Summary: This report presents a case of sepsis in a calf caused by a multidrug resistant Raoultella ornithinolytica, highlighting the need for rapid and appropriate treatment. Whole genome sequencing confirmed the identification of the pathogen and its drug resistant qualities. The calf recovered with empirical parenteral therapy and ancillary treatment. Further investigation is needed to determine if animals and farms could be reservoirs for such resistant strains.

Summary: Raoultella ornithinolytica is a poorly understood opportunistic pathogen with multidrug resistance mechanisms. The isolate WM1 exhibited resistance to multiple antimicrobials and carried two plasmids with multidrug resistance regions. In addition to virulence-related elements, the strain showed genetic diversity, emphasizing the importance of infection control and antimicrobial stewardship.

Summary: Class D beta-lactamases OXA-232 and OXA-48 were found to hydrolyze penicillin, cephalosporins, and carbapenems, limiting therapeutic options for bacteraemia. The study identified Raoultella ornithinolytica carrying OXA 232 and OXA-48 genes, confirming the results of the beta-lactamases assay. This represents the first report of multidrug resistance R. ornithinolytica in Mexico, highlighting the emergence of OXA producer microorganisms as a significant threat.

This case report describes a 25-year-old patient with R. ornithinolytica infection presenting with fever, rash, and lymph node enlargement. Treatment with meropenem and loratadine was successful in managing the infection and associated allergic reaction.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical and molecular features of Raoultella ornithinolytica strains isolated from clinical environments in Ecuador, and to compare their genomes with previously published genomes of Raoultella spp. The results revealed the genome plasticity of R. ornithinolytica and its ability to acquire antibiotic resistance genes, highlighting the importance of genomic surveillance and infectious control for these uncommon species.

Summary: Raoultella ornithinolytica is a versatile bacterium that can be found in various habitats, including soil, water, plants, and the human gastrointestinal tract and throat. It was originally thought to cause opportunistic infections, but it is increasingly being implicated in infections in immunocompetent individuals. This bacterium causes infections in different clinical settings, with an increasing incidence of sepsis among humans. There is also a growing concern over multidrug resistance in isolates of Raoultella ornithinolytica.

Summary: In this study, bioremediation method was used to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Thirteen chromium resistant bacteria were obtained and their minimum inhibitory concentrations and optimum pH condition were determined. BCA13 strain showed the ability to reduce high concentrations of Cr(VI) and could be used in biodegradation studies.

Summary: Species of Raoultella and Klebsiella share many similarities and are practically indistinguishable in clinical microbiology laboratories due to technological limitations. There has been an increase in case reports of human Raoultella infections since the late 2000s, leading some authors to suggest Raoultella spp. as rare and/or emerging pathogens. Further studies are needed to clarify the epidemiology and clinical relevance of human Raoultella infections, as well as the impact of advancements in identification techniques on the reported cases. Raoultella spp. may be more underdiagnosed than considered rare or emerging pathogens.

Summary: The study identified a novel mobile gene cluster, tmexCD2-toprJ2, present in Raoultella ornithinolytica, which confers resistance to multiple antimicrobials and may have originated from a Pseudomonas species. The expression of tmexCD2-toprJ2 in Escherichia coli resulted in increased resistance to tigecycline and decreased susceptibility to other antimicrobials. Genetic context analyses demonstrated that tmexCD2-toprJ2 might have been captured and mobilized by a XerD-like tyrosine recombinase system.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution and resistance mechanisms of carbapenem-resistant Raoultella spp. (CRR) in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in eastern China. The results showed that CRR were mainly found in the water inlet and mud cake stacking area of the WWTP, with a higher detection rate in the water inlet. All CRR isolates were resistant to multiple antibiotics and various carbapenemase genes were identified. Interestingly, R. ornithinolytica isolates from the WWTP were closely related to those from human samples in China. Plasmid analysis revealed the transmission routes and core structures of carbapenemase genes in the environment.

Summary: In this study, metal-resistant Raoultella ornithinolytica was isolated from metal-contaminated samples collected from the Tanjaro River in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq. The bacterium showed high removal rates for various heavy metals and had capabilities to remove metals under different conditions. It can be used as an eco-friendly biological expedient for the remediation and detoxification of metals from contaminated environments.
