Summary: This study numerically investigates two principal thermal enhancement techniques, finned tubes and conductive metal foams, in a phase change energy storage system. The simulation predictions are validated by experimental results with topology optimized fins. The results show that compared to the configuration without enhancement, the thermal energy storage rates can be increased by 3.3-5.8 times using these thermal enhancement techniques. It is found that topology optimized fins achieve the best performance, but their economic efficiency is dependent on the unit price ratio.

Summary: Currently, protective clothing used in clinical field helps reduce radiation exposure, but lead in it can cause lead poisoning. Therefore, researchers are developing lead-free radiation shielding materials. Experimental results show that a shielding material made of tungsten filament has a higher shielding rate than existing tools, indicating its potential to replace lead as the most effective protective material in the clinical field.

Summary: The present study examined the fatigue life behavior of functionally graded additive manufacturing (FGAM) parts fabricated using Material Extrusion (MEX). It reveals the potential of FGMs for designing and improving the mechanical behavior of fabricated structures. A blend of polylactic acid (PLA) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) are used as raw materials for experimentation. From the analysis, a set of optimal parameters is determined for the FGAM specimens, leading to superior performance in any working environment. This study is novel in investigating the fatigue behavior of FGAM structures, which has never been attempted before.

Summary: Open Process Automation and Digital Twin technologies have great potential in manufacturing systems to reduce risk, downtime, and energy consumption, and improve efficiency and safety. However, there are challenges in adopting these technologies, such as interoperability, data access, and equipment access. This paper demonstrates and evaluates a Digital Twin framework solution for performance monitoring in process manufacturing systems to avoid unplanned downtime.

Summary: Minimum environmental impact and improved resource efficiency can be achieved by reusing nutrient solution drained from a primary crop to irrigate a secondary crop in soilless cascade systems. The study found that the nutrient solution from the primary crop can meet the needs of the secondary crop without compromising its productivity, and also improve water and nutrient use efficiency.

Summary: X-ray computed to-mography (XCT) has the potential for surface characterisation in polymeric additive manufacturing (AM). This study presents the use of XCT to analyse different polymeric AM surfaces, comparing roughness parameters with reference measurements. The results demonstrate that XCT can be used for roughness evaluation in polymeric AM, with different suitable parameters depending on the technology.

Summary: Matrix production, as a response to low utilization of production lines, offers various ways to react to disturbances and balance utilization, but also increases scheduling complexity exponentially. This paper introduces a multi-objective scheduling approach based on Monte-Carlo Tree Search to improve solution quality and execution time in real-time scheduling scenarios.
