The present study aims at evaluating potential genotoxic and cytotoxic effects caused by the occupational exposure of farmers to pesticide mixtures in the Aitoloakarnania Prefecture (Greece). The aforementioned assessment was conducted through in vivo Cytokinesis Block Micronucleus assay (CBMN assay) in peripheral blood lymphocytes, in relation to chemical analysis of pesticide residues in blood samples. The exposure of the farmers' population studied to different combinations of pesticides induced significant differences in the frequencies of micronuclei (MN) compared to those of the control group. Furthermore, our results indicated a possible clastogenic and aneugenic effect of pesticides on the genetic material of the farmers exposed. Five pesticides (trifluralin, chlorpyriphos methyl, metolachlor, fenthion and dimethoate) and three metabolites (fenthion sulfone, fenthion sulfoxide and 4,4' DDE) were detected in the 62.5% of blood samples, with mean concentrations ranging from 0.4 ng/ml to 48 ng/ml. Since the farmers studied probably exhibit detectable levels of systematic exposure to the pesticides applied, continuous educational programs focused on the rational and safe use of pesticides, together with implementation of risk communication strategies among farmers are highly recommended.

Ioanna Efthimiou, Georgios Kalamaras, Katerina Papavasileiou, Natalia Anastasi-Papathanasi, Yiannis Georgiou, Stefanos Dailianis, Yiannis Deligiannakis, Dimitris Vlastos

Summary: The study investigated the cytotoxic and oxidative effects of custom-made nanoparticles on hemocytes of Mytilus galloprovincialis using hemolymph serum as exposure medium. Results showed that Ag NPs were more cytotoxic than ZnO-Ag NPs and/or ZnO NPs, with high levels of superoxide anion and malondialdehyde detected in cells treated with Ag NPs. Further studies are needed to understand the oxidative mode of action of NP metal ions in complex NP mixtures.

Spatiotemporal variation in urban overheating magnitude and its association with synoptic air-masses in a coastal city

Hassan Saeed Khan, Mat Santamouris, Pavlos Kassomenos, Riccardo Paolini, Peter Caccetta, Ilias Petrou

Summary: The research in Sydney found that synoptic-scale weather conditions impact the magnitude of urban overheating, with daytime UO exacerbating over time and nighttime UO alleviating. Humid warm (HW) and warm (W) air masses primarily exacerbate daytime UO during extreme heat events and all other seasons, while dry warm (DW) and W conditions mainly contribute to urban cooling (UC) at nighttime. These findings suggest that appropriate mitigation technologies can be planned to alleviate higher daytime temperatures in Sydney suburbs.

Maria Antonopoulou, Dimitris Vlastos, Margarita Dormousoglou, Spyridon Bouras, Maria Varela-Athanasatou, Irene-Eleni Bekakou

Summary: Tris(chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) is a widely used organophosphorus flame retardant that may pose potential risks to human health and the environment. Studies on organisms from different trophic levels, including bacteria, green microalgae, and human cells, have demonstrated TCPP's toxic and genotoxic effects. TCPP has been shown to induce genotoxic effects in cultured human lymphocytes and adversely affect freshwater and marine microalgae species. Further research is needed to investigate the individual and combined effects of TCPP with other organophosphorus flame retardants in various organisms, and measures should be taken to control the introduction of TCPP into the environment.

Summary: The selection of predictor variables is crucial in building a digital mapping model for potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soil. Traditionally, spatial and spectral parameters have been used as predictor variables, but the temporal dimension is often overlooked. This study demonstrates the value of incorporating temporal indices in the model, leading to significant performance improvements. The temporal-spatial-spectral covariate combinations used in a random forest (RF) algorithm achieve satisfactory mapping accuracy and outperform other methods.
