Most of the world's crops depend on pollinators, so declines in both managed and wild bees raise concerns about food security. However, the degree to which insect pollination is actually limiting current crop production is poorly understood, as is the role of wild species (as opposed to managed honeybees) in pollinating crops, particularly in intensive production areas. We established a nationwide study to assess the extent of pollinator limitation in seven crops at 131 locations situated across major crop-producing areas of the USA. We found that five out of seven crops showed evidence of pollinator limitation. Wild bees and honeybees provided comparable amounts of pollination for most crops, even in agriculturally intensive regions. We estimated the nationwide annual production value of wild pollinators to the seven crops we studied at over $1.5 billion; the value of wild bee pollination of all pollinator-dependent crops would be much greater. Our findings show that pollinator declines could translate directly into decreased yields or production for most of the crops studied, and that wild species contribute substantially to pollination of most study crops in major crop-producing regions.

Comparison of microscopy and metabarcoding to identify pollen used by the critically endangered rusty patched bumble bee, Bombus affinis

Summary: Taxonomic analysis of pollen collected by bees can provide insights into their host plant use. Morphological analysis and molecular analysis are two main identification approaches used. In this study, both methods were used to analyse pollen collected by the endangered rusty patched bumble bee species. DNA metabarcoding detected more plant taxa than light microscopy, and DNA barcoding had higher taxonomic resolution. However, there were still differences between the two methods, highlighting the importance of binning taxonomic results.

Western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) attraction to commercial pollen substitutes and wildflower pollen in vitro

Summary: Many beekeepers provide artificial pollen substitutes to their honey bee colonies when natural pollen is limited or of poor quality. In a choice-test, caged worker bees showed a preference for consuming wildflower pollen over commercially available pollen substitutes. Evaluating the Efficacy of Common Treatments Used for Vairimorpha (Nosema) spp. Control

Association of excessive precipitation and agricultural land use with honey bee colony performance

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between weather, landscape characteristics, and honey bee colony outcomes. Detailed measurements on over 450 honey bee colonies in Michigan, USA revealed that higher than normal precipitation in the preceding spring and fall was negatively correlated with colony size change and with foraged nectar mass. Sites surrounded by less agricultural land and more forested land also had fewer pupae by the end of summer.

This study showed a strong relationship between flea beetle densities in the previous season and crop feeding injury in spring oilseed rape. Wildflower plantings have mixed effects on insect herbivores and their natural enemies

Summary: Flower strips are effective in promoting beneficial insects and their services to adjacent crops. However, they have been developed separately for pollinators and natural enemies, with little consideration for insect herbivores. A study in California showed that control field borders had more herbivores, such as aphids and hoppers, while wildflower plantings had more lace bugs and Lygus bugs. Predators, including big-eyed bugs and lady beetles, were more common in control field borders, while spiders were more common in wildflower plantings. Parasitoid wasps were more common in wildflower plantings and adjacent crop fields. Overall, wildflower plantings have a taxon-specific impact on insect herbivores and natural enemies, which can have positive or negative effects on pest control.

Partitioning pollination services to faba bean (Vicia faba L.) between managed honeybees and wild bees

Summary: This study investigates the contribution of honeybees and wild bees to the pollination of faba bean in Sweden. The results show that honeybees contribute the most (47%), followed by short-tongued bumblebees (40%), long-tongued bumblebees (6%), and solitary bees (8%). Identity and diversity of pollens collected by two managed bee species while in blueberry fields for pollination

Summary: During blueberry pollination, managed bees collect pollen from flowers other than blueberries. Bumble bees collect a wider diversity of pollens compared to honey bees, but honey bees are more focused on abundant resources. Blueberries were not the most collected pollen in 2018, but they were in 2019, especially for bumble bees. Other common pollen sources include buckthorn, willow, cherry, brambles, white clover, and oak.

Systemic insecticides for control of stem gall wasp in highbush blueberry

Postharvest control of spotted-wing drosophila and blueberry maggot by low temperature conditions and fumigation with sulfur dioxide

Summary: Cold treatment and fumigation are commonly used methods for post-harvest disinfection of fruits, nuts, grains, and vegetables. In this study, it was found that a temperature of 0.5°C for at least 21 days can effectively control the population of blueberry maggots in harvested blueberries, while fumigation with SO2 at a certain concentration has a low effectiveness and negative impact on fruit quality. Therefore, a combination of fumigation and cold storage is an effective method for pest control without compromising fruit quality.
