Summary: This review discusses the mechanisms and treatment of canine otitis externa (OE). Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a pathogen frequently isolated from chronic OE cases, poses challenges due to its biological characteristics and antibiotic resistance. Alternative treatments, such as bacteriophages, are explored. Further research is needed in understanding the role of other virulence factors in OE.

Summary: Malignant otitis externa is an infection affecting the external auditory canal and skull base, most commonly caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in diabetic, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Clinical manifestations include persistent ear pain, chronic otorrhea, and facial nerve palsy. Diagnosis involves CT scan and Technetium-99m, while treatment requires individualized approach and strict diabetes control, with surgical management recommended for refractory cases.

Summary: An 88-year-old man presented with delirium, followed by hoarseness and oropharyngeal dysphagia due to skull-based osteomyelitis from necrotizing otitis externa (NOE). Despite the absence of typical symptoms, high suspicion for NOE and its complications is necessary in patients presenting with otolaryngeal symptoms.

Summary: Referrals for otitis externa (OE) have significantly increased, but the reasons for this remain unclear. A study found that patients often consult primary care several times before referral. Additionally, many patients do not follow the recommended use of appropriate ear drops and are instead treated with oral antibiotics. This highlights the need for improvement at the primary-secondary care interface.

Summary: Limited objective evidence for the management of acute otitis externa (AOE) prompted the development of a consensus definition, diagnostic criteria, and a core outcome set (COS) through a comprehensive literature review and collaboration with patients. Stakeholders agreed on 31 candidate items, resulting in a COS covering six outcomes to standardize future research in AOE.

Summary: The skin mycobiota of giant pandas varies in different seasons, with higher diversity and abundance in spring, autumn, and summer compared to winter. Several dermatomycosis-associated fungi were found as opportunists in the skin mycobiota of healthy giant pandas.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the patient journey of Italian patients suffering from otitis externa (OE), with a focus on new therapeutic options. The results showed that OE is a common, often relapsing disease with antibiotic resistance becoming a growing problem. New liposomal ozone-based preparations were found to be the most-prescribed treatment.

Summary: Acute otitis externa is a rapid onset inflammatory condition caused by bacterial infection in the external ear canal. It presents with pain, redness, and swelling. Treatment involves using topical antibiotics and analgesics, and the choice of medication depends on factors such as cost and patient adherence. Oral antibiotics are only used in specific circumstances, and prevention involves avoiding ear canal injury and keeping it dry.

Summary: This study compared the physicochemical properties of nine commercially available otic veterinarian products in Australia used to manage canine otitis externa (COE). The results showed that products containing polymers had higher viscosity and bio-adhesion, while spreadability was inversely related to viscosity. Aqueous-based otic products showed better syringebility, while oil-based systems required higher force to expel the products. Variability in droplet size was observed, with Derm Otic, Baytril Otic, and Aurizon Ear Drops showing lower standard deviation, indicating a more consistent dose.

Summary: Otitis externa is a common disease in dogs with various causes, where Enterococcus is a common infection agent. Studying the distribution and antibiotic resistance of Enterococcus in canine otitis externa can help establish treatment strategies and be used as an index for antibiotic resistance in the future.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the earliest sites and spread patterns of bony erosions in skull base osteomyelitis and correlate the radiological findings with clinical/laboratory data. The study found that edema and irregularity or dehiscence of the anterior external auditory canal wall were the most common early CT findings associated with skull base osteomyelitis caused by malignant otitis externa.
