Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in patients with diabetic foot infection was significantly higher compared to 2019, with more patients admitted due to recent or current antibiotic therapy. Various factors such as previous hospitalization, self-administration of antibiotics, and antibiotic prescription by general practitioners were identified as independent predictors of antibiotic resistance.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for the care of diabetic foot worldwide, especially with the difficulties of telemedicine for hands-on treatment. By addressing the challenges through the COVID-19 experience, our approach to managing diabetic foot disease might be transformed, particularly in the areas of digital health and smart technology.

Summary: This study evaluated changes in care delivery for diabetic foot ulcer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ratio of major to minor lower extremity amputations decreased after implementing novel strategies to combat access restrictions. Strategic planning and rapid implementation of diabetic foot ulcer triage resulted in accessible care and a reduction in amputations during the pandemic.

Summary: In this study, 138 emergency department healthcare providers were tested for exposure to COVID-19, with a 5% seroconversion rate one month after the first wave of the pandemic. There were no significant differences in demographic/ethnic variables, medical history, hours worked, PPE use, or exposures between seropositive and seronegative individuals.

Summary: Italy was the first European country to face the COVID-19 pandemic, and this study evaluated the effects of COVID-19 on an orthopedic emergency department. The results showed a decrease in ED admissions, but an increase in more severe triage codes and diagnosed fractures during the pandemic.

Summary: This study investigated the predictors of foot ulcers among Egyptian diabetic patients, revealing that having three or more comorbidities, two or more diabetic complications, callus, and flatfoot are significant positive predictors of DFUs, while managing diabetes through diet, oral hypoglycemic drugs, and insulin, as well as intact vibration sense, were found to be protective predictors against DFUs. Close monitoring of diabetic patients with comorbidities and complications is recommended to reduce the risk of DFUs.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric emergency cases in a tertiary-level children's hospital in Italy. The results showed no significant changes in the number and proportion of pediatric emergency cases during the pandemic, but there was a significant decrease in the proportion of emergency cases related to respiratory diseases.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, there was a significant decrease in surgical volume compared to the previous year, leading to changes in the types of procedures performed and a decrease in the age of both surgeons and patients. Broad preoperative screening resulted in only 1 positive COVID-19 test in an asymptomatic patient.

Summary: The outbreak of COVID-19 had significant impacts on the treatment and management of patients with chronic diabetes. This study examined the short-term effects of the pandemic on patients with chronic diabetes who suffered from contaminated diabetic ulcers. The results did not show a clear worsening trend in the condition of patients during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Summary: According to the results of network meta-analysis, GLP-1RA and SGLT-2 inhibitors are superior to DPP-4 inhibitors in reducing the risk of cardiorenal outcomes. Compared with DPP-4 inhibitors, SGLT-2 inhibitors have a more significant effect in reducing cardiovascular and overall mortality, while GLP-1RA only reduces overall mortality. There is no significant difference between GLP-1RA and SGLT-2 inhibitors in the risks of MACE, nonfatal MI, nonfatal stroke, cardiovascular, and overall mortality. SGLT-2 inhibitors are superior to GLP-1RA in reducing the risk of hospitalization for heart failure and renal outcomes. Only GLP-1RA can reduce the risk of nonfatal stroke.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate PTH levels in individuals with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) and investigate the relationship between PTH levels and osteomyelitis (OM) in this population. The results showed that PTH levels were lower in DFU patients with OM compared to those without OM, and alkaline phosphatase levels were higher in the OM group. OM and alkaline phosphatase levels were independent predictors of PTH levels in this selected population.

Summary: This review discusses the neuroimmune endocrinological aspects of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The virus targets the central nervous system, affecting the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and potentially causing autoimmune processes and satellite gland disorders. However, further research is needed to understand the short- and long-term effects on the endocrine system.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate cognitive function in type 2 diabetes patients treated with GLP-1RA plus metformin compared to metformin alone, and its association with endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). The results showed that patients in the GLP-1RA + MET group had better cognitive function and higher levels of circulating EPCs compared to the MET group. Further studies are needed to understand the relationship between EPCs, GLP-1RA treatment, and cognitive health.

Summary: Neurodegeneration is a complex process involving multiple mechanisms, with diseases like Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's, prion diseases, and ALS being examples. Iron overload has been identified as a potential cause of neurodegeneration, with dysregulated iron metabolism and increased oxidative stress being common in these diseases. Alzheimer's, in particular, shows increased iron content in vulnerable brain regions, leading to mitochondrial alterations and lack of antioxidant defenses. Iron metabolism and ferroptosis play a significant role in diabetes-induced cognitive decline, and iron chelators offer a promising therapeutic approach.
