Background: The aim of the study was to assess the number and anatomical classification of roots and root canals of first and second mandibular molars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in a Chilean population. Materials and methods: This study evaluated the CBCT scans of 289 patients aged between 14 and 86 years, obtaining a sample of 1022 mandibular first and second molars. The number of roots and root canals was evaluated according to the anatomical classification proposed by Ahmed in 2016. Data were analysed using Pearson's chi-squared test and ANOVA. Results: Nine hundred fifty-one (93.05%) molars had two roots, while the remaining 71 (6.95%) molars had one root. The most frequent root and root canal morphologies found were: (MM)-M-2 M-2 D-1 (29.65%), (MM)-M-2 M2-1 D-1 (22.3%) and (MM)-M-2 M-1 D-1 (13.4%) (M - mesial, D - distal), with a total of 32 different anatomical distributions. C-shaped canals were present in 56 molars and were more frequently found in women than in men (7.1% vs. 3.88%; p = 0.024). Conclusions: The analysis of internal anatomy using CBCT revealed a highly variable distribution of root canals. The most frequent morphology found in mandibular molars in a Chilean population was two roots and three canals.

Effects of melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) antagonist on neuropathic pain hypersensitivity in rats - A systematic review and meta-analysis

Olga A. Korczeniewska, Divya Kohli, Giannina Katzmann Rider, Carlos Zaror, Veronica Iturriaga, Rafael Benoliel

Summary: Melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) antagonists have been found to effectively alleviate hypersensitivity in rodent neuropathic pain models, with SHU9119 and HS014 antagonists showing the most prominent results. Further investigation is needed to determine the optimal dose and time of treatment.

Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Changes in Patients with Dentofacial Deformities Class II and III after Orthognathic Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Valentina Duarte, Carlos Zaror, Julio Villanueva, Matias Andreo, Matias Dallaserra, Josefina Salazar, Angels Pont, Montse Ferrer

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of combined orthodontic-surgical treatment on oral health-related quality of life for patients with different types of dentofacial deformities. The results showed significant improvement in oral health-related quality of life for both Class II and Class III patients 4-7 months after surgery. However, Class II patients had lower improvement in certain domains compared to Class III patients.

Which physical therapy intervention is most effective in reducing secondary lymphoedema associated with breast cancer? Protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis

Raul Alberto Aguilera-Eguia, Pamela Seron, Ruvistay Gutierrez-Arias, Carlos Zaror

Summary: Lymphoedema associated with breast cancer is a common condition caused by lymphatic system interruption and various factors. Physical therapy is an effective treatment for reducing lymphoedema, improving quality of life, and reducing pain. However, there is currently no study comparing the effectiveness of all physical therapy interventions. The purpose of this study is to determine the most effective physical therapy treatment.

Diagnosis and Treatment in Unilateral Condylar Hyperplasia

Jorge Beltran, Carlos Zaror, Maria Paz Moya, Henrique Duque Netto, Sergio Olate

Summary: This research analyzed the diagnosis and treatment of patients with unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH). The study found that variables such as age, sex, clinical type, SPECT intensity, and the need for secondary surgery were associated with the diagnosis of UCH. The authors recommend using clinical analysis, medical records, 3D imaging, and SPECT as complementary tools for assessing UCH and progressive facial asymmetry.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of different physical exercise programmes in reducing the volume of lymphoedema, pain intensity, and improving quality of life in breast cancer-related lymphoedema patients. The researchers will collect data by searching databases and assess the overall quality of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation System. The results will be published in peer-reviewed journals and disseminated in scientific conferences.

Antimicrobial Activity of Selenium Nanoparticles (SeNPs) against Potentially Pathogenic Oral Microorganisms: A Scoping Review

Eulalia Sans-Serramitjana, Macarena Obreque, Fernanda Munoz, Carlos Zaror, Maria de La Luz Mora, Miguel Vinas, Pablo Betancourt

Summary: This scoping review examines the potential role of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) in combating oral pathogens. The findings suggest that SeNPs have significant antimicrobial efficacy against common oral pathogens, along with effective antioxidant activity and limited toxicity. Further research is needed to evaluate their effectiveness in different settings and to provide detailed information on experimental conditions and safety.
