Agricultural land fragmentation and irregularity of parcel shapes are a structural land management problem that prevents the development of modern agriculture. Januszewski (JI) and Simmons (SI) indices are widely used to determine agricultural land parcel fragmentation. Shape index (SHI) and fractal dimension (FD) are also commonly used to evaluate parcel shapes. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the land consolidation project in terms of fragmentation and change of parcel shapes. The purpose of land consolidation projects is to ensure the optimum use of the land and to obtain maximum benefit. The success level of land consolidation projects should be evaluated. Therefore, changes of land parcel fragmentation and parcel shape changes before and after the LC were analyzed using candir District project data. In addition, the effects of LC project on parcel shape and size, the effect on parcel boundaries, and the effect of change of the distance between parcels on fuel saving and changes due to irrigation were investigated. As a result, according to Januszewski and Simmons indices, the ratio of farm enterprise whose index values were less than 0.40 was 1.17% and 3.7% before the LC, respectively, and decreased to 0.6% and 2.3% after the LC. The obtained values showed that the land parcel fragmentation decreased in candir District. In addition, the ratio of farm enterprises whose SHI were greater than 1.60, which implies non-uniform geometric parcel shapes, was 6.5% before the LC, but this ratio decreased to 5.8% after the LC. While the ratio of farm enterprises having parcels, which were non-uniform according to FD values, was 1.6% before the LC, this rate decreased to 0.9% after the LC. These results show that JI and SI indexes can be used in land consolidation projects. In addition, SHI and FD indices are generally parameters that can measure how close the parcel shapes are to the smooth geometric shapes, but they do not give successful results in each parcel. Finally, according to the results of the survey conducted with the farmers, the LC provided a significant economic gain to farm enterprise owners in this region.

The impact of the variability of parameters related to transport costs and parcel shape on land reallocation results

Stanis law Harasimowicz, Stanis law Bacior, Jacek Gniadek, Ela Ertunc, Jaroslaw Janus

Summary: The study demonstrates the simplification of land reallocation optimization using a ratio parameter, with considerations on parcel area, shape, and distance to buildings. The proposed modification improves the adaptability of the model by allowing for variations in the single parameter under different conditions.

A clustering-based approach to land valuation in land consolidation projects

Ela Ertunc, Ahmet Emin Karkinli, Asli Bozdag

Summary: Land valuation is a comprehensive assessment process that aims to assign the agricultural value of parcels based on soil quality and land productivity. A new valuation approach using clustering algorithms and heuristic optimization algorithms has been developed to determine land value more precisely, fairly, and reliably.

Differences in the effectiveness of land consolidation projects in various countries and their causes: Examples of Poland and Turkey

Jaroslaw Janus, Ela Ertunc

Summary: Land fragmentation is a major factor affecting agricultural profitability in many regions globally. The success of land consolidation projects depends on local legal and sociocultural conditions. By comparing projects in Poland and Turkey, the study indicates the need to tailor assessment criteria based on project goals and location-specific factors.

Towards a full automation of land consolidation projects: Fast land partitioning algorithm using the land value map

Jaroslaw Janus, Ela Ertunc

Summary: Land reallocation is a key stage in land consolidation, where individual owners' land is pre-allocated to project area blocks. The effectiveness of interviewing landowners is the most important criteria in this process. This article presents an algorithm for dividing a block based on its value differentiation and shape, according to the direction of the new borders.

Impact of land consolidation on agricultural decarbonization: Estimation of changes in carbon dioxide emissions due to farm transport

Jaroslaw Janus, Ela Ertunc

Summary: Areas used for agriculture are a significant source of carbon emissions, but land consolidation can reduce emissions by reducing fuel consumption. This study analyzed six land consolidation projects in Poland and Turkey, considering different agricultural models and levels of fuel consumption. The results showed diverse carbon emission reduction ranging from 0.3 to 170 kg CO2/ha/year. The proposed approach improves the accuracy of estimating carbon emissions and accumulation related to land consolidation projects, with observed reductions having significant economic and ecological effects lasting for decades.

The Effect of Land Consolidation Projects on Carbon Footprint

Ela Ertunc

Summary: In this study, the transportation-induced carbon footprint values were calculated before and after land consolidation projects in two similar agricultural areas. The study used the IPCC Tier 1 method to calculate the carbon footprint and also determined the effects of changes in road lengths and routes on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The results showed a decrease of 10% and 33% in carbon footprint values after the land consolidation project in the Fatih and Selimiye neighborhoods respectively. The reduction in GHG emissions was measured at 490.21 kg CO2 center dot ha(-1). These findings highlight the potential benefits of land consolidation in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and improving agricultural productivity in rural areas.

Prioritization of land consolidation projects using the multi-criteria Best-Worst Method: a case study from Poland

Ela Ertunc, Jaroslaw Janus, Mevlut Uyan

Summary: To revitalize rural areas and balance the needs of ecology, environment, and agricultural productivity, local government units should prioritize the implementation of land consolidation (LC) projects. This study proposed a new model using the Best-Worst Method (BWM) to determine priority areas for LC projects based on criteria derived from 75 villages in the Malopolska region, Poland. The model allows for transparent identification and prioritization of villages for land consolidation, effective resource management, and equitable allocation of financial assistance.

Summary: The aim of this study is to propose an effective method for comparing the land fragmentation parameters that determine agricultural profitability. By using grid-based structure and relevant data, spatial indicators were obtained to show the diversity of economic costs related to land fragmentation parameters. The results demonstrate a significant variation in farm operating conditions depending on the land fragmentation parameters.

Legal, Procedural and Social Aspects of Land Valuation in Land Consolidation: A Comparative Study for Selected Central and Eastern Europe Countries and Turkey

Ela Ertunc, Zlatica Muchova, Hrvoje Tomic, Jaroslaw Janus

Summary: The article analyzes the legal and practical aspects of land value maps for land consolidation in four countries: Slovakia, Croatia, Poland, and Turkey. The discussion concludes that it is currently not possible to create fully universal methods of automatic earth valuation for land consolidation due to the variety of approaches to land value mapping. Similar areas need to be identified prior to individual parcel valuation. The agronomic value from the farmer's perspective is the key criterion. The development of mass land valuation methods should involve public participation to increase acceptance of the valuation and subsequent effects of land consolidation projects.
