Summary: This study explored the longitudinal relationship between depression and cognition in geriatric stroke patients, identifying different trajectories of depression and their impact on post-stroke cognitive abilities. Factors such as pre-stroke cognition, demographics, and depression trajectories were found to be predictive of cognitive outcomes after stroke, emphasizing the need to consider the interplay between depression and cognition in this population.

Summary: This study compared the predictive value of pre-stroke Frailty Index (FI) and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) for post-stroke neurocognitive disorder (NCD). The results showed that FI was a stronger predictor of post-stroke NCD than mRS and could be included in the prediction models for cognitive prognosis post-stroke.

Summary: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs) are common complications in elderly patients, characterized by cognitive decline after anesthesia and surgery. Neuroinflammation, particularly in the elderly, has been identified as a major cause, with the activation of glial cells playing a significant role in the inflammatory responses in the central nervous system (CNS). Clinical and preclinical studies have provided evidence from various levels to understand PNDs and their potential therapeutic targets, but further research is needed to investigate the signaling pathways and their relationship with future neurocognitive dysfunction.

Summary: Cognitive screening tools alone are ineffective in distinguishing cognitive decline secondary to depression, but the GDS-4 shows high accuracy in this regard. Incorporating the GDS-4 into the screening process in primary care could facilitate early identification and treatment of depression in younger individuals, avoiding unnecessary referrals to memory services.

Summary: The study identified that WMH pathology, MTA pathology, and left hemispheric stroke were associated with the development of any NCD in the early phase after stroke. Additionally, stroke lesion volume and WMH pathology were found to be significantly associated with the development of major NCD 3 months post-stroke, suggesting their potential as predictive imaging markers for early post-stroke NCD.

Summary: Romania has one of the highest incidences and mortality rates of stroke in Europe, which is associated with low public spending on healthcare. However, significant improvements have been made in acute stroke care in the last 5 years, including an increase in the national thrombolysis rate. Nevertheless, Romania still faces challenges such as a lack of specialists and rehabilitation centers.

Summary: This study aims to follow the effects of diet therapy in patients with cachexia/sarcopenia using parameters measured by bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIA). The results show that high body-fat mass, significant muscle mass loss, and malnutrition are associated with cachexia. Furthermore, obesity is linked to sarcopenic obesity, and decreased fat mass increases the risk of muscle mass loss, leading to cachexia with age.

Summary: Seeds from grapes are rich in biologically active compounds and can be used as a primary platform for natural extracts, innovative foods, medicines, and cosmetics. This paper focuses on the phytochemical composition, manufacturing processes, and health benefits of various grape seed oils extracted using different methods. However, the results vary across studies due to different factors and measurement units, making the communication of results challenging. The main topics covered are grape seed oil's lipophilic fatty acids, tocopherols, and phytosterols. In addition, affordable, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly extraction methods should be developed to improve the oil's quality and biological activity for the management of various diseases.

Summary: This study determined the bioaccessibility and prebiotic potential of the polyphenols in freeze-dried elderberry powder, as well as its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The results showed that the most significant phenolic compounds in elderberry are anthocyanins, which have high antioxidant activity. The extract exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, with the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration observed for Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The polyphenols also positively influenced the cell growth of five probiotic strains, with the greatest effect observed at 1.5% concentration on L. casei.

Analysis of employee satisfaction questionnaires distributed from 2019 to 2021 showed a relatively constant percentage of motivated employees at around 75%. Different staff categories exhibited variations in work interestedness. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant effect on motivation and work interestedness for certain staff groups, while others showed insignificant changes.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the status of elderly patients with oral pathology and compare two groups of elderly patients based on their regularity of dental checkups. The study analyzed various parameters including the epidemiological profile, chronic diseases, dental hygiene, accessibility and attendance of dental health services, quality of life, and dental clinical diagnosis. Only 25% of the 120 elderly patients included in the study presented regularly for dental checkups. Age, education, and income were found to be factors influencing regular dental visits. Patients with regular checkups had lower drug consumption for dental pain compared to those with irregular checkups. Patients who regularly visited the dentist showed better dental hygiene. A concerning finding was that 10% of patients who did not visit the dentist regularly did not use a toothbrush and toothpaste, and approximately 40% were unaware of the toothpaste they used. Lack of money was cited as the main reason for attending the dentist only when necessary. Difficult access was mentioned by 10% of patients who regularly visited the dentist and came from rural areas. The reasons for visiting the dentist differed between the two groups, with regular checkup patients requesting caries treatment, prosthetic work, or presenting with dental bleeding, while irregular checkup patients primarily requested emergency services. Elderly patients who regularly attended periodic dental checkups had better self-reported and dentist-confirmed oral health status, with 60% of them suffering from periodontal disease and 50% having class I and II edentation.
