Summary: Patients with ESRD are at risk of malnutrition and high mortality. The study found an association between unplanned hemodialysis and low GNRI scores with mortality risk.

Summary: The study retrospectively reports on RAI treatment in thyroid cancer patients with ESRD undergoing dialysis, highlighting the challenges posed by delayed biological clearance of RAI. Adjusted dose activity and balancing scheduling between RAI therapy and dialysis are recommended to ensure closer radiation exposure in ESRD patients. Pooling data from multiple centers is suggested to establish consensus and substantiated recommendations for RAI treatment in ESRD patients.

Summary: End stage renal disease (ESRD) has detrimental effects on the immune system, leading to quantitative alterations of lymphocyte subpopulations. Using principal component analysis (PCA) and uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP), we found that ESRD patients have a more senescent immune phenotype, and dialysis prescription may play a role in determining the immunological groups within the patient cohort.

Summary: Receiving treatment for secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) was associated with a lower risk of incident dementia among older patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The beneficial effect of SHPT treatment differed by sex and race, with females and those of Asian or Black race experiencing the greatest reduction in dementia risk.

Summary: As the population ages, frailty becomes a critical issue in the health of older adults, including those with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Frailty is common in CKD patients and is associated with various adverse outcomes. Further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of interventions for reducing frailty in improving health outcomes in CKD patients.

Summary: The study showed poor agreement between objective and subjective measures of frailty and physical function. Objective measures were associated with mortality, while subjective measures were associated with dialysis modality choice.

Summary: Experienced End-Stage Renal Disease Seamless Care Organizations (ESCOs) performed better under the Comprehensive End-Stage Renal Disease Care (CEC) Initiative, while ESCOs located in more affluent areas and smaller ESCOs also showed better performance. The number of dialysis facilities and years of experience in the CEC Initiative were also associated with ESCOs' performance.

Summary: In Australia, the proportion of early mortality due to dialysis withdrawal has remained stable since 2005, with medical withdrawals consistently accounting for a higher annual proportion than psychosocial withdrawals. Risk factors associated with early mortality from psychosocial and medical withdrawals were found to be similar.

Summary: Frailty is common in individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with adverse outcomes, including mortality and risk of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Preventative interventions should be initiated to mitigate the development of frailty. The use of a simple frailty index, generated electronically from health records, can predict outcomes and may aid prioritization for management of people with frailty.

Summary: Evaluating existing risk model scores predicting end stage renal disease (ESRD) in a cohort of octogenarian patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) showed poor performance, highlighting the necessity for developing new tools for this population.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate variations in mortality and hospitalization cases among ESRD patients receiving HD care in 13 SMAs of Fukuoka prefecture. Significant differences in hospitalization risks and increased mortality risks due to heart failure and malignancy in different SMAs were identified. Variations in hospital length of stay, total hospitalization cost, and cost per day according to SMAs were also statistically significant.

Summary: Malnutrition is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease in patients with CKD. The Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) has been proven to be a simple and effective nutritional screening measure with important implications for predicting mortality rates in CKD patients.

Summary: Iron deficiency is common in individuals with chronic kidney disease and can lead to the development of anemia. Oral iron agents may not be effective, and consideration should be given to using intravenous formulations. Recent studies suggest that more aggressive repletion of iron may provide benefits for anemia management and severe clinical outcomes such as cardiovascular disease.
