The global challenges caused by socio-economic inequalities, climate change and environmental damage caused to ecosystems, require changes in human behavior at all organizational levels, including companies, governments, communities, and individuals. In this context, it is important to analyse how social and creative companies that work in the fashion and industrial design recycling sector can address sustainable social change. In this paper, we propose an analysis in the countries of the global South. To learn how grassroots innovations can contribute to the development of sustainable strategies, we perform the framework of Technical transitions. We analyze the three main areas of activity that constitute an effective niche construction: social networks, expectations and visions, and learning. A qualitative methodology is used, a video case study with six grassroots organizations in South Africa, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Brazil. The results reflect the important role played by these grassroots innovations, contributing to the development of social and creative recycling companies that address socio-economic and environmental problems.

A fuzzy-DEA water sustainability index: an application in European Union water risk hotspots

Monica de Castro Pardo, Jose Maria Martin Martin, Jose Manuel Guaita Martinez, Domingo Enrique Ribeiro Soriano

Summary: The current global freshwater crisis poses a serious threat to the availability of water as a resource for humanity. The scarcity of drinking water and the reliance of the food industry on water-intensive supply chains necessitate immediate strategies to analyze and ensure the water sustainability of countries. This study introduces a fuzzy-data envelopment analysis composite index that evaluates water sustainability through a benchmarking approach, considering both capacity and resilience, and accounting for uncertainty stemming from time series variations. The index, based on ten European Union countries' water risk hotspots, incorporates five indicators of capacity and five indicators of resilience. The findings highlight variations in capacity due to substantial water resource exploitation in Greece, Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal. In terms of capacity, Bulgaria and Estonia perform well in pessimistic and indifferent scenarios, whereas France and Bulgaria rank high in an optimistic scenario. Belgium and Portugal demonstrate superior resilience. However, when considering both capacity and resilience together, Belgium emerges as the most sustainable country, while countries like Bulgaria and Estonia experience a decline in their rankings. Without addressing issues of governance and water productivity, Bulgaria's water resources could face sustainability challenges in the context of economic development.

Analyzing the real size of the tourism industry on the basis of an assessment of water consumption patterns

Daniel M. Gonzalez-Perez, Jose Maria Martin Martin, Jose Manuel Guaita Martinez, Andres Morales Pachon

Summary: Studies have shown that official hotel occupancy statistics underestimate the volume of tourists arriving in a territory since tourists staying in non-regulated establishments are not registered. The data from online platforms allow a more approximate estimate, however, they do not reflect the real volume of tourists arriving at a destination either. Therefore, it is difficult to know the real dimension of the tourism industry in a tourist destination.

Xuemei Xie, Yonghui Wu, Jose Manuel Guaita Martinez

Summary: In order to survive in highly competitive business environments, firms in high-tech industries are increasingly relying on research and development (R&D) collaboration to tap into external resources. However, our study shows that the benefits of R&D collaboration on new product innovation decrease while the costs increase. We also find that absorptive capacity and political ties moderate this relationship, with firms with higher absorptive capacities and stronger political ties experiencing higher innovation performance.
