and impaired antioxidant properties. Selenium maintains immune-endocrine, metabolic, and cellular homeostasis, while manganese is important in development, digestion, reproduction, antioxidant defense, energy production, immune response, and regulation of neuronal activity. This review highlights their roles in tumor growth, metastasis, and microenvironment remodeling, and their potential as biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment of reproductive organ cancer.

Summary: Recent studies have found that COVID-19 infection can cause disruptions in the maternal-fetal interface, potentially leading to pregnancy complications. By analyzing transcriptomic and epigenomic data from COVID-19 patients and control samples, researchers discovered abnormal immune activation and angiogenesis patterns in specific cells, as well as dysregulation of retrotransposons. In particular, they found that reduced enhancer activities of LTR8B elements were linked to downregulation of pregnancy-specific glycoprotein genes in syncytiotrophoblasts.

Summary: This meta-analysis confirmed that platelet count was significantly lower in preeclamptic women, irrespective of severity and presence or absence of associated complications, even before the onset of preeclampsia and in the second trimester of pregnancy. Our findings suggest that platelet count may be a potential marker to identify and predict preeclampsia.
