Summary: This study aimed to investigate the molecular basis of Chinese medicine syndrome classification in chronic hepatitis B patients in terms of DNA methylation, transcription, and cytokines. The results suggest that demethylation of CpG loci in the HLA-F gene's 5' UTR region may up-regulate its mRNA expression, and HLA-F expression is associated with IL-12, MIP-1 alpha, and MIP-1 beta levels.

Summary: The study investigated the serological, virological, and histological profiles in chronic HBV patients treated with multiple dose ARC-520. Results showed sustained and profound reductions in viral antigens and HBV RNA, with achievable HBsAg seroclearance. Immune activation was observed in some patients, and HBcAg staining was negative in all biopsied patients.

Summary: This study found strong correlation between serum HBV pgRNA and HBcrAg levels in Chinese chronic hepatitis B patients, with moderate correlation with HBV DNA and HBsAg. Differences in serum HBV pgRNA levels and correlations were observed between HBeAg-positive and HBeAg-negative patients, with HBcrAg showing the most stable correlation with HBV pgRNA.

Summary: This study compared and ranked different traditional Chinese medicine therapies for treating liver fibrosis caused by chronic hepatitis B. The results showed that Fuzheng Huayu therapy and combined with entecavir, as well as Ziyin Shugan therapy and combined with ETV, had preferable effects on improving clinical efficacy.

Summary: The study emphasizes the conflict between biomedical and public health explanations and the lived experience of hepatitis B among people of Chinese ethnicity in Australia. Beliefs about hepatitis B are embedded within cultural understandings of health that can conflict with biomedical explanations of the infection. Acknowledging these perspectives provides for insightful communication between health services and their clients, and the development of nuanced models of care informed by the experience of people with hepatitis B.

Summary: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can lead to the development of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Lifelong treatment with nucleotides/nucleoside antiviral agents is effective but adherence can be challenging. This review discusses recent advances in the development of long-acting formulations and curative strategies for HBV treatment, highlighting promising antivirals and genome editing approaches.

Summary: This study investigated medication adherence and persistence among Chinese and Vietnamese individuals with Hepatitis B virus (HBV) using the information-motivation-behavioral skills model (IMB). The results showed that HBV-related knowledge, motivation, and self-efficacy were positively associated with medication adherence. Living more than 10 years in the U.S. and greater information-knowledge about HBV were associated with higher odds of medication adherence. Moreover, greater HBV-related knowledge/information and greater motivation towards HBV treatment adherence were associated with a higher likelihood of medication persistence.

Summary: A study on HBV-infected individuals found that consuming >= 3 cups of coffee per day was associated with a higher risk of dyslipidemia and a lower risk of hypertension. There was no significant association with diabetes. Further research is needed to determine whether these metabolic benefits translate into reduced mortality risk for patients.

Summary: Functional cure is considered achieved when chronic hepatitis B patients achieve HBsAg seroclearance after treatment. Clearing the virus is challenging due to the difficulty in clearing both cccDNA and integrated dslDNA. High levels of HBsAg in the serum lead to immune system failure, making it unable to produce an effective antiviral response. Only less than 1% of chronic hepatitis B patients are cured annually with antiviral treatment. Coinfection with other viruses such as HIV, HCV, and HDV makes it even more difficult to cure. However, it has been found that patients with coinfection have a higher probability of achieving HBsAg seroclearance, especially those with HBV/HIV coinfection with up to 36% 5-year seroclerance rate. This interesting phenomenon is related to the functional reconstruction of the immune system after antiretroviral therapy (ART).
