Summary: This study presents two zinc finger peptides, ZFQD(Ln) and ZFQE(Ln) (Ln = Tb or Gd) with Ln(3+) chelate and phosphoserine binding to the Ln(3+) ion. The peptides differ by the amino acid anchorage of the chelate. Both peptides can bind Zn2+ and fold into a specific structure. The luminescence change upon Zn2+ binding is due to the change in hydration number of the Ln(3+) ion and the folding of the peptide.

Summary: The study successfully prepared luminescent terbium (Tb3+)-loaded supramolecular gels through the self-assembly of Fmoc-diphenylalanine (FmocPhePhe) at room temperature, with hydroxybenzoic acid (2-HA) exhibiting the most effective sensitization to Tb3+ in the gels. The as-prepared gels can be used for salicylic acid sensing with 6.8 mu M of the detection limit, making it a potential method for detecting salicylates in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Summary: In pursuit of new mechanically responsive luminescent materials, the study aims to differentiate triboluminescence (TL) from photoluminescence (PL). A beta-diketonate ligand with tert-butyl groups is used to quench Eu-III-centered PL and provide efficient photosensitization of Tb-III ions. Nanomechanical tests reveal the ductility of the crystals, making them ideal for accumulating deformation energy before breakage. Additionally, the study investigates the TL/PL color difference and mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) in a Tb-III/Eu-III heterodinuclear complex.

Summary: In this study, Yb(iii) complexes based on ligands with a tacn macrocyclic core were synthesized, and a carbostyril chromophore was used as a light-harvesting antenna. The ligands provided an octadentate binding environment and the electronic properties of the complexes were modulated by the substitution at the 4 position of the picolinates. The complexes exhibited strong NIR luminescence, indicating the influence of the ligand structure on the luminescence properties of NIR emissive lanthanide(iii) ions.

Summary: A series of luminescent complexes were synthesized and studied for their potential as cell imaging and photocytotoxic agents, showing promising results in cellular uptake and cytotoxicity studies, particularly in cancer cells. The complexes exhibited significant binding affinity to DNA and serum proteins, as well as efficient energy transfer for luminescent cellular imaging probes. The modular design strategy offers further potential for developing light-responsive luminescent Ln (III) bioprobes for theranostic applications.

Summary: Rare earth elements are crucial in various practical applications, but their availability is being hindered by several challenges. Therefore, the recycling of lanthanides from electronic and other waste is gaining traction, making the high sensitivity and selectivity detection of lanthanides a critical research area. We have now introduced a paper-based photoluminescent sensor capable of rapidly detecting terbium and europium with a low detection limit (in nanomolar range), which has the potential to facilitate recycling processes.

Summary: CoraFluors, a new class of macrocyclic terbium complexes, exhibit desirable physicochemical properties for biological studies, enabling quantitative characterization of protein interactions and isoform-selective targeting in live cells. Their development addresses the limitations of previous luminescent lanthanide complexes and poor cellular permeability, expanding the applications of time-resolved FRET assays in biomedical research.

Summary: The combination of pi-conjugated 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) chromophore and 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-dicarboxylate (H(2)bpdc) has been used to create luminescent lanthanide coordination polymers for the fast and effective detection of hazardous ions in water. These polymers exhibit fast response and high efficiency in detecting various hazardous ions, making them a new type of multi-responsive sensor.

Summary: This study presents a simple, sensitive, and validated method for determining the content of chlorogenic acid in green and roasted coffee, without the need for chromatographic separation. The method utilizes luminescence intensity quenching to measure the concentration of chlorogenic acid. The results showed that the method is effective and can be applied for quality control of chlorogenic acid in coffee.

Summary: In this study, a novel fluorescence probe was designed to detect the adulteration of curcumin by harmful artificial dye metanil yellow. The probe was synthesized from the conversion of Tannic acid-Eu3+ complex to Eu-carbon dots. The formed Eu-carbon dots exhibited unique fluorescence excitation and emission features, which can be successfully quenched by metanil yellow dye. The proposed method has a low detection limit and good recovery values.

Summary: Gadolinium-yttrium-aluminum-gallium garnets (GYAGG) doped and codoped with Eu, Tb, and Ce were manufactured as ceramics for high-brightness white light sources based on cathodoluminescence (CL). Tb-doped ceramics showed more than twice the CL light yield (LY) compared to conventional YAG:Ce phosphor, whereas codoping with Eu reduced the LY to a similar level as YAG:Ce. The LY could be substantially improved by using a mix of Tb- and Eu-doped GYGAG powders. The high LY can be explained by the contribution of the Gd sublattice in excitation transfer to activator ions.

The best fluorescence performance was achieved at a CA: Eu3+ ratio of 3:1 with a reaction time of 65 min. The light conversion film showed high transparency, tensile strength, and flexibility, converting harmful UV light to beneficial red light for photosynthesis in plants.
