A new compound, selaginellin S (1), was isolated from the whole plants of Selaginella moellendorffii Hieron. Its structure was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis and ECD calculations. Selaginellin S markedly suppressed the production of HbsAg and HBeAg with IC50 values of 0.026 and 0.032 mu g/mL. The transcript of viral mRNA was significantly suppressed by selaginellin S in HepG2.2.15 cells.
