Surfactant-enhanced remediation (SER) has been widely applied in decontaminating PAH-polluted soil. Most researches focus on evaluating washing efficiency without considering pollutants' mutual interaction. This study aims to investigate cosolubilization effect between phenanthrene (Phe) and pyrene (Pyr) in nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 (TX100) solution on their codesorption performance from soil. Cosolubilization experiment showed that, when cosolubilized, solubility of Phe and Pyr in TX100 increased by 15.38% and 18.19%, respectively, as quantified by the deviation ratio of molar solubilization ratio in single and binary solute solubilization systems. The synergism may be due to the enlarged micelle volume caused by PAHs solubilized in the shell region of the micelle. The cosolubilization effect was further observed in the soil washing process. The strengthened TX100 solubilization capacity towards Phe and Pyr could increase the two PAHs' codesorption efficiency from soil, accompanied by synergistic extent of 6 15%. However, synergism in codesorption was weaker than that observed in the cosolubilization system, which may be related to surfactant loss to soil and PAH partition into soil organic matter and the sorbed surfactants. The improved remediation performance during codesorption of mixed PAHs implies the significance of combining PAHs' mutual interaction into evaluating SER, which may reduce the surfactant washing concentration and save remediation cost. Unintentional formation of mixed chloro-bromo diphenyl ethers (PBCDEs) dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBCDD/Fs) from pyrolysis of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)

Jiahao Liang, Rui Wang, He Liu, Danping Xie, Xueqin Tao, Jiangmin Zhou, Hua Yin, Zhi Dang, Guining Lu

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive investigation on the formation pathways of chloro-bromo-mixed products from the pyrolysis of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The results demonstrate that PBDEs can unintentionally transform into chloro-bromo diphenyl ethers (PBCDEs) and dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofurans (PBCDD/Fs) during the pyrolysis process. Experimental phenomena and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the mechanism of chlorine atom substitution at bromine sites, and lower bromination levels of PBDEs favor the generation of chloro-bromo-mixed products.

Application of bovine bone meal and oyster shell meal to heavy metals polluted soil: Vegetable safety and bacterial community

Xiongkai Zheng, Bowen Zhang, Weibin Lai, Mengting Wang, Xueqin Tao, Mengyao Zou, Jiangmin Zhou, Guining Lu

Summary: Efficient and environmentally friendly soil amendments are necessary to reduce the risk of metal contaminants to the soil ecosystem. Bovine bone meal (BM) and oyster shell meal (OS) can reduce the mobility and bioavailability of metals by increasing soil pH. The geochemical properties of the soil have a greater impact on metal migration than enzyme activity. BM and OS can suppress the uptake of Cd and Pb by water spinach, keeping them below international safety standards. The protein and sugar content, as well as peroxidase activity, show a negative correlation with metal content in water spinach, while superoxide dismutase activity, ascorbate peroxidase activity, and malondialdehyde content exhibit a positive correlation. BM and OS have minimal disturbance on bacterial composition during heavy metal remediation. Overall, BM and OS are eco-friendly amendments that can improve soil nutrients, stabilize heavy metals, and regulate bacterial communities.

Summary: This study developed an economical and environmental-friendly adsorbent using shrimp shell for the efficient removal of Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) in water environments. The shrimp shell biochar exhibited excellent adsorption performance due to its hierarchical porous structure. The binding mechanisms between TCEP and specific biochar structures were identified as hydrogen bond, van der Waals interactions, Cl-H interactions, and pi-H interactions.
