Summary: Food safety beliefs that are not based on science can have negative consequences, as highlighted by this study on gastroenteritis. The research found that a significant portion of the population believes in food safety myths, with some even reporting them as facts, and these beliefs are positively correlated with the incidences and prevalence of gastroenteritis. Notably, unscientific beliefs about eggs, bacteria inactivation, vegetarianism, and eating dirt and diarrhea were found to have the strongest correlations.

Summary: Despite the equitable healthcare system in Germany, significant associations were found between overall survival of oral cavity cancer and different socioeconomic factors. Sex, age at diagnosis, Charlson score, number of positive lymph nodes, and nodal status were identified as independent predictors for overall survival in oral cavity cancer patients.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the cumulative incidence of postcolonoscopy colorectal cancer (PCCRC) in Germany according to the physician's polyp detection rate (PDR). The study found a substantially increased PCCRC risk in persons examined by physicians with a low PDR, regardless of the baseline findings. This highlights the importance of high-quality colonoscopy in preventing colorectal cancer incidence.

Summary: A study from the Breast Cancer Health Database in Taiwan showed that the occurrence of second primary malignancies (SPMs) after breast cancer (BC) is an important issue. However, the study found that the use of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy did not increase the risk of SPM in women with BC. In fact, for patients at stage III/IV, receiving both therapies was associated with a lower risk of SPM.

Summary: The regional 'Be Clear on Cancer' campaign by Public Health England aimed to raise public awareness of key abdominal cancer symptoms in people aged 50 and over. The campaign led to significantly higher awareness of the campaign in the region, improved knowledge of symptoms like bloating, increased GP attendances for abdominal symptoms, and more diagnoses of specific abdominal cancers in the campaign area compared to the control area.

Summary: Oral microbial dysbiosis is linked with the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). This study analyzed the microbial communities in the oral cavity at different stages of oral carcinogenesis and found several specific bacteria and fungi species associated with OSCC. The differences in OSCC-associated diversity, species distinction, and functional alterations were most prominent in mucosal samples.

Summary: The study provides a detailed overview of epidemiologic measures for lip, oral cavity, and pharynx cancers in Germany, showing significant differences in incidence, mortality, and survival rates among different tumor entities. The data reveals marked variations in survival rates, age of diagnosis, and stage distributions across different entities. Despite an increase in age at diagnosis, particularly in male patients, the five-year relative survival rates have also improved over the years.
