Parasite-host systems are pervasive in nature but are extremely difficult to convincingly identify in the fossil record. Here we report quantitative evidence of parasitism in the form of a unique, enduring life association between tube-dwelling organisms encrusted to densely clustered shells of a monospecific organophosphatic brachiopod assemblage from the lower Cambrian (Stage 4) of South China. Brachiopods with encrusting tubes have decreased biomass (indicating reduced fitness) compared to individuals without tubes. The encrusting tubes orient tightly in vectors matching the laminar feeding currents of the host, suggesting kleptoparasitism. With no convincing parasite-host interactions known from the Ediacaran, this widespread sessile association reveals intimate parasite-host animal systems arose in early Cambrian benthic communities and their emergence may have played a key role in driving the evolutionary and ecological innovations associated with the Cambrian radiation. Parasitic interactions are difficult to document in the fossil record. Here, Zhang et al. analyze a large population of a Cambrian brachiopod and show it was frequently encrusted by tubes aligned to its feeding currents and that encrustation was associated with reduced biomass, suggesting a fitness cost.

Controllable assembly of high sticky and flexibility surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate for on-site target pesticide residues detection

Feng Bai, Jinchen Dong, Tangchun Wang, Jianbo Qu, Zhiliang Zhang

Summary: Pesticide residues in fruit and vegetable pose a significant threat to human health. A new method utilizing WPU@AgNPs sticky tapes was developed for rapid extraction and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) assay of thiabendazole residues on fruit surfaces. The WPU@AgNPs tapes, constructed by coating silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on waterborne polyurethane (WPU) films, demonstrated excellent sensitivity using 4-Mercaptopyridine (4-Mpy) as the probe molecule. The tapes allowed for easy detection of thiabendazole residues on pear, apple, and banana surfaces, with a detection limit of 1.44, 1.12, and 1.63 ng/cm2, respectively. This strategy could be a common method for rapid, on-site, and ultra-sensitive assay of thiabendazole residues in both chemical and biological fields.

Jimin Sun, Jianguo Li, Weiguo Liu, Brian F. Windley, Alex Farnsworth, Chunsheng Jin, Zhiliang Zhang, Wenjiao Xiao

Summary: Through the chronology study of lacustrine deposits of the Upper Dingqing Formation in the Lunpola Basin, Central Tibet, it has been determined that the geological period is middle Miocene (15-12 Ma). Stable isotope and palynological records indicate a climatic transition around 13.8 Ma, characterized by cooler and drier climate. New palynological elevation reconstructions suggest a maximum paleo-elevation of 3100-3600 m (average 3350 m) for the Lunpola Basin, consistent with floating-leaf plants data. This study provides new insights into paleoenvironmental reconstructions and paleo-elevation estimates of the Lunpola Basin, Central Tibet.

The dual role of hydrogen in grain boundary mobility

Yu Ding, Kai Zhao, Meichao Lin, Haiyang Yu, Senbo Xiao, Jianying He, Zhiliang Zhang

Summary: The effect of solute hydrogen on shear-coupled grain boundary migration was studied and the dual role of hydrogen on grain boundary mobility was revealed. At low temperature and high loading rate, where hydrogen diffusion is slower than grain boundary motion, the grain boundary breaks away from the hydrogen atmosphere and transforms into a new stable phase with enhanced mobility. In the reverse regime, hydrogen atoms move along with the grain boundary, exerting a drag force and decreasing its mobility. These findings provide a rationale for the coexistence of hydrogen hardening and softening observed experimentally in polycrystalline materials.

Fibrous or Prismatic? A Comparison of the Lamello-Fibrillar Nacre in Early Cambrian and Modern Lophotrochozoans

Luoyang Li, Marissa J. Betts, Hao Yun, Bing Pan, Timothy P. Topper, Guoxiang Li, Xingliang Zhang, Christian B. Skovsted

Summary: This study reveals that the skeletons of early Cambrian mollusks and hyoliths are composed of fibrous microstructures made of calcite, which had not been discovered before. Additionally, it shows that the shells of these early animals were mainly composed of aragonite. This has important implications for understanding the significance of early biomineralization and its relationship with seawater chemistry.

Microscale Petrographic, Trace Element, and Isotopic Constraints on Glauconite Diagenesis in Altered Sedimentary Sequences: Implications for Glauconite Geochronology

M. Rafiei, S. C. Lohr, O. Alard, A. Baldermann, J. Farkas, G. A. Brock

Summary: Glauconite, a prevalent authigenic clay mineral found in marine sedimentary successions, has a long history of dating but fell into disfavor due to difficulties in obtaining pure glauconite separates. Recent advancements in sedimentary petrography and reaction cell mass spectrometry offer the potential for rapid in situ Rb-Sr dating of glauconite, but caution is needed due to burial alteration. This study combines mineral mapping, geochemical characterization, and in situ Rb-Sr dating to address the impact of postdepositional alteration on glauconite and proposes a screening approach for identifying well-preserved glauconite grains.

The effect of plastic deformation on hydrogen diffusion in nickel Alloy 625

Xu Lu, Andres Diaz, Jun Ma, Dong Wang, Jianying He, Zhiliang Zhang, Roy Johnsen

Summary: Recently, hydrogen-assisted failures have been observed on nickel alloys used in the subsea oil and gas industries. This study investigates the hydrogen diffusion behavior in a nickel Alloy 625 under various pre-strain levels. The results show that while an increase in strain levels reduces hydrogen diffusivity, there is an acceleration in hydrogen diffusion when the strain exceeds a certain level, likely due to hydrogen-enhanced strain-induced vacancy formation at grain boundaries and reduced hydrogen trapping by fractured carbides.

Jiangzhao Ai, Yongping Li, Xianguo Zhang, Chao Xiao, Guangming Chen, Xiaoliang Zheng, Zhiliang Zhang

Summary: In this article, high spatiotemporal resolution data obtained by China's APOD satellite are used to study the hemispheric asymmetry of thermospheric density. The results show a strong hemispheric asymmetry of thermospheric atmospheric density response during the magnetic storm, with the atmospheric density in the southern polar region (SPR) on the duskside being higher than that in the northern polar region (NPR). The hemispheric density response asymmetry is related to local time (LT).

First Report of Small Skeletal Fossils from the Upper Guojiaba Formation (Series 2, Cambrian), Southern Shaanxi, South China

Mei Luo, Fan Liu, Yue Liang, Luke C. Strotz, Jiayue Wang, Yazhou Hu, Baopeng Song, Lars E. Holmer, Zhifei Zhang

Summary: Small skeletal fossils from the early Cambrian Guojiaba Formation in southern Shaanxi, China were reported for the first time. The fossils include a wide variety of skeletal clades, such as brachiopods, sphenothallids, archaeocyaths, bradoriids, sponge spicules, echinoderm plates, and trilobite spines. The archaeocyaths found in the Guojiaba Formation are older than those previously described from the Xiannvdong Formation. The fossil assemblages from the Guojiaba Formation resemble those from the upper Yu'anshan Formation (Chengjiang Fauna) in eastern Yunnan Province, supporting the correlation of the Guojiaba Formation with the Chiungchussuan Stage (Stage 3 of Cambrian Series 2).

Dabing Yu, Qingwu Li, Xiaolin Wang, Zhiliang Zhang, Yixi Qian, Chang Xu

Summary: In this paper, a novel dual-stream Transformer (DSTrans) is proposed for hyperspectral image (HSI) restoration, addressing the challenges of limited training samples and the difficulty in capturing long-range dependencies. The DSTrans consists of dual-stream attention and dual-stream feed-forward network, effectively capturing spectral dependencies and global spatial interactions. Additionally, a multi-tasking network is utilized to jointly train the RGB image task and HSI task. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in HSI restoration tasks.

Enhancing intermolecular packing and light harvesting through asymmetric non-fullerene acceptors for achieving 18.7% efficiency ternary organic solar cells

Zhiliang Zhang, Jingnan Wu, Ji Lin, Rui Zhang, Junfang Lv, Linfeng Yu, Xia Guo, Maojie Zhang

Summary: In recent years, the ternary strategy has been proven effective in improving the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). By adding an asymmetric medium-band gap non-fullerene acceptor (AFIC) as a third component into the PM6:BTP-eC9 binary blend, a highly efficient ternary OSC is achieved. The AFIC exhibits well-complementary absorption spectrum with the host blend, enhancing light harvesting and improving charge transport in the ternary devices. As a result, the ternary OSC demonstrates a significantly improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.7% compared to the binary OSC's PCE of 17.5%, attributed to the synergistic enhancement of Voc, Jsc, and FF.

Population genomics unravels the Holocene history of bread wheat and its relatives

Xuebo Zhao, Yafei Guo, Lipeng Kang, Changbin Yin, Aoyue Bi, Daxing Xu, Zhiliang Zhang, Jijin Zhang, Xiaohan Yang, Jun Xu, Song Xu, Xinyue Song, Ming Zhang, Yiwen Li, Philip Kear, Jing Wang, Zhiyong Liu, Xiangdong Fu, Fei Lu

Summary: Through analyzing the whole-genome sequences of 795 wheat accessions, it was found that bread wheat originated from the southwest coast of the Caspian Sea and underwent a slow speciation process. It gradually spread across Eurasia in the past few thousand years and formed diversified adaptive landscapes in novel environments. In contrast, the cultivated relatives of bread wheat experienced a population decline due to human food choice shift, and many wheat relatives are predicted to continue shrinking in the future due to climate change. These findings will guide future efforts in protecting and utilizing wheat biodiversity to enhance global wheat production.
